  1. I've had to battle of small level of GBA. I've read a lot and have cleaned and cleaned my tank and plants. I ended up removing a bunch of my plants leaves and dipping Hardscape in hydrogen peroxide then rinsing and putting it back in the tank. I even got desperate enough to do dips of the plants for a few seconds in the peroxide. Even with small amounts it has been a struggle. I've tried Excel but it does kill some plants. I would take out those decorations and soak those things and scrub them good! that's a lot of black beard algae that you can easily get rid of and then use the other options for the tank. Just my experience. I'm hoping that I've got it under control and maybe it disappeared but who knows! I think my culprit was a couple pieces of wood that had large plants attached with lots of roots... I left them alone too long and it got yucky
  2. My PO is so low that it is not on the test chart! I add flourish PO a couple times a week and I'm still struggling with low P.O. I wonder how much is too much?
  3. Interesting thread! I purchased new lights a few months ago and have struggled with algae ever since. I am still working on the balance of lighting versus nutrients. When i test for the phosphate, it is so low it looks yellow. What do you add to raise the PO I have been adding the liquid nutrient
  4. Do you "say good-bye to you GBR? I love these little fish I wrote to you in a different post about problems that I'm having keeping them. Would appreciate your input
  5. Do you keep German Blue Rams? I love those little fish! I have been so sad because I tried even buying some from Aquabid, and they still are dropping one by one. Do you have any suggestions on keeping them healthy? I am literally about ready to give up! I posted last week the issue I am experiencing with them. My water's perfect, pH of 6.8, 5ppm nitrates, 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia, temperature around 81 to 82. Weekly water change at minimum. Low KH & G H 30 or less.
  6. Comment on the Acaras... they get little bumps on the head or scrapes and they heal up really fast. It's not the same as hole in the head. I've had them for a few years. Actual HITH is not easy to deal with.
  7. I just posted they similar experience in the disease section. I've had Rams where I had to bring my water down from a high pH with a RO water and mixed with tap water. They lasted about a little over a year...the ones that made it at least. Now I'm in different water with low pH of 6.8 soft water GH KH is low. I add crushed Coral to stabilize. My experience is the same as the original poster. Fish are swimming around seemed fine and then one morning they are inactive hanging towards the top of the tank Within a day they're gone. It's happened over and over and I've spent a lot of money and I'm really sad about letting fish die so I'm about ready to give up. I did the quarantine with the meds this time for two weeks. It has been over a month and now they're slowly passing. I read one study that believes that could be parasitic that takes an antibiotic that you have to mix it with food. I am trying that but I think that the one that is sick right now is not eating. I have also read that it could be possible from Farm breeding and some of the chemicals that they do use.
  8. They are in a 40 gallon breeder that is only about three months old. Planted with 10 neons, one Albino bristle nose not full grown and had six rams plus one snail. I was trying to make a tank that was mostly for the Rams. I do have some wigglers happening at the moment. They will be the first. I also have a fish that is doing the same as described in my tank at the moment and have lost two in the last few days. When I do the GH and KH test It only takes two drops. For both. I do water changes typically at least once a week My goal was to raise healthy Rams so other people could enjoy them without whatever’s happening at the farms. But I’m not feeling very comfortable with raising this particular fish at the moment. I’m hoping some of the wigglers make it and maybe we can start with the healthy group
  9. I love the German blue Rams! My Success with keeping them for any length of time has not been good. The best I've done is a little over a year. I tried again recently and am having the exact same issue. They are in a 40 gallon breeder, 81 degrees, planted tank, PH 6.8 to 7, zero ammonia, zero nitrite, low nitrate maybe 5ppm They each just one morning are found at the top of the tank. Still alive and no visible signs of illness but just not swimming around and pass shortly. I used the quarantine Trio when they arrived. I also tried the same meds when the issue started showing up this time. Nothing seems to be helping. Ready to give up on keeping this fish. I tried getting them off of Aquabid this time from a supposed home breeder... I'm pretty sure they were actually from a farm. I think they lied. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
  10. I tried a method with a veggie in the bottom. I could not tell whether it worked or not but it sure did get stinky. I am not sure if the small amount of Aquarium plant pieces I put at the top had enough to start it. I'm going to try this today! How long does it take to see the infusoria? Thanks!
  11. At least your fish are safe and so are your floors!!
  12. Thanks for your feedback! I have a piece waiting on my son to come by and cut it for me. I think I will put some trim on the raw edges to make it look better. Take care and God bless!
  13. What type of mat you plan to put under the aquarium?
  14. Thanks for the input! Even the company that manufactured the tank did not make suggestions on specific requirements for the stands. I find that negligent! 🙂 I am starting to switch some of my tanks to acrylic because I am concerned about leaks. For the moment I purchased a condo and it’s making me very nervous! I think I’m turning into a crazy fish tank woman! 🙂
  15. I appreciate the frank comments in this thread! It was fun to read because of the honesty and the good tips! Aquarium co-op puts out great plants. I seem to have trouble with the easier plants and found that my fish like to eat certain ones. It is a process.
  16. That is what I was wondering, but the big box pet store told me otherwise. I think I remember seeing a video somewhere about protecting the base of an acrylic aquarium but I can’t find it thank you
  17. Just purchased a new acrylic Aquarium that is only 40 gallon. I do not know what type of stand is appropriate. I’ve checked with local pet stores and they said I could use one from Petco that is a metal frame. Wondering if anyone has knowledge of what I should be looking to purchase. Thanks in advance
  18. Thank you! It seems to have run its course finally! What a mess! Thank you all for your suggestions!
  19. Thank you for the suggestions! I put a snail on top of it while I still had it in the tank and the snail died. I’m not sure if it was related. I have a new snail now and I’m going to try to Pour the boiling water over the areas without the Anubis. There are only two plants so far on the wood. I also tried applying hydrogen peroxide and let it soak on it for just a little bit and then put it back in the water. Not the aquarium water but the tub. Still have biofilm so I will try the boiling water and then hope the snails will catch the rest.Thank you again for your suggestions!
  20. I purchased a pretty large piece of spiderwood. Diameter of thickest part is maybe 3" x 3 ' long. I soaked it for a couple weeks and then try to put it in my tank with some rock sitting on it. That fluffy sappy stuff keeps coming out. I finally took it out put it in my tub and have been soaking it for over a month and it still has that bacterial fluffy stuff on it. I've washed it off I've scrubbed it down a couple times. Any suggestions it is too big to put in a heated water pot.
  21. Rosy Barbs are awesome to clear out hair or thread algae! I have a new tank which is 40 gallon and cycled it with media from my larger tank. My substrate is Fluval since it is a planted tank and and has fish. I purchased a new Fluval 3.0 from aquarium Co-op and have overdone the light versus the nutrients. Thanks to Cory, I was able to figure out that I was doing the wrong thing by stopping adding nutrients. Which then furthered my imbalance. So I've been working on correcting that have tried several things to try to get rid of the algae. Spent a lot of time. Even tried Easy Carbon just one dose and then was concerned about my new fish so stopped. Then I saw Cory's video with Rosy Barb's eating hair algae. I have an extra 10 gallon tank so I set it up for colder water fish and purchased a few Rosy Barb's. I've been little at a time taking my plants from my 40 gallon and sticking them down inside the 10 gallon and within a couple hours they have the plant clean! I'm almost completed in resetting my tank. They are awesome fish. They are really cute and active. Thanks Cory!
  22. Thank you for sharing your experience! I am coming to the same conclusion! Some of what I saw in the water may have been some parasites and some may have been a reaction to the food or other material in the cycled sponges etc. my water is looking better today and the fish swimming around happy so I think we are good! God bless thank you so much again
  23. Thank you very much. The tank was perfectly clean until that happened yesterday. Your suggestions are appreciated. I felt a lot better after rechecking the water. I don’t know why I didn’t think of doing that again.
