  1. You are going to want it lightly stocked. You could try apistogramma borellii. Your system seems doable, but I would think your goal would be to care for the fish the best possible. It seems by “hardy” you mean can take a beating, which I don’t think should be our goal from the start. Yoo ok I can care for any fish that can go down to 70 degrees in this setup as long as you keep an eye on your water parameters.
  2. A lot of fish are bred in Florida now a days, like a lot of the us suppliers. They breed all of it in rock hard water. So far I have bred polar blue parrot cichlids, Endlers, multis, and kribensis, and have had spawns from German blue rams and Turkana Jewel cichlids that have been eaten by their parents. My water is pretty hard as well.
  3. Your water parameters are very similar to mine
  4. I appreciate that. That was a really helpful response. I have a test kit. I have 0-20 nitrite, 0 ammonia, Gh off the charts, KH 40-80, 0 chlorine. PH 6.8?
  5. Do you experience with this type of Betta? I understand getting closer to what they like it he would may help. My water parameters are fine. I don’t have an RO unit and would prefer not to mess with water other than my tap water if I can avoid it. I was thinking I would push the temp closer to 80 and add some tannins to see if that helped. I was just wondering if anyone has had success spawning these and what they did?
  6. Well I live in Chicago so it’s hard water. pH around neutral. No tannins. Temp 76-78. Sponge filter in a 10 gallon.
  7. I have a reverse trio of these. I have heard that they breed pretty regularly, but mine don’t seem interested. I have had them for a while and they are definitely adults. Anyone with have experience here?
  8. You could also look in to goodieds. Not as popular as white clouds or goldfish, but they love cold water. Or rainbow darters.
  9. I have the finnex planted plus clip on light and the color from it is very attractive. It also has a gooseneck.
  10. I would love to see that
  11. I think I want to get a culture of these started. Does anyone have these? And would you be willing to share?
  12. They will grow roots at the nodes. Most stem plants you can just cut and stick in the substrate
  13. You could try apistos or some other dwarf cichlid. A pair of wild bettas. Medaka rice fish.
  14. I think that most fish will adapt to a wide variety of conditions. You just need something with a little attitude. Kribs would do it.
  15. That’s what I thought. I have some expel-p so I will treat the tank, thanks, derek
  16. Hey, I noticed a couple of my female Endlers are looking like their belly’s are a little flat or sunkin. This is only present in a holding tank and I have these fish in probably 5 different tanks. Is this a sign of some disease or a genetic defect that I need to cull out? She just doesn’t look right. I know at least one other female in the tank looks the same. My parameters are fine. I change water every week. I feed BBS at least once per day. There were a huge number of Endlers in this 10 Gallon up until recently when I have been able to get the numbers lower. ammonia - 0 nitrate - 40 nitrite - 0 KH - 40 pH 6.8 GH - Hard AF appreciate your thoughts and experience
  17. Or you can just pick fish you like. Cleaner fish don’t really clean anything. BN Plecos can help with algae control but they have a huge bio load. Otos similarly will eat algae. Snails eat most organic material but poop a lot. SAEs seem to be excellent algae eaters but don’t do anything about milk. Just get the fish you like. The idea of fish cleaning things is a little absurd. Many inverts fo a good job of keeping things spiffy looking.
  18. Is first bites the same as the coop fry food?
  19. Hey all, I just hatched my first small batch of medaka rice fish. I am hatching bbs, but it will be a little bit before they can eat that. I also have the aquarium coop fry food. Will this work for them or do I need something different. I really can’t afford to mess up, I don’t have any more.
  20. I just got the ziss bbs hatchery. I saw on the coops video that Cory doesn’t strain his bbs, he just puts the salt ammonia shrimp water straight in the tank. I think Dean strains his. What do you all do?
  21. I agree. It’s great listening to people who love fish talk about fish! I am listening through them sequentially, but also listening to every new one that come out.
  22. Same thing happened to mine. Didn’t come back
  23. Picked up 6 of these today. Might be my new favorite fish. Beautiful!
  24. I have some berries amano females. I actually really like this shrimp and am going to attempt to make more. I have set up a 10 gallon with salt water filled half way and one of my berried females I na jar. When the larva hatch, I will move them to the salt water side. As they start to convert, I will fill the tank the rest of the day and then do frequent water changes over the next few days to get the salt out. Right now just waiting.
  25. If it’s a pair, livebearers will drop their fry on the ground. Check for babies.
