  1. They have a large rock and an enormous Amazon sword. What is the tube?
  2. Hey, I have had these angels for 6-7 months now. They were clearly adults when I go them. I originally purchased 6, all around this size. I was hoping they would pair off. The 2 below have always been around each other. It was 4 angels on one side of the tank and these 2 on the other. I just got rid of 3 of the angels. Now it is these 2 on one side of the tank, and the one angel that is left on the other. I have to assume these 2 are a pair. The issue is, I haven’t seen them spawn once. They haven’t even sniffed at spawning behavior. I really want to breed them because I love this color patter and I think they are awesome. It was my understanding that angels are easy to spawn. Is there something I am not catching here? Sorry, forgot to add the pic
  3. Mollies can live with just about anything. They are tough. As long as you have enough of them there shouldn’t be an issue. No fry will survive. I have black mollies with some medium sized cichlids and they do just fine.
  4. I think it is unethical to abuse any animal. That being said, do I think fish keeping, and even keeping wild fish is unethical? Not if it is done correctly. There are many wild Caught fish that are caught in a sustainable way and their populations are nowhere close to in danger. Most of these species that are in danger are not because of the aquarium trade but rather because of deforestation and infrastructure. Project piaba works particularly with cardinal tetras. They work with fisher people to help them build a way of life around fishing for aquarium fishes and make a living sustainably harvesting these cardinal tetras without significantly impacting their numbers in the wild. One could argue that the aquarium trade helps prevent these fisher people from adjusting their way of life to more destructive practices such as deforestation and farming. On another note, many of the ornamental fish we keep today (betas, goldfish, koi, rams, angels, some other cichlids) are so far removed from their wild origins they can be considered domesticated, much like many of the dogs, cats, and farm animals we have today. They have grown and evolved into a way of life out of nature and putting them in the wild would be harmful to themselves as well as the habitats they would be introduced in to. I am against harvesting fish in unsustainable ways, where over harvesting for the aquarium trade does impact their survivability in the wild. I am not educated enough to know exactly which species those would be but when I am considering a fish I want to keep, it is something to think about and research. I am against keeping fish in unsuitable environments. When I ship fish poorly and they arrive dead, that makes me feel really terrible (I have had a bad streak lately shipping and is really disheartening). If I am neglectful on my maintenance and the water parameters suffer, that isn’t ok and I have to stop and change some things in my life, be that decreasing the number I am taking care of, decreasing the amount I am feeding, or whatever else I have to do, I need to be wary of that. These lives are entrusted to me to care for and help to thrive and it is my responsibility as a Fish can lead happy, healthy, full lives in a glass box and many do. They are isolated from the extremes of weather and climate change. They are fed well. They are generally relatively free from predation. If they get sick, they are isolated and treated, which definitely doesn’t happen in the wild. As long as they are fed appropriately and kept in clean water (sometimes cleaner than they would even experience in the wild), in an appropriately sized tank, I don’t think there is anything unethical about keeping fish.
  5. Wow this is really great information. Is there a table or something that lays out Express rates?
  6. Any tips? I have a whole process Inuse with USPS but never used the other two. Difference in pricing? What service do you use to ship (like what type. Ground, etc) their overnight prices are astronomical. I am getting that Fedes and UPS are not much better than USPs and more expensive so not worth it… Great… It really isn’t fiscally reasonable to ship anything other than USPS priority. I don’t know how other people get away with $40-$50 for overnight. I can’t find those rates.

  8. Hey all, I have been shipping fish. I am pretty fed up with USPS. They are so unreliable. I just shipped angels to my brother and USPs lost the package. Didn’t show up until 5 days later with all the fish dead. Doeas anyone ship with UPS or FedEx? What is your experience. Is their pricing similar? Are they any more reliable? any opinions appreciated. Thanks
  9. Got a lot done today. Built one of the stands and plumbed the supply lines and drainage for the AWC. I also made a DIY python and plumbed a siphon for manual water changes. Building a fish room is tons of work. I went to 3 hardware stores today and I still have some pvc fittings I need to get to plumb the sump pump.
  10. It kind of depends what you are culling for doesn’t it? If I remember correctly, you were working on short body white clouds? If you have healthy fish but they have longer body’s, can’t you sell them or give them away?
  11. Painting (pink. It’s the paint we are least likely to use again 😉 and quite a bit of plumbing done. Placed drain line. Connected my thermostatic mixing valve, fed through carbon block filter and to a garden hose Y. One side has a potable hose on it for manual filling. The other side will have an irrigation timer for auto water changes. I made a rookie mistake of turning on the water too soon. I was too excited to see if it worked like I wanted it to. Pretty sure I caused a leak and am going to have to redo one of the joints. finally, also plumbing in vinyl tubing for manual siphon. This is connected to my drain line.
  12. I will likely look at what paint I have laying around and use that.
  13. Main drain gutter put in with an opening for expansion if needed.
  14. You could try some soundproofing blankets. They look really nice and would provide another layer of insulation for the room. What do you want the room to be? You have pretty much a blank canvas right now. They would also hide cords and airline tubing well. Zenzo did this in his fish room. Nothing wrong with plywood. I went with drywall because code requires gypsum over the kind of insulation I chose for fire resistance. Also drywall is less expensive (if not a little heavier) than plywood
  15. I have mine hatch at 70-75 degrees. I harvest at 24 hrs 36hrs and 48 hrs. The 36hr harvest is definately the heaviest. I freeze mine when not in use and agree that more salt, I do 2L with 2 TAblespoon
  16. Electrical is in. Time to slap on a stick on baseboard, mop up and start on plumbing.
  17. Walls are up. Going to run the electrical next! I’m not going to putty. The drywall is mostly for fire resistance as I don’t care a ton about the aesthetics of the room as it is a temporary fish room. It may be there for years but eventually when we finish the basement this room will turn in to a bathroom.
  18. Hey all, I am building a fish room in my basement. I sort of hijacked another thread so figured I would document the work here. The room is a framed out empty room in the basement. So far I have run electrical conduit, placed insulation, and began putting up drywall. It isn’t going to be fancy. This room will mostly be for my breeding and grow outs. I have display tanks that are more easily accessible in the house. grow outs with have an auto water change on them. My breeding racks will be manual water changes unless I decide I want to put them on an AWC. I like the idea of manually changing water in my breeders. My AWC system will be designed so I can add any of the tanks in the room to it if needed.
  19. They will live for 2-3 days in the hatchery. After that they will die off because of ammonia. I set up the hatchery, then I harvest at 24, 36, and 48 hours. Then my fish are getting bbs at least once per day, and twice every other day.
  20. Chicago building code still requires all copper. It is super annoying because we did a remodel a few years back and it all had to be copper. Costs a fortune. The building code also requires all rigid metal conduit for electrical unless the run is 3 ft or less (could be 6 feet I can’t remember). So that’s the annoyance I have run in to. We have a roughed in bathroom in our unfinished basement. Basically just wood studs framing a room. I am building a fish room in this area. There is a sump pit without a sump pump near by I am going to use as drainage and am working on doing the plumbing for it as well. I will have a water source close as the hot water heater is right next to the room. I just finished the electrical rough in and am working toward insulation. I have the estimates for the room costing $750-$1000
  21. What are the ingredients in that? I have Ich-X. Is that similar?
  22. Hey all, I’m wondering is someone can help me identify this white fuzzy growth coming out of my rams anus. I have attached a picture. temp 82 ammonia 0 nitrate 50 nitrite 0 GH 150 KH 40 pH 6.4 thanks for your help Here is another pic
