  1. Good point. Apistogramma are also a great entry into cichlids I feel
  2. Apistogramma would look good, but may eat your shrimp.
  3. Thank you! This was back when I was keeping nano tanks (Other than the last picture) The last tank was running an Eheim 2215 Canister Filter. It almost flooded the second floor though so I went for a Fluval 307 instead 🙂
  4. It was for my 21st! My parents gave me the cash, I chose to spend on a tank!😂 To be honest I mainly went custom because of clarity & dimensions. It’s optiwhite glass, so as good as it gets (No acrylic for me!) I even considered a Reef tank for a brief moment then I reminded myself of the upkeep😂 Thank you!
  5. Thank you! It was a custom build for my birthday 🙂 My mind has changed more times than I can count for stocking it! I’m thinking African Cichlids at the minute😉
  6. I noticed a lot of people on here maintain planted community tanks. Since I’ve moved on from those setups, I figured I’d give everyone a quick insight into my involvement in the hobby. I hope you guys can get some inspiration from these pictures. All setups were without CO2 & lighting was 8 hours a day.
  7. I’ve honestly not kept Guppies, but I did consider it recently!😂 Don’t worry about a bit of chasing/nipping here and there, I was going to go for 125 or so Guppies in a male-only display tank. I’s a lot easier to deal with male only than population explosions, not to mention colour too. I would bet Guppies breed in any water, so soft water wouldn’t make too much difference to them I don’t think. You’re welcome 🙂
  8. I hope so! I’m going to be setting up 2x African Cichlid tanks so it should be good! I hope to keep the builds updated on the forum😎
  9. Don’t go by inch per gallon, it’ll give you problems. I think most people stock tanks based on their level/experience. For a newbie like yourself, I think you will experience success with- 5 Shrimp-Let the tank mature after cycling it before adding them in 1 Nerite Snail-2 will just lay eggs and be unnecessary 6/7 Guppies-Maybe stick to make only to avoid fry?
  10. Sweet! The white (kinda) light from up above gives me ocean-deep vibes😎
  11. I’m not sure if there’s a real rule for Leaf/Gallon. I’d probably do 2 since it’s doesn’t look too bad at the minute. The main thing is not to go overboard where your parameters are dropping significantly. I hope it works out!
  12. This depends on lots of things- Are you using tap water? How’s the PH/GH/KH? Are you wanting Mbuna’s, Peacocks or Haps? This is Lake Malawi. The most common Lake Tanganyika fish are Shell dwellers, such as Multies and Similis. Your hardscape and stocking will vary based on what you would like to keep.
  13. Betta’s experiencing fin rot can usually heal with just regular water changes and some tannins in the form of Indian Almond Leaves. (IALs) Add a leaf or two in, perform water changes 3/4 times a week (Not too large) & your Betta’s slime coat should benefit from the IALs and clean water. Also remove any possibly sharp decor.
  14. Ooo I’ve not heard this happening before, but I feel like the same thing could happen to any suckermouths. Whenever I noticed my Whiptails/Oto’s near the water line when draining a tank, they seem to swim downwards themselves, so I figure a Pleco would do the same if it felt distressed? Hopefully a Pleco keeper will chime in 🙂
  15. I would bet it’s a CPD. Awesome though. I remember when I was setting a tank up & it had not had any livestock in it for some time but when I filled it up and got to scaping, I started noticing small fry! Turned out it somehow made it from my Minnow setup into the new tank. Sweet!
  16. I don’t think you’d regret Habrosus. Oh no this thread just reminds me those nano species I wanted to try in my nano’s but I never got round to!😂
  17. Maybe not Pygmy’s, as they’ll take up space in the mid level of the tank & I feel could be small enough to get a hard time from your Angel. If you want to stay nano, go for Cory. Habrosus or if you want to go a little bigger, go for Panda Cory’s. I honestly wish I’d tried out dwarf cichlids before going for the bigger boys, they look amazing! I’d probably do a small harem (1:3) of Fire Red Aggassizii. They should pair off naturally from a group of 4 and then I’d keep the pair 🙂
  18. I’d just rinse the substrate out like normal and then put it back into the tank when setting up. When I had planted tanks, I always used peroxide at 3% strength as a dip for quarantine. After you’re confident everything’s okay to go back into the tank, set it up and dose peroxide. After 24 hours, that peroxide will become Oxygen so it would be harmless to inhabitants once they go into the tank.
  19. Mold would be a bigger issue than algae, but I don’t think you’d be attempting this unless you knew what you were doing. You’ve got the go-ahead from me!
  20. That’s a real nice tank & stand! I’d say so. 1 Angel will be fine in there, just add it last and cover the usual things (feed enough, provide enough cover & appropriate stocking etc). I’d go- 10x Cardinals 6x Cory’s (Species dependent) 1x Angelfish (Whichever you like, I like the Manacapuru) 4x Oto’s That would be a nice SA stocking. I’ve been quite conservative with stocking since I’m not sure how confident you feel/your routine maintenance 🙂
  21. You could keep it running to achieve die off, but that’s not a guarantee. If it was me, I’d probably drain the tank and let it sit dry for a few days. Then I’d go 50:50 Bleach and water and then throughly rinse the tank out with water to dilute any bleach. Don’t worry about your plants, they are all very forgiving and won’t mind anything for a while. Just keep them wet and get them some light if possible but don’t worry if you can’t. Also, you’ll probably lose your cycle when you strip the tank down. I’d run it in your other tank for a week or two to get it seeded again and then slowly add small amounts of fish.
  22. A valid concern? Yes. Treatable? Yes. You could either go the Peroxide route, or chuck some Amano’s in after the dry start, IF you do get hair algae again. I wouldn’t sweat it. Start!
  23. Seeing as you already have a Puffer, Betta, and livebearers, I’d go for a classic community tank. What are the dimensions? A planted backdrop to Cardinal Tetras, corydoras & maybe an Angelfish (depending on dimensions) could look sweet. If not, Apistogramma would be fine in a 29. Maybe a SA Biotope?
  24. That’s a real nice setup you have going there! If I was you I’d look into adding some variety into the empty tanks: Go for fish which are a bit different to what you currently have. The 12G could be nice for some dwarf cichlids (Shellies,Apistos etc) or you could look into an African Dwarf Frog tank. They seem dope. My only other real advice would be chuck some backgrounds on the tank. The plants/livestock will really pop. It’s a sweet setup nonetheless 🙂
  25. If you’re only treating for Ich, your first method of medicating should be cranking the temp up to 29/30C for 14 days. That should deal with your ich problem. If that doesn’t work, I’d look into dosing aquarium salt.
