  1. That is neat! There's been an invasive lilypad overtaking Louisiana lakes for over a decade now. Over the past few years, the strange weather has helped cull the lily population with cycles of summer drought & winter freezes. Then the duckweed started growing like crazy, taking its place, and stopping light from activating those invasive lilypad roots. But duckweed is less annoying for outboard motors and jetski/jetboat motors. Super Duckweed saves the day! I got this info from a wildlife & fisheries guy I know. He's awesome, like duckweed 😄
  2. My calibrated digital pH meter matches the API tube results, 7.8-7.9, and the aco test strips read lower. I'd say the aco test stips are about 1pH lower like @modified lungsaid
  3. The OP pic doesn't look like the mini pellia I have in my tank. Even in that lower quality pic, I can tell the leaves look more broad. It looks cool tho. I want some!
  4. I like this idea! Maybe put some on the outflow bar too! I've seen Teddy Bear cholla for sale online, it seems to be a larger version of regular cholla (random example pic taken from the internet)
  5. I made a few quilts for nephews & niece. I dont sew much anymore, but now I'm thinking about a diatom top!
  6. @Remi de Groot& @Lennie I feel more confident, thanks for the posts. The 90g is filled with remineralized rodi. 6-7gh, 5kh (i only add 4gh in CaSo4:MgSo4 ratio of 3:1 & 3kh k2co3- i dunno what's going on there), 200-250 tds, easy green fertz, iron gluconate, 7.9-7.8 pH. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. All epiphytic plants, anubias, java ferns, bolbitis, buce (may not make it), dwarf water lettuce, moss. I added all these plants over ~6 weeks, as I added them I noticed more fry were surviving which was great because the guppy cannibalism was a bit too cringe. 🥺
  7. I got the pics! Mini pellia 💚 The mini Christmas moss looks like a punk rock in this pic 😎
  8. I'm obsessed! This is a well done, short introductory vid with lots of visuals.
  9. I was watching a podcast about Intelligent Design and the speaker shared microscope slides of Victorian era diatom art. They look like fractals. They are gorgeous and fascinating. This is a collage of different diatoms. Apparently, diatoms come in different geometric shapes. This is a closeup of a single diatom.
  10. Cool, I got a rock with mini Christmas moss growing on top of it, it has a hole stuffed with cholla wood, and I'll move it close to a sponge filter. The other cholla stuffed rock has mini pellia growing on top. I hope they like that mini pellia, because it's my favorite! (I'll post pics when I get home in like 8 hours) The shrimp websites sell them for shrimp use.
  11. Online neo-shrimp guides usually list lower temp parameters for shrimp. Some of those guides don't even list temps which I thought was weird, but now I'm thinking that checks out after talkin with yall. Thank @y'all for chatting with me! I'm just gonna put em in the 90g and do my best to keep them alive!
  12. I've had this question in my head for awhile now: Have yall ever frozen leafy greens and then defrosted them? I did that once, like 20 years ago. It wilts the lettuce. So, my question is: Instead of parboiling leafy greens, could the lettuce be stored in the freezer and fed after defrosting? I assume the point of parboiling leafy greens is to make them tender (soggy) for easier snail munching.
  13. I just finished season 1 of the prequel to game of thrones, house of the dragon. I liked it! The writers did a good job!
  14. I was just about to ask you which repashy. Thank you! How much caco3 do you add to a batch? (Do you use a whole bottle of 3oz or 6oz when you make a batch?) @Chick-In-Of-TheSeaone more question. How much water do you use? I add extra, because it's way too thick to work with using the instructions on the label. It starts setting up before I can even wet all the powder
  15. Thanks for the thread reminder @ScottieB It seems I came back to the forum right on time!
  16. I meant to reply to @coffeetoo, and the reply is relevant to help troubleshoot this particular matter. I wouldn't mind having a 10g tank dedicated to shrimp breeding forever.
  17. @nabokovfan87The shrimp haven't shipped yet, so i have a few days to get setup, and I do plan on drip acclimating them. Also, I have some chollo wood making biofilm in my 90g, it was added a couple days ago. @FlumpweeselMy original plan, several months ago was to get beautiful Thai oranda goldfish and shrimp. But then I was gifted guppies and used them to cycle my 90g. I still plan on getting goldfish, but I'm having fun watching these guppies develop as my plants sloooowly grow. A few days ago I decided I needed to add shrimp to my nerite cleanup crew, but I had temporarily forgotten their temperature requirements. 😬 Currently, my 90g heater is set at 78*F. @Rube_GoldfishI don't know those answers, but that is exactly what I'm worried about. My guppies rode out the 90g cycling like Champs! I started with 2 dozen, they reproduced during cycling, and now i have like 60. I've culled a few bent spines and I lost 3 guppies a few weeks after cycling completed. Maybe the shrimp will be champs too?
  18. I ordered some Blue Dream Neocardina, and then I remembered I have a tropical tank... oops. Would it be possible to bypass cycling a new 10g by filling it with water from my cycled 90g tropical tank, and then scavenging the 90g's sponge filter, some substrate, and plants attached to rocks? I also have some bioballs in my 90g's canister filter that I could toss in there too
  19. I was going to say it smells a bit like a locker room. I get whiffs of it occasionally. I've cleaned green algae off my glass lid. Is that green stuff cyno? Great question @JoeQ I didn't even know I had the same question till you asked. I just thought it was a normal thing
  20. Wow, that plecco is fascinating! @Guppysnaillet me ax you some questions. 😄 I use remineralized rodi, and i have horned and zebra nerites. Can they live a beautiful life on Ca in the water, or do I need to give them things like cuttle bone snacks? I assume cuttle bones increase gh & kh & ph? How do you safely remove a snail from glass or from another snail? Why do they constantly visit the same rocks and ignore thick patches of algea on the glass? Can't they smell the food!?! 🤪
  21. I think I have hair algae in my newbie tank. It's not much, right now. It's kind of "pretty" waving in the current 😄
  22. I have to quote you because I can only use 1 post reaction ❤ 💪 😎 I know you'll let us know how it goes! I'm excite!! I went ahead and ordered nerite snails, I figure they're the better snail-newb choice. But I really like the faunus ater and chopstick! I ordered nerites early last week and haven't gotten a shipping notification yet. I haven't cleaned my glass since placing the order in preparation for my new pets... I dunno if I can wait any longer, the diatom algae is breaching my walls! I'm gonna have to go to war without my snail troops!
  23. Yeah, that's what the "cappuccino " snail I mentioned in op is, a faunus ater! There aren't many online convos about them, like with the chopstick snails. I think we've stumbled on a good topic for aquatic content creators!
