  1. The tricky thing is that sick fish may not present symptoms for a few weeks. I quit the drop & plop after I had an ick outbreak that wiped out half my tank. Everyone has a different way of doing things, though. That's what I love about this forum. I love hearing what people have experimented with and how it turned out.
  2. I think they eat inverts too - something to keep in mind if you have any.
  3. Let's ask @Colu. @Colu always has seems to have a treatment plan for everything.
  4. @BrettD the flashlight fish are somethin' else! Wow! 😲
  5. Father Fish told a story in one of his vids about how a Jack Dempsey fell or jumped in his workshop and he couldn't find it. He had tons of tanks at that time. Anyway, running his shop or whatnot he got busy and forgot about the fish. One year later, he was in the workshop and there was an old tank on the floor. He caught a bit of movement out of the corner of his eye, and inspected the tank. The Jack Dempsey was swimming around in it and was big and healthy. He didn't do anything to the tank but it got like, 1 hour of sunlight a day. It was enough to grow algae and that's what the fish had eaten for the year.
  6. I LOVE his videos. Too bad he ended the series. Hopefully we'll see him again. But so relaxing to watch. He did a lot of water changes for sure though. And his shrimp were constantly having babies. I really like the "Father Fish method" and want to give it a try. He is very much pro-Walstad and encourages creating a "food web" in the tank w/ microorganisms. They eat the waste, and the fish eat the microorganisms and the algae, etc. Heavily heavily planted is key. But I do see sponge filters & heaters in his tanks. He says he doesn't really need to do water changes or be on a schedule to do so. Test the water, and if you get good readings, leave it alone. Everyone is going to have their own opinion on this. I'm neutral but I'm just saying that I am interested in the concept. This guy live streams with Father Fish too. They like to collaborate on the dirted tank method.
  7. Of course not. What kind of forum do you think this is? 😉
  8. 25 mystery snail babies moved into new home! 🙂 (growout tank)
  9. With the lookout in place, Corn Colonel also designated an operative to serve as air traffic controller. He was stationed up high at the perimeter at the ingress point. The paratroopers arrived by plasticware chinook, some by twos and some by threes. Some of them were lacking in training and jumped tandem. We received a little bit of footage through the 2 anntenae that were put up earlier. The mission was a success and everyone had a safe landing. A new supply drop of Repashy MREs was sent in. About 5-7 juveniles remain at base, and more are expected to arrive in the near future.
  10. Corn Colonel assigned a soldier to get to high ground and remain there as a lookout. He put up two antennae to ensure the clearest transmission possible. They sent transmission to issue the order for 25 troops to advance into the forward camp. They were told to remain there for 50 minutes to acclimate and await further instruction.
  11. Yesterday the perimeter sweep was completed and a small amount of plant matter was cleared. One of the operatives trekked to the highest point of the perimeter and tested a parachute to ensure the incoming troops would have a safe landing. The supply drop was untouched, but this is of no concern as our agents are trained to live off the land.
  12. Did you get an ammonia reading? Does the growth look fuzzy? Slimy? Or more like a tumor?
  13. Yeah yeah.. sorry for multiple posts but I had to add one more. The upside-down jellyfish. This looks like a part of a reef. Like soft coral. Then the whole thing lifts up and starts swimming around. There are a bunch of different varieties of these and I encourage you poke around the web a bit to check 'em out. (OK I'm done. Ha.)
  14. Other fish I see while diving that I think are "showstoppers" are Queen Angelfish and Gray Angelfish. Despite the depth, the "trim" on their dorsal fin perpetually appears like it's under a blacklight. I love the pattern on the gray angelfish, but my favorite thing is whenever it moves, the side fin opens up, and the part that faces its body is BRIGHT BRIGHT YELLOW. Also highly visible even at depth. Depth being 60' to 90'. For you landlubbers, when I'm saying colors are visible at depth, well, as a diver descends they can no longer see certain colors. It goes back to my Advanced Open Water training which had 4 sections. Referring to the depth part of the course, we are given a color card. Kinda looks like a color card that comes with a test kit, but every color of the rainbow is on there. We are instructed to watch the color card as we descend, and one by one, colors disappear off of it. The first to go is red. However, depth is irrelevant when you have a fish tank because you just look in a glass box and, given the proper lighting, can experience all of the splendor these fish have to offer.
  15. I think arrow crabs are pretty cool. I sometimes see them when diving, particularly in shallow saltwater areas close to shore. I watch them closely. I love their demeanor and their faces. They use their front claw to raise food to their mouth, alternating one claw at a time. I can't afford saltwater, and I don't want to take on the maintenance involved. Heck, you can't even use tapwater. You need "special" water. Heh. No thanks. I see a lot of boxfish while diving. And cowfish are like boxfish but the cowfish have horns. Mainly I see scrawled cowfish.
  16. This morning we received a transmission from the operatives. Everything is going swimmingly. They worked through the night to secure the perimeter high and low. They met one of the locals and he was nice enough and participated in the perimeter sweep. Now, this reflects poorly on the debrief, but we’re told we need to include everything: one soldier was sleeping on the job! Corn Colonel put out feelers to find him. He was eventually located and was ashamed and disappeared off into the woods. We sent in a supply drop of Repashy MREs. This will help them keep their strength up. Hopefully their tracking devices are in good working condition to navigate to the coordinates.
  17. Snail team six has been deployed 🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌 . I had several recruits that were eager to put their best foot forward. We did a quick equipment check and everyone had their helmet on and passed inspection 🐚✅. They were airdropped☂ into a forward camp where they will acclimate and form their plan. (They look like Corn Colonels). 🤣 Time is short ⏳. They have one hour to strategize before they head into uncharted territory!
