What did you get done today?

Today I took 125 more little angels to the LFS. Got $2 each - $1 cash and $1 store credit. Used the store credit to get a dozen dwarf neon (Praecox) rainbows. They look good so far, and they ate some food about 5 hours after being put in the quarantine tank. I think they will spice up the downstairs tank a little and look good against the black substrate and black background.

That’s a nice haul!

OMG...they are so CUTE!! I got 2 Gouramis sisters about 3 weeks ago, and they're currently in the qurantine tank, I can't wait to put them in my display tank! I hope all my fish get along! Yours certainly do! 👍

after having  a heater go out and my fish die.  My tank finished cycling (which yes I forgot needed to be done before adding fish).  So today I got a live plant to go in.  My dragon stone says it has been delivered.  and I got food for my narite snail that is still in there so he doesn't starve.  Giving it another week probably before adding more fish.  I am looking for guppy grass to go in but to no avail so far.

Today I went to the landscape stone yard to get some patio stones, and while I was there I picked up some smooth stones called "Mexican Beach Pebbles" (not sure how a 2lb rock can be a pebble?) and "Antique Cobbles" to use in my tanks. I've got them soaking for now.

And there was great weather for yard work so I took a day off from dividing guppy fry by sex, which means there will probably be 24 new pregnancies tomorrow.

I picked the tank up cheap, its got a few scratches etc, but for $150 im not complaining.

I also went to the beach for a walk with the better half and collected about 60lt of pumice stones.

All in all it was a good day. 🍻

We have a small turtle that will go in there till he gets a bit bigger, I'll move my giant danios in there along with my striped gudgeons and empire gudgeons. Those fish are all outside in this.

Another evolving set up that I'll post up somewhere soon.

Been working on my 40. The picture isn't very good because the phone has problem with the dynamic range but here it is:

42.jpg.8c66101c450efee5a10293f29796443b.jpg

Basically i cleared out the right side. There are 3 very nice plants next to the matten filter; unfortunately you can't see them in this picture but you can see the male borelli above the zuc. Unfortunately just after i took this picture the female came out and grab the male to play some borelli games. The S. repens has actually started growing a bit (I've had it for about a year). You can't really tell but if you look between the zuc and large cluster left of it there are about 6 or 7 new plants magically sprouting up from the substrate. Anyway I took this second picture to show the some of the new plants;

The otto  is on an interesting crypt called Siamensis Rosanervig. The picture doesn't do it full justice since it is a bit darker than shown - very nice plant. Above it you see a few leaves from the tiger spiralis. I think i prefer the red spiralis which i have in front behind the zuc.

One of these days I'll clean out the mess on the left similar to the right. Not sure when. This is the old picture before i started reworking the right:

I got to watch my brand new hummingbird tetras die right in the bag in front of my eyes.  Not the ones I got last week, but ones I found from a local source.  They delivered them and noticed that one had died in the bag during the drive.  Then 2 more died when they stopped in front of the house and looked again.  Then AS I WAS LOOKING AT THE FISH in the bag, while the seller was STILL THERE, 2 more went belly up as he was recalculating the price with now 5 of 9 fish dead.

He ended up just giving them to me since they were clearly all in deep trouble with very poor chance of survival.  So at least I wasn’t out money.  I plopped the bag in the QT tank while I ran to get my net and bucket to dump out the fish, and my IR thermometer so I could check the bag temp and make certain it wasn’t way too far off tank temp.  The bag was only a couple degrees cool, so I did a plop and drop, but only 2 were moving by then (not even 5 minutes after arrival at my house), and they didn’t last long after that.

It was strange to see that I could tell almost immediately that they were definitely dead and not just shocked, because their clear flesh would get cloudy far more quickly than I expected.

So, not a happy day overall, but nothing I could have done differently on my end.  The seller was nice enough, but I certainly won’t be buying from him again after finding out that he doesn’t do any QT or holding at all.  He got them after 11:00 last night and delivered them around 11:00 am today.  And I find it hard to believe that he dropped them last night, then caught them again today to rebag them.

Yesterday was water change day so i started clearing out the left side of the 40B;

I should probably have waited a few more weeks to post this picture as I just removed some stuff yesterday. The primary reason is to allow certain plants at the bottom to obtain more light. I still have a stalk of PSO on the left that is growing emersed since it produces such a lovely purple flower in that form.

43.jpg.ae4f47070bd0b8d51ca82e298a1f9050.jpg

Same picture from the top - in the middle we still have some floating ha'ra rotala. I have mix feelings on this plant as a floater since it produces such a lovely colour i'm reluctant to remove it all but it grows quite dense and produces a massive cloud below. I figure if ii can keep it in the middle over the java fern it it is ok. I'd love to dump the java fern in the middle but there are certain fishes that love hiding in it.

This is a couple of my favorite sword plant. The red one is prinz kleiner (not to be confused with the more common prinz bar) and in front of it you see a Parviflorus (sometime called Rosette). At one time i consider carpeting the aquarium with this plant but I find i just don't have enough space for all the plants i'm growing. I much prefer this plant to something like dwarf sag or similar (which i have a little on the right). The grass like plant right in front of the sword on the right is orange/red version of Blyxa novo. Mine doesn't turn very orange probably because i have an inert substrate but it has a lot of texture to the leaves - a lot more than some of the other grasses - it also grows a bit higher. In the very front is a tiny Jacobensii pink that is struggling a little since i pinched it off the parent prematurely. It is a bit pale - the plant is really a bit darker and very nice texture for a crypt. I believe it will recover but i need to give it a month or so to recover from the shock of mother being moved.

I found some platy fry today while I was doing maintenance. Hopefully they will make it, the tank has rams and tetras but it also has a ton of plant cover so maybe at least a few can run the gauntletIMG_20220308_151856630.jpg.c62f681549b8b001ca4278df515cd91f.jpg

I recently also got platy fries too!! Can't wait for them to grow up!

Thanks mate.

It's steadily coming along.

Middle Pannel comes off complete to give me access to the sump.

Lots to do still, but I'm pretty happy. As long as I don't look to close, I will never be accused of being a cabnet maker.

After I did the water changes on my larger tanks; I checked the 5 and noticed one of my shrimps was infected with a million and one tiny white something or other. I presume these are the famous berries that shrimp get. Now I know most of you have shrimps and this is a daily occurrence but for me it is the first time! I've tried shrimps several times but after a few weeks they all die. The only real difference this time is i replaced the heater with something more reliable. Being a 5 gallon aquarium I thought one of those cheap $12 heaters would be fine but i guess it wasn't.... For historical perspective this is my third attempt in the past 14 months.

Please post a pic as close up as you can manage.  There are a couple other things that can look a lot like eggs if you’ve never seen berried shrimp in person.  I just want to make sure it’s not an issue vs. a joyful event.

Here are a couple of pictures - not great but hopefully good enough:

And for some sad news in the 5 one of my three hairy mystery snails was assassinated by assassin snails 😞
