  1. I agree with previous posters on it being biofilm. It looks like the surface proteins when they break up on the surface and then swim all over the tank. I would not worry about it, but keep an eye on water quality.
  2. I love the Fantastic Four and their friends! Always showing a wonderful side of science that can help our tank critters. Now I may have an explanation as to why my critters like to come out and play when my other family members crank the amps and start jamming. But, alas, I am the only tone deaf family member... 🤪 I do swear by the presence of increased O2!
  3. I was feeding once a day, with nems getting shrimp and/or fish once every two weeks. There is a very healthy population of copepods at the moment, and it is fun to watch the gobies do the sideways chomp on the tank walls. I always worry that I am overfeeding, so I am trying to cut back for all tanks, putting the FW ones on the same schedule. 🙂 They get along great with the tank creatures, especially the gobies. They poke fun at the kelp crabs by sitting on their heads.
  4. Nice to catch up with your journal, @Chris! That puffer is too much fun! Now my husband wants a turtle! 🙃
  5. Most fun: Chinese Algae Eater and Pea Puffer. They are both very playful and act like puppies. Most disappointing: Kuhli Loach (never see it, but see the dead Pygmy cories after being injured by its big whacks), and CPDs, too aggressive.
  6. No drama in the drama box. One update though: the V-Sump is now very efficiently keeping the tank clean with just one sock change per week. Feeding now every 2-3 days, all critters happy! Increasing the air bubbles is making the macros happy and they are growing like crazy! 😀 Ursula Flerken dressed up as “The Invisible Flerken” for Halloween and ate all the candy in the tank! 🤪
  7. Not at all. You know you crossed because your speed signs change from Km to Miles. View from hotel room in Sligo, downriver the place is amazing! Bushmills had the Salmon and Whiskey Festival while we were there.
  8. Started in Dublin, then drove all the around clockwise, departing from Dublin. Dublin, Kilkenny, Cashel, Cork, Middleton, Clonakilty, Glengarriff, Kenmare, Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher, Dingle, Tralee, Ennis, Lahinch, Doolin, Galway, Omey Island, Westport, Sligo, Donegal, Viking Island, Annagry, Letterkenny, Londonderry/Derry, Castlerock, The Causeway, Belfast, Newgrange, Kells, Trim, and pretty much stopped in any little place that looked interesting. Lots of river fishing, and fun to see the tackle shops. Food was excellent! I wish we had had more time, so hopefully on our next visit the focus will be the hiking and interior of the country. The weather was too unpredictable to do mountains this time of the year. It is a stunning country, and it looks a lot like home! 🙂
  9. I love my gobies. LBF (Little Brown Fish as @Biotope Biologistcalls them), always with the goofy dial turned all the way up! Your little guy looks adorable as he guards his rock! 😍
  10. I did explore the possibilities of having aquariums there! 😉 View from airplane window. It is good to be back! This is what they looked like when I got home: Ursula Flerken came out this morning:
  11. Well, no casualties that I can see. Ursula Flerken is still hiding, so I hope he is OK, just lazy. So, no feeding for almost four weeks, just the pods and macros in the tank. None of the critters look emaciated, and they took to food quite happily this morning. They cleaned the tank by consuming the diatoms. Ireland was amazing! Pods in Ireland: The one on the upper left corner of the picture was found in Doolin Cave. Very rich in limestone, very happy pods. Crab in tidepool on Omey Island: Wonderful tidepools: Beautiful Atlantic! Not so fond of pictures. This is what happens when you ask them to smile! But this little guy was game:
  12. Ahhh, wonder no more! I just got back from Ireland, and have not really seen the tank. It is still dark here, between shorter days and smoke, but did get to pull the dirty socks off the V-Sump and Oh, dear!!!, were they disgusting. Almost black, yet not smelly. Parameters tested fine last night, but I was exhausted, so I am not putting too much stock on that reading. As lights come on and I get going on the real cleaning, I will post detailed updates. 🙂
  13. I rely on this for my SW tank, as it is using mostly chemical and mechanical filtration until I can get the right macros to grow. I have only used it as an emergency organic remover when I know my plants can’t handle the load in my FW tank, and I can’t do a WC. I would not rely on it as a regular filtering regime.
  14. They look like aphids, I have them in a couple of my tanks. They provide a great source of food for minnows, sparkling gourami and corydoras.
  15. Ah, yes! Always a challenge. I have not had condensation issues yet, even when the house has reached high 98F the tank stays clear. The lines do sweat a bit, though. I think next year I will insulate them a little better as I don’t think the crazy Summer temperatures will go away. I dream of a deep sea tank with a critter like this one:
  16. Saw Ali Farka Toure at the Moore a little while back! Fun group! The Ry Cooder collaboration album is also excellent!
  17. The Biggest Ideas in the Universe: Space, Time, and Motion. by Sean Carroll Just got it! I know what I am doing tonight! 😁
  18. What a fun visit! I noticed the diatoms in their eelgrass, maybe that is the key to successfully growing it! 😎
  19. I have used it, and still do when I need to raise my KH. I have a tank of inverts that tends to go too low on pH and KH and that is how I raise and maintain both.
  20. Your water parameters are not fine. Ammonia needs to be 0, and if you have minnows, the water temperature is a bit too warm for them. Crystal clear water is not necessarily a sign of a healthy environment for fish. It would be great to identify the source of ammonia. Have you had a fish die that you could not find?
  21. Mine started as floaters and eventually developed roots. They should be fine.
  22. I get this algae in my SW tank every now and then. I control it by cutting down the light period. The tank gets direct sunlight some months, and this definitely contributes to its presence. I do not vacuum or do anything in the tank. Also, a chiton now lives there and does laps consuming the algae that grows under the surface. I sometimes want to encourage it as a food source for some of the critters.
