Perhaps I should let you know that as I was trying to net fry during a birth, I saw the mom pop one out, and instantly snap around and gulp it. It's entire lifespan in the water was about 1 second.

But yeah, being young can cause low numbers too. Of the 3 drops I've had, the youngest mom had the smallest drop. (And Miss Gulp was fully grown, so they might get "better" at predation as they have practice.)

Waaaaaah. I am glad I have not witnessed that.

But being familiar with parenthood, I can't blame her either. 🤣

I showed my kids the Nat Geo special on cheetahs, where the mom eats the kitten that refuses to follow directions, and the biologist explains why the conservation of resources is so critical (the kitten doesn't stay in the tree as told, and messes up the hunt).

Then my adopted dad shared his story of growing up in a sod house, and his brother not following directions and got bit by a rattler.😳

So far, my kids haven't needed therapy from any of the stories we shared as a family, so I think we did alright🤔

😅😅😅

Sounds like a good parenting lesson to me!  Ignore your parents, face the consequences.  😆

I'm working on hoplo catfish. I've gotten bubblenests and spawning but the eggs and bubblenest disappear after the spawn. I'm hoping because it's their first spawn it's like cichlids and they'll figure it out the more they attempt.

Stunning! I'm enamored with bright shiny blue on fish, but I need to stick with easy fish, so options are limited. (I recently put my only blue endler in the same tank as all the mature girls and the 1 angel. Give ya 1 guess what the angel did.) Anyway, gorgeous!

Cherry shrimp after 1 year 2E307E0E-3DFA-4454-840E-DC31B6DB9006.jpeg.3e8957d09ae77e04dd05e17a4fd8cf21.jpeg

In this tank I have claimed/ said I have 150+ cherry shrimp (even said probably closer to 200) that started from a group of 12 bought at my LFS. Tonight I noticed a good gathering of them, not the most I’ve seen at one time but a good bunch. I did a count and got 110. Ive got the dragonstone set up with housing them in mind. With caves, crevices, hides, and openings all around both structures. I know I will one day but I have no intentions too but I would love to take it apart and get a total count. It’s so hard to say how many are in there. And from that same group of 12 I have atleast 100 others scattered throughout my other tanks. A41B2341-FFF0-468A-B760-1F9E3021336E.png.e3b5301689f117f9910e9fd56dc98c96.png

this is the first pic I have of them Oct/ 13/ 2020. It where they spent 6 months I took 10 that started the 100+ I have in other tanks. Then probably 3 months later I moved the big colony from this 20G into the 60G. I can see 5 of them in there. So it’s been almost exactly a year. 12 to 250+

The main food source is Xtreme krill flake then a varied diet of Xtreme shrimpee pellets, crab cuisine, vibra bites, and Xtreme pellets.

I'm going to be working on breeding some U.S. Native species. I have a few Etheostoma zonale arriving in the mail this weekend (Banded Darter).

They're egg layers, and need some live foods to thrive. I've got a 20 gal set up for them.

Also coming in the shipment will be another pair of Etheostome caeruleum (Rainbow Darter).

They'll be joining a pair already in a 29 gal with Rainbow Shiners.

We've gotten interested in Darters this year, particularly spiked by my young son finding some Fantail Darters in our tiny backyard Creek.

They're fairly easy to catch, examine, and release when the summer lowers water levels.

I'm also keen to get at least one suitable pair of my Discus to spawn. There are really only two color patterns from what I have  that would work: either Pigeon Bloods pair off, or dark Turquoise Snakeskin (I'm not actually sure if that's the correct description)

While I love the variety of colors here, I've found that the most stand-out fish are the Red and the white-red Pigeon Bloods. The darker blue Discus blend into the scenery a lot, especially if there's dark substrate and dark hardscape in a planted tank.

I'll be getting a small R.O. system to hook up to my faucet soon. I'll mix R.O. with tap water to lower TDS. Also will be soon ordering a few shipments of live black worms. That tends to tip the scales towards breeding. From there, the key is to have a dedicated 20-gal breeding set up with bare bottom, breeding cone, sponge filters, and _light_ colored backing and sides for that fry will only move towards parents to feed on their slime coat.

@Fish Folkthose darters are amazingly cool, especially for a native species. I can’t wait to see how this goes. Will you be journaling this process? The 20G you have set up for them it looks like it was a kit and you still have the original hood and light. Are you getting that plant growth from that light
The discus look amazing as well. I agree the darker blues blend in and get muted, would love to see them on a light background and a white sand substrate.

You always have such an interesting way of bringing the rest of along.

Thanks! Here’s a long rambling video about my Banded Darter tank (pre-fish)…

  • 4 weeks later...

My current breeding projects are: Sailfin Shiners (Pteronotropis hypselopterus), Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), Orangethroat Darters (Etheostoma spectabile), Red Shiners (Cyprinella lutrensis), Red Dragon Guppies, Wild Guppies, and four different swordtail guppy experiments (all with females from my wild guppies which already have a bit of a topsword, the males for three of them are two topswords and a doublesword (obviously different projects) from my lfs, and the fourth one is an especially colorful male from my wild guppies).

Fish I'm waiting to grow out to breed are: Yellowbelly Metallic Livebearers, Blue Paradise Fish, and Panda Corys.

Fish to breed in outdoor tubs next summer are: Bluefin Killifish, Golden Topminnows, Blue-spotted Sunfish, Florida Flagfish, and most of the aforementioned fish.
