ange
The worst that I can remember receiving is when I had my first betta and it came home with fin rot. I had looked for treatments and seen that aquarium salt was recommended for initial treatment and started to do that. When he didn't improve, I went to a forum (not here) for advice. The recommendation that I received was to do a full water change to get the salt out of the system and use ONLY Seachem Stressguard as treatment, because salt and meds are harmful. That betta died within weeks because the fin rot continued advancing to the point where it affected his body. I'm not mad at the people who gave me that advice because it probably worked on their fish that came home with a less advanced disease. I'm upset that I let misinformation get the best of me and I killed a fish because of it. I believe that every hobbyist will make every mistake but it doesn't sting any less that I messed up with treating disease. 1

Patrick M. Bodega Aquatics
That bettas can't live any other fish. Oh, and like ken Burke, keeping small fish like fantail goldfish in a bowl is okay.
ange
I've definitely been guilty of a fantail goldfish in a CritterKeeper as a young child.
FriendlyLoach
Goldfish grow to the tank size, and green water means the tank is dirty. I ended up doing lots of water changes.

DaveSamsell
One of the worst pieces of advice I received was to layer the bottom of the aquarium with rusting metal, for a source of iron. 👹 2 3 3
ange
Wow. That's a pretty OG way to do it! I remember hearing to add nails for this reason.
DaveSamsell
@ange, Thankfully, I didn't follow their bad advice with the metal, with my beginner aquarium. It would have been iron overload, plus whatever other chemicals\elements that would have potentially leached into the water column.
ange
I wasn't around when it was advice that people gave out so have only heard stories about it. I'm so glad I live in the age of liquid ferts 😂
DaveSamsell
@ange, Most of my green plants don't need a lot of iron anyway. I use Aquarium Co-Op's liquid "Easy Iron" in my aquariums, as needed.
ange
I have red root floaters and they're pretty poor competitors in my tanks so I've had the most luck dosing them with Easy Green + Iron. I've never dealt with deficiency in my dwarf lily or rotala but the floaters really need the extra boost from it haha. They're also my newest plant so not very well established and that could be part of it.

Aubrey
"Get some Malaysian Trumpet Snails for your substrate." Now, this wasn't exactly horrible advice. I just wish I would have not followed it or have done more research on how prolific they are. Snail substrate isn't exactly the look I'm going for. 2 1
Ben Ellison
I think the worst advice I got was just get a tank its a cheap fun hobby. Now I have 7 tanks and spent thousands hahaha 5
