    So I've got this old tank that I got super cheap. I really like it, set it up with some plants and got a lovely Oscar. All is perfect but I'm not enjoying the lid. It's old and cracked and the light is pretty poor. What are my options on replacing the lid. Is it a case of getting glass to fit?

    I will have to observe now as I water changed and only noticed during. Will that have damaged eggs??

    So I was doing some routine maintenance on one of my smaller tanks, I had recently added some paradise fish in there along with some mollies. The LFS was trying to get rid of the paradise fish and I got them for free. I've two females and one male. (I think) I noticed all thee bubbles and got a fright! Like it was some sort of weird disease or something, but now I'm wondering is it breeding activity? I don't know alot about these fish so any information is great!

    I believe it is rotala rotundifolia. I has defo been converted as ive seen it in the LFS for the last few months just sitting there.

    Picked up these random un-labelled plants today. I'm new-ish to the planted tank side of things and apert from them being stem plants I have no idea. Any help is appriciated.

    I forgot to mention i used a coat hanger, and some tape to bend the hose into a hook shape

    about 10 gallons. You could easily keep some other fish if ou wanted to

    I have the same problem, did some research and built my own python system with garden hose and a similar plumming atachments. The inlilne valve lets me shut off when syphoning move to next tank, and start back up again. Close the inline valve when all tanks drained, take the end of the hose and connect to tap, start filling.... open valve... close, move tank, open..

    So this is my understanding, the salt removes hardness. if the fish want hard water liike guppies would then you need to add hardness back in or, bypass the sofetner when water changing. If the fish dont want hard water then no need to worry....carry on as normal. What I dont get is this......... How much salt is safe for fish. i cant really find anything that shows if fish can tolarate the salt from the softener long term. I have been looking into this as i will be moving soon to a house that will be using a softener.

    I think EVERYONE needs a hobby. I believd this to be true before i even got into aquriums. I just wanted an aqurium for my house, and decided my daughters birth in febuary was the perfect time. I had no idea about plants or anything. Now nearly 9 months later ive got three. a 5 gallon, a 10 gallon and a 65 gallon with an oscar. I have hundreds of hours invested into my tanks and i dont even wanna think about the hours online researching. It may even be a border line addiction. I have a lot of things im interested in and things i take part in but nothing has grabbed me like this hobby has. Aqurium COOP has a role to play in that as their youtube page helps to normalise the idea of it as a "hobby" Great post, got my brain jusices going. Cheers!

    As well as uping the dose of fert, i would consider changing less water. aim to keep the nitrates between 10-20ppm range, if you finding this means adding lots of fertaliser you have a good problem, maybe you have room for more fish as the plants are consuming more waste than the current fish are producing..... if that makes sense?? It is a balance of water changes, amount of waste being produced and amount of ferts being added. But know, as the plants grow bigger they will also need more nutrients. Bsically, IMO id start with changing less water, and maybe adding some more fish

    I prefer the German Blue just from an asthetic point of view. Not sure how well they would adapt to brackish water tho. Would love to know how it goes and what you choose!

    I should have mentioned in op that I have seen zero adverse affects (so far) of neglecting the prime. I think I'm going to leave it out for the foreseeable, so some more research and I'll report back if I find any difference. Or see any changes

    I live in a small rural town in Ireland. So it's not city water but it's equally not a well.

    The last two water changes I've done on my tanks I've completely neglected to to add prime! I had originally just looked up online for my area is said to have "some levels of chlorine" I also have crazy hard water... Lots of calcium because I can see the deposits on appliances but I've not specifically tested the levels. However, the tetra 6 in 1 strips seem to be registering zero chlorine from my tap. Would this be enough to stop dosing prime during water changes? I also have about 10-20 ppm of nitrates coming from the tap also.

    I'm happy to hear you've got the patience to do it like that! Patience pays dividends in this hobby! Don't forget to fertilize those plants to maximize success! Especially in a new tank!! Would not mind a pic on this thread when you get your self up and going. Best of luck!!

    I just leave all mine in there and feed super heavy with a variety of foods, like upto four times a day. this results in more water changes but its worth it to see all the fry. Also more cover means higher survival rate. cant have enough plants!

    There are a few good species that come to mind when establishing a shrimp coloney. I am currently doing it in a 10 gallon with guppies, they also produce like crazy and it is so fun to watch. once everyone is fed well ive never seen a guppy hassle a shrimp. The fact i have it planted helps to, but the shrimp are often hard to spot (i hope with time there will be enough to easily see). I started with like 8 rec cherry. Also Bristlenose plecos seem like a great option. With a tank that big you could easily do a few pairs as long as you havesome caves for them. They will also breed super easy and fun to watch. When I can didicate a tank big enough that is what I wanna do. Lots and lots of guppies, shrimp and bristtle nose. Maybe even sell some back to LFS and get some credit or free food or somthing.
