@PineSong I lived on the east coast as a child. I do not miss the poison ivy nor the summer humidity!

My gardens, my plants & my animals all bring me the greatest joy & satisfaction in life. I've had some houseplants in my care for 30 years! I've had a Linden tree in a pot I've schlepped around with my entire adult life. My plants are as much pets to me as my animals.

It amazes me it took them that long to figure out it wasn't working!

I grew up in various parts of NC, with intermittent escapes elsewhere.

Got to WA via meso & s. america, with a decade stint in the Land of Entrapment in between. No false advertising there, the Land of Entrapment calls everyone back home, eventually.

Yup. Looking at real estate in the Land of Entrapment is one of my less productive hobbies, and I've only been there once!

Umm, where exactly is the land of entrapment?? 😅 That's not one I've heard..

When I first ended up here in 1993, it was also known as "water, water, nowhere, and way too much to drink". they've lowered the DWI death rates, but the license plate "Land of Enchantment" is only partially accurate. Once you drink the water here, it will *always* bring you home. (The Land of the Pueblos, aka NM)

Out looking at my rose garden this morning. Noticed they looked VERY chewed up and last week they were fine.
Guess this is my year to deal with the infamous spotted lantern fly 😡. So by this time next week I expect all three gardens to be stripped to just stem 😭3C750A78-DD67-476B-8EA2-148D35A3FE7A.jpeg.6427c8ce1baf5ea2252c9c8ab2982676.jpeg

This is a Voodoo Lily, Amorphophallus konjac, planted by my husband's grandmother, probably at least 30 years ago, maybe longer. We're having a heat wave here in the PNW & it just fully opened today. At 1st I thought there must be a dead animal nearby, and then I remembered... Ugh! At least we just got AC so all the windows are closed!

Living in a condo this is the only garden i can setup. It has only been setup for a month. There are 4 plants:

pinto anubia - the old submersed leaves are turning brown the but a whole bunch of new emersed leaves have grown in this short period of time. next to it is a flamingo pink and it has two nice new pink leaves.

Bottom left and right are two pink jcaboii and a middle left is a tiny nurii rosen. The pink jcaboii has two new emersed leaves forming nothing with the the nurii rosen left (my larger plant sent out a runner so i snagged it - the leaves were tiny but it had a good root system). Anyway this is my garden and i will baby it for the next year or two. I suppose I should post a nicer picture - sorry about that. I'm really unhappy with this phone camera - maybe when the xperia come out i'll switch to it.

Oh no! that will be a pity. Your colors are fabulous and those flowers look super healthy. I hope your plants will be spared. Japanese beetles got my yellow rose down to the stems about five weeks ago; she is making a small comeback right now. They barely touched my coral 'knockout' rose and did not bother my native roses at all. (This is not a plug for native roses; they are relatively terrible plants!)

Condo gardens count, too! It's nice to have a patch to baby. Nice work on transitioning those plants-I've never grown flamingo but would like to try one day.

They stripped most of the leaves off all my long stem roses 😞. Funny you mention the coral knockouts. So far they were not touched but yesterday I found 1 juvenile SLF on the coral knockouts my hubby planted last year.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is “Casper’s Garden”. It’s a memorial garden planted with white flowering plants in remembrance of my dog who passed away in May. He was the bestest friend. We made a lot of memories over the last 13 years and and for such a tiny little guy, he sure did have a very large piece of my heart. He was my cuddle buddy, sounding board, my TV buddy, silent supporter, mini  personal heater and most lovable little friend. There will never be a time that I won’t miss him.

Casper was a handsome fellow and a memory garden is such a nice tribute. It's never easy when we lose a beloved pet; I hope you take comfort knowing he had the good life with you!

If you can pick up some Dr Bronner's peppermint soap, you might be able to save your roses. I used to put the soap in my Miracle Grow applicator (bought specifically for soap application, lol) and spray your roses down in the evening. If possible, sprinkle lady bugs and/or indigenous praying mantii on your rose bushes after spraying down.

The predator bugs will take care of any juvenile offenders, and spraying the adults off at night with a glycerin based soap will keep most of the adults off. I posted a video on plants natural responses to various insect attacks on my "Argument" post. I suspect that's the secret behind using glycerin based soaps. The peppermint oil residue will deter new attacks.

Good luck!

Thank you for this. He did have a good life, but he made mine so much better. He really was my best friend and I miss him so much, but I have his garden to remind me of all the memories we had. He is so dearly missed.

So envious!  Current temp outside is 88 with a dew point of 72. all my flowers are wasting away

Topping things off, my AC is out.

Can't go outside, can't stay inside.  I'm melting.  Melting

Lilies from the clearance rack last year, earning their keep. They smell divine in the evenings.

My family is still back East. It's been 100 F with 95% humidity for too many weeks, and A/C used to not be needed.... Lots of homes getting retrofitted... if HVAC has the supplies in stock.

Kind of like the PNW last year with the heat dome...

88° sounds pretty good.  My local 10-day forecast is below.  And yes, that's why I don't have any nice pictures to show.  I'm struggling to keep plants alive, much less blooming (though the Ceratostigma plumbaginoides is still blooming some).
