We've got several hummers living in our backyard again now, also included a picture of my "outside angelfish" from Talavera Mexico LOL.The Hummingbird Carpet is still just coming in but with the Bee Balm, Red Birds in a Tree, Trumpet Vine, Larkspur, Anise Hyssop and Lilies it's a full time job for the hummers.

I’m going to add Crocosmia and Salvia “hot lips” to the hummingbird attractor list. They’re both plants that don’t care if they get water.

Is the little white and red fairy looking plant in the background a type of Lobelia @Patrick_G?  Pretty!

@Trish, the red and white plant is Hot Lips Salvia. It’s my favorite plant for my area. It doesn’t need water and the deer ignore it and it has two bloom cycles each summer. Its only drawback is that it’s ugly in the winter.

@Patrick_Gperfect for here, water restrictions all summer, and perhaps all the elk will ignore it. They just pruned my raspberry's for me.

@Patrick_G whoops, now saw that he mentioned that the hummingbirds and pollinators love them. But I can vouch for that. My hotlips tho are in a pot so they are a bit starved for water at the end of the day!

I do water them a little if they’re in a pot and the first tear they’re in the ground.

Red, pink, purple, and several shades in between, although the blueish purple bee balm spreads the most. hummers and butterflies will frequent all of them but the hummers definitely prefer the red, and with them being such a desirable piece of property you'll see the most amount of aerobatics, and mini dogfights over the red bee balm.

So this female twelve spotted skimmer started hanging out in our garden, and since I don't have a deck pond out this year I'm actually happy about it because they eat mosquitoes. The hummers are still active and after all the rain this year so far the purple bee balm seems to want to show the rest of our flowers who's boss around here.

Some short snap shots while I was sitting in the garden cleaning my camera:

What’s your favorite plant for the dog days? We’re having a drought and almost always have dry summers but the Hot Lips Salvia never fails.

I don't have a photo handy, but plumbago is one of my favorites.  It stands up well in the heat and gets by with little to no supplemental watering (which isn't a small consideration in southeast Texas).  The blue flowers are a bonus, since I really like blue flowers in the garden.

The neighbors are friends with my cat, Valcour. They must be aware that he helps fertilize the raised beds. 🙂

They have water plumbed to each bed, but I don't know if it is currently active. I spoke to them about putting my tubs out next to the beds, so next summer might be interesting!
