  1. Congratulations! That's the best though, isn't it!?
  2. This is what I know as staghorn. very weird. I would try a dip in something, maybe H202 just to see what that does to it. It won't harm the fish at all and you can put it back in the tank.
  3. Beautiful blue on that fish! Really nice cichlids. Welcome to the forum, happy to have you here. Have you ever considered swapping the 55 for a 75, or were you thinking you'd need something bigger like a 120?
  4. Definitely a question for the 3.0 thread, but just a quick offhand to get you started, I almost always start with: Pure White: 45% Warm White: 40% Cool White: 30% Red: 35-40% Blue: 1-5% Give the plants a week at least to get used to the tank and the water, then focus a bit more on how they are doing.
  5. To your other question. Partially the light placement depends on where the plants are, but to maximize coverage I would have them 1/3 of the way from the front and back of the tank. Right next to one another isn't good for heat or for spread. Slightly apart helps with refraction and the penetration across the entire substrate.
  6. Good question.... I personally don't follow the "leave it alone" method. If I see ammonia and I have lifestock, then I do water changes. Let's say I'm cycling a new tank, I have it setup, I toss in the filters and some fish food and let it sit. I know just based on water volume, how much food I should add to "cycle" the tank and then I add a little bit every few days. That's my ammonia source. In that instance, yeah, let it sit. There's no fish and it's a very, very controlled situation. Let's say I had a tank and there was a cycle, my cycle crashed, and I'm testing for ammonia now. In that situation, regardless of how much, I'm doing water changes every 24 hours if I need to. I opt for 50% WCs normally. If things go a bit haywire and I have over .5 ppm, then I'll do a bigger WC and follow that with my normal 40-50% WCs until things are settled. I test daily, morning and night if need be in that situation so I can map out of ammonia is stable and waiting to be processed or if the ammonia is still spiking somehow. I check for a dead fish and check that all equipment is working. Water changes dilute the ammonia, and then testing helps me understand what on earth is going on.
  7. It's very likely the sand. What kind of sand? Aragonite? As mentioned above, something is leeching be it hardscape or sand. What is your PH? GH I seriously ignore. KH I try to keep around 80 ppm (I believe that's around 6 degrees). Your main issue is going to be shrimp. Whatever they demand in terms of GH and PH/KH. You basically want to use a to like aqadvisor or others and compile a list of parameters that make sense for each species and then decide how the tank compares to those needs.
  8. I don't have any issues with them with amanos. A lot of people use them for snails and shrimp. Interesting.
  9. According to Seachem, no. It's very similar to water softener or other resins used to remove "stuff" from the water. Unfortunately there's not really a color guide to what is going on and what is being removed. The best you'll get from seachem is that it removes "what is in excess". Very strange to me. So.... When it comes to tannins I would encourage you to do a few things. First, soak it (which you did), but just understand that the point of organics in the water is to have that benefit. Wood has aufwuchs which is something that fish and inverts do graze on. It's a good thing, so don't be afraid of having a slight coloration to the water. Secondly, if you're have a massive amount of tannins then you would do best to remove those with water changes. If you're changing 30%, try 40% and see if that gives you the clarity that you're looking for. I have two tanks, one of them has mopani that is over 5 years old and it still leeches a ton of tannins for me. The other I have is ghostwood (similar in some ways to manzanita but bigger) and it is a crystal clear tank. Neither of them have carbon. One has a HoB and the other has sponge filters. Type of wood matters, but needless to say I think you just have to control it via maintenance and learn that there's going to be a little tinge, especially early on. Get a tidal 35 branded pack of carbon and use that bag. It's wonderful. Purigen usually comes in a bag already, but I understand the question based on the above convo. 🙂
  10. Nice choice! Can't wait to see the Setup with them doing awesome.
  11. Yeah, I don't think it's any long term issue. Might split down the ray. I use sandpaper, when I can't use that I use those pick hooks to smooth out edges. If you really need it you can use a file too. They have them for all kinds of things and they do some in handy. Depending on the material, even a hairdryer might work to soften the edges or deburr things.
  12. A lot of stuff like that seems to be listed for flower decor. Toppings for flower pots. Glad you're finding stuff you like!
  13. Oh. This i like. TELLW Aquarium Bottom Sand Aquarium Landscape Decorative Bottom Sand Small Stone Gravel Colorful Mixed Sand fine Sand https://a.co/d/bLparbL A few colors available
  14. Found this.... Photo seems weird, price seems good. I'd check reviews but might be something to look at. Spectrastone Deep River Regular for Freshwater Aquariums, 25-Pound Bag https://a.co/d/3Z67IgZ
  15. I would try to find a gravel that has a little bit of character to it. Some black as well as color. I really, really like the ADA gravel, but it's been out of stock on Amazon for over 2 years since I first saw it on there. I ended up with seachem substrate, but let me see what I can find that seems nice! Something like this, but this is probably too chunky. Price isn't too bad. [18 Pounds] Aquarium Gravel River Rock, Natural Polished Decorative Gravel,Garden Outdoor Ornamental River Pebbles Rocks, Polished Gravel, Mixed Color Stones, for Landscaping, Vase Fillers (20) https://a.co/d/fWrTMFF I've also seen a lot of people use this: Carib Sea ACS00832 Peace River Gravel for Aquarium, 20-Pound (1 Bag) https://a.co/d/1kw1pjJ
  16. Currently had this happen and it's been a lot of back and forth. A. Food on Amazon is extremely weird if they even have it. If they do, you better check price. B. I did find some cheap manzanita and botanicals and then read where Someone nuked their bank because the batch had pesticides. Buy that from a place you recognize. C. Any sort of aquascaping tools may or may not be great. I have a really hard time with Amazon and quality.... Substrate is a great choice. Unfortunately the bag rips often and you have to go through the refunds which is why the prices can be nuts. I found some mopani from fluval I'm eyeballing, new flashlight with colored lenses or that just lasts longer and can be charged via USB, silicone molds to make my own repashy tablets, meds that I should have on hand, but can't find locally, crafting supplies (plastic mesh), fishing line, suction cups, petri dishes, root tabs, things like that. It's easier to trust and get equipment, but moreso just something slightly not for the hobby, but what we use all the time. Sponge I need, super glue I did get, the rest is intended for an order of something that is a species I've never kept, but I can actually order it from the place I want just through Amazon. Still gives you the exercise, but maybe a taller bucket and a dolly to wheel it around.
  17. Definitely fine. The filters also give a really good source of food for them too. You'll likely see them under and around those sponges.
  18. I am impatiently waiting too. I might spend the day with a case of superglue working on my tanks. I have 12 tubes, so hopefully that's "enough" after I pull and cut everything and we'll see how much I have. I have been dumping some into the Panda tank, but it's not attached anywhere. I did clean off some of the anubias, so that needs to be cleaned and reattached as well. Lots of prep work!
  19. I definitely want to keep 25+ of them. We will see how many I have. I would like to get a good series of them in the 75 whenever time and space makes sense. You'd think that's a lot, but definitely can handle 50 I think. I think in terms of fry, there's 15-20. I did count, but can't remember at all what there was. I've lost 2 from that point. 😞 I also found some in the tank, so maybe that makes up for it. I guess I hesitated to trust them! I do see them go around the tank, sometimes they clean, sometimes they don't. The tank in question has a ridiculous BBA/Staghorn algae issue and it's not been fun. The eggs have issues being too close to the light and the algae everywhere, which the amanos refuse to help with some weeks.
  20. Aquarium Adventures has his setup to overflow on the front of the tanks.
  21. Grace the shark!? She's a Red-Tailed Black Shark. 🙂 I believe it! I've had eggs almost the same week / day years apart. I do see a lot of people successful with them constantly, so we'll see. Having a herd again is a nice thing. It was very stressful trying to get eggs from 1 fish in the group. There are shrimp in the tank 🙂 . It's a very interesting procedure. My last batch, my plecos went to town and ate a lot of the spawn. They have since been moved so hopefully that helps things out! I do have 2 specimen containers as well as hang on and internal breeder boxes. Was my first time pulling / raising eggs, so that was a first step in that learning process. Fun, tense, exciting, exhausting, but rewarding. I try to say "corydoras" but when I do get shorthanded I just say "black corys." Right or wrong, eh, I have heard people get upset if you don't type the full word out or say "corydoras catfish" but it's all good. Not that big of a deal for me personally!
  22. First, welcome to the forums. You have two heaters right next to eachother, you'd want to move that fluval one to the right half of the tank if you can or just run one. how exactly is it setup.... that would help so we could make sure your media (biological) isn't causing any issues for you. Tank looks great 🙂
