  1. Yes he’s from a LFS. He was labeled as just a Blue Mystery Snail so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one, they come in all the colors of the rainbow! He’s a tiny guy, I have to search for him in my 29😂
  2. Chili Rasboras are always my top picks for nano tanks - but I also love rocket/clown killis. Tiny enough for a 5g and also top dwelling so you could easily have something else hangin out in the midwater.
  3. I wouldn’t worry too much. I have jungle Val in a 10g right now😂(yes I’m a rebel) and it’s taken months to get going. It still hasn’t gotten that tall or sent out hardly any runners. So I’d give yours a minute and once it starts taking off then you can decide whether you like the look or not 🙂
  4. As much as I would love to say a massive tank, I think the stress of that much water in my house would kill me😂 But if it wasn’t at my house and I just got to see it often and mess around with it, I’d love a 125 packed full of plants and nano fish (cardinals, green kubotais, neon blue eye rainbows, rasboras, etc) Literally a school of 200 chili rasboras would be my favorite thing!! For a centerpiece I think I’d do a pearl Gourami or a couple of Bolivian Rams! If I was to do a different, non-planted monster tank I would LOVE to keep an Oscar! They’re literally like aquatic bulldogs and I love it! I’d probably throw as many plants as I could in easy planters and hope for the best lol My more realistic dream tank is a 7g rimless cube, haha I’m with @clownbaby nano tanks are my jam! I really want to try a dirted tank with a cap and do a ton of crypts. Like, just a solid crypt garden with maybe a few Anubias tucked here and there. And then I’d stock it with chilis and blue dream neo shrimps😍
  5. There’s been some new additions to the 29! First - a honey gourami! YAY! I am 90% sure it is a female. I can’t say I didn’t want a male because of the better colors😂, but hey, I’m happy to have a honey at all! She was in a tank with a ton of mislabeled thick lipped gouramis and the only true honey - so beggars can’t be choosers. She’s shy right now, but I love how she moves around, inspecting things with her little “feelers”, putting it into reverse, etc. Cool little fish that I’m excited to keep! And the next addition - one tiny blue mystery snail😂He’s about the size of my pointer finger nail. Please DON’T look at the algae 👀 but needless to say I think this little guy will have plenty of food to munch on for a while😂
  6. I can only dream of plant growth as amazing as yours! Congrats on two whole years!
  7. Picked up a honey gourami and tiny blue mystery snail to add to the 29g community tank whilst on my way home from a football game. The honey is definitely a female but I’m hoping I’ll still get some nice orange color out of her. Exciting times!
  8. Sorry to bring up an old thread, but this one has been so helpful (as others have mentioned). I took notes from it so that when I went to the LFS I could pick out a honey from a thick lipped, and try my best to get a male. Well, that day finally came! I stopped in at a mom and pop pet store, and lo and behold they had a tank full of gouramis. Tons of thick lipped (which look very much more brown and red) and one single honey gourami. Since bringing home the one gourami, I have come to the conclusion that I believe she is a female. I can’t say I didn’t want a male😂, but hey, she was all they had and I’m just happy to try a honey at all. Judging from the orange tips of the dorsal fin, pointier face and big brown stripe down the middle (I can’t remember if this means they may be wild type, or just a female thing?) Anyways, I’d love input from others to make sure I’m not totally screwing this up. Thanks to @laritheloud for putting this thread together in the first place, long ago!
  9. I used Slime Out on my tank and it worked like a charm in two doses. But on the second time I waited an extra day to do a water change and my nitrites skyrocketed. Thankfully ammonia was fine and fish were fine. In that case, taking things out and scrubbing with a toothbrush might be more effective. I honestly don’t see much cyano in the picture, so the Slime Out definitely did it’s job! Is that a puffer I see?!😍
  10. I just used a siphon to clean up everything. But make sure to do it quick because dead cyano releases ammonia like crazy. You can pull individual things out but it kind of disintegrates and makes a mess.
  11. Not at all - honestly most all of the crypts are super easy. One I will warm you about is the lucens. Mine came emerged and looking big and beautiful. Once it converts, it becomes tiny. It’s also a suuuuuper slow grower. My Wendtii grew twice as fast (hence why it’s my favorite crypt). I’ve heard the same about parva - tiny tiny and takes forever to spread. If that’s what you want then totally try it. Bad picture of an algae covered lucens and gravel in need of a vac😂but you get the idea.
  12. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea knows all about this sort of thing 🙂
  13. Haha, yes I changed my name! I’ve been wanting to change it for a while but couldnt decide what to do. There aren’t any other fish in there right now, so I can’t really say how they’ll do with others. There will be more species in there soon, though😉They didn’t bother the hillstream loach at all, however. The males definitely do chase each other quite often, but never very aggressively. No fin nipping or physical contact. It’s always pretty short lived. They seem to be lazy little blimps😂 So far they’ve eaten everything I’ve thrown in there, they’re not afraid of the tweezers or my hand AT ALL, and they swim all over the tank (but spend most of their time mainly in the bottom half). Hope that helps!
  14. I love cherry barbs. That is all.😂 PS - I’ve already seen a few of them spawn!! They’ve only been in this tank 3 weeks! Maybe in the future I’ll have to try raising up the fry!
  15. I cannot for the life of me figure out why I am cursed with the ability to grow every algae under the sun and not a single plant. My new 29g (yes, it is new, which will mean algae… but I think we have other issues going on) already has BGA or Cyanobacteria. I feel like this is not normal for a new tank. My other 10g recently ish had a major outbreak of BGA as well. Along with that, I’ve got diatom on all of my plant leaves, green hair algae on the glass and the beginnings of BBA on the gravel (just the purpley flat looking stuff so far). My goal is just a simple, low tech tank. I just want to have a jungle!😂 I dose Easy Green once a week after I water change (and manually remove as much algae as I can) so my Nitrates reach 20ppm. I have a Nicrew SkyLED at 30% for 6 and a half hours each day. Inert gravel with root tabs The thing I think might be a sign of the problem is by the end of the week, my nitrates never reach 0. In fact, they barely dip below 20. To me this tells me that my plants are not utilizing the fertilizer, but I don’t know if it’s because they’re not getting enough light/not a long enough light period/too much light etc. I am looking for guidance from someone who knows more about this than me and can help me decide what to do going forward. FTS - it’s a 29 so maybe not enough light is getting to the plants at the bottom? BGA on the sponge filter ^Hygrophila angustifolia getting it’s fair share of algae🙈 BGA starting to creep onto the gravel Thank you for any thoughts
  16. Your tanks are beautiful! Sorry about your loss of the cute ember tetras, but glad everyone else made the journey well. Your 20g still looks incredible! I’m envious of your Val and crypts😍and what a cute Bolivian Ram! I can’t wait to keep one of those someday, too! Keep us updated on how things go with him!
  17. Has anyone else had an issue uploading a profile picture? Whenever I try to select one from my camera roll (iPhone) it always says it was larger than max file size and skipped. I also don’t know how to make the file size smaller which is probably what I need to do.😂
  18. I love my cherry barbs. They’re quite peaceful as long as you get a good size group of them (8 or more) so they can spread their aggression out amongst themselves. But I still would add more harlequins. You’ll see more interesting behavior with a bigger group!
  19. I second Cherry Barbs. The males get super fiery red (not so much the females) and are very entertaining to watch. They’re all over the tank. Has he considered Cardinal Tetras? I’ve heard they’re shy but they’re basically a beefier (and sometimes hardier) version of a Neon Tetra. Lots of color in a small package.
  20. Thanks @Whitecloud09! A honey gourami is the plan 😉 Yes, no visual issues with the little hillstream. I wonder if they’re already a sensitive enough species that going from his origin to the store to my tank was just too much. Still so sad! Thanks! It’s getting there. Hoping I can get everything dialed in so the plants can really take off.
  21. You’ve got lots of options - there’s so many tetra spiecies as well as barbs, Rasboras, killis, rainbow fish, livebearers, etc. lots to decide from and play with 🙂
  22. Looks pretty darn close to 0 to me. You mentioned you liked Harlequin Rasboras? I’ve heard those are pretty bulletproof. I think Pandas are supposedly pretty easy too, you just got stuck with a sick batch I think 😞 Maybe you should try something locally. All the fish I’ve gotten from my LFS have done really well. Even if it’s a PetSmart, if they look healthy you might be better off. I’d probably wait until you get back to buy fish. I’d rather be home to monitor them for the first full week or so before heading out. But totally up to you, if you think you’ll be good then go for it! Probably wouldn’t start with those if I were you. Unless you have a really good source (like Dans Fish) I think they’d do better in a more established setup because they’re so tiny and a bit fragile.
  23. Probably a 40 breeder or 55 (or heck, why not a 75!) community tank super heavily planted with community fish, gallons of Cory’s on the bottom and Pearl Gouramis or an Angel for centerpiece. I would also love to keep an Oscar😍 And my slightly more possible bucket list tank is a 7g rimless cube (or rimless long tank - the bookshelf style is so cool!) for chili rasboras and blue neo shrimp. I’d really like to try a dirted tank and make it a crypt garden.
  24. I lost my hillstream loach today 😞 Still trying to figure out what the cause was. Any ideas would be appreciated because I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again. He/she was acting normal the whole 2 1/2 weeks in my care until this morning - swimming around, munching on the diatom algae on the glass, colored up pretty darkly. I’ve been checking water parameters every day. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and about 10-20 nitrate the whole time. Tank is stable at 77F. The cherry barbs in the same tank are doing wonderfully. The only thing I can think of is I scraped the algae off the glass on the front and the back, but I purposely left the sides untouched so the loach could munch. Did he/she starve? I haven’t bought Repashy or any sinking wafers yet. This morning it was down on the gravel and had totally changed colors and was super pale. I read that they change colors sometimes to blend in with their surroundings or bc of stress. I do have light substrate so it makes sense. But the poor little thing was gone😢
  25. Algae💩mainly stupid cyano! Also test kits not matching up - aka nitrate on a test strip showing 20 and 40 on a liquid test kit. Drives me nuts bc I don’t know which to trust! Wanting bigger tanks… but also wanting smaller tanks… but they have to be rimless and low iron because it’s fAnCiEr🤓
