  1. I always worry whether or not Flint (pleco) is getting enough to eat, but one day I found him in the food dish when the light clicked on. And this morning I found “evidence”. So he’s feeding at night. During the day he eats catappa leaf, banana leaf, and wood. Also there is Button eating some of the zucchini.
  2. First, I am so sorry for your losses. As others have suggested, my gut tells me chlorine. You can’t predict what the water companies will do to the water. One day the water supply may have no chlorine, and the next day chlorine and/or chloramines may be present. Most dechlorinators will remove heavy metals as well for the safety of the fish. As @Galabar and @Tlindsey have mentioned, chlorine will kill your beneficial bacteria as well and can lead to “new tank syndrome” (unstable parameters ie: ammonia spikes).
  3. I tried paper on the walls but my betta could still see it because the glare occurred on the inside. I relocated the tank and added more plants.
  4. Everybody does! I gave the embers grindals. I “recorded it” but then afterwards realized I wasn’t actually recording… 🙄 And Geppetto got grindals too 🙂
  5. Mine don’t eat it, they clean off what’s on it. I’m always fine tuning my shrimp tank light to control it, or it tries to take over. I think I heard a comment on that in a video as well, how (neo) shrimp look like they’re eating it but they just want the biofilm, etc from its surface. But the type of hair algae in my shrimp tank (looks like hair) and is different than the fluffier hair algae in my jar. When I swirl the toothbrush in the jar and then remove it, it looks like slime (mucous consistency) is hanging off the bristles. Gross, but accurate, reference. The stuff that comes out of the shrimp tank is like a clump of hair and you can tear it apart with similar force and effect as tearing a cotton ball. Jar algae from a few weeks ago when it was worse. I manually removed some. It came back. See, it looks hair-algae-ish but vs the shrimp tank, just “different”. Shrimp tank: I will look for that video. It sounds like a fun watch!
  6. If ammonia is a concern you can put a drop of Prime into the bag water with a pipette. I think even a 15 minute float is better than none. I don’t think it’s necessary to introduce more stress (temp difference) to the fish if you don’t have to. The more stress, the more likelihood for disease. I’ve seen a video by Rachel O’Leary where she plop & dropped fish from a shipment because the shipment had been massively delayed. But that was a special situation. Some of the fish were fine. Many were not. But there was a lot of stress from shipping and other variables, not just temp changes. I agree with @Galabar.
  7. The last 2 days I haven’t detected any ammonia. I think the last test that was questionable was a fluke. The embers are doing very well and like to hang out under the leaves like they are umbrellas. However the void space is getting on my nerves and my inner voice is saying “something needs to be there!” Probably will add more anubias to keep the theme. Here are the embers enjoying some Repashy. I really like these little guys. If you recall, they come from Aquashella. 🙂
  8. It is the next morning, and as you can see the water is nice and clear. (There is glare, so I don’t know how well you can tell). The particles became heavier and settled. I plan to do an additional tea bag because there are not enough tannins yet, to my liking. Heres what the trumpet snails are helping me out with in my jar. It is a fluffy hair algae. I could reduce light, but let’s see what they can accomplish first.
  9. The Malaysian trumpet snail population has been ramping up in Geppetto’s tank. Not an issue. What could be a potential issue though, is that they are feeding from the surface. My guy has been careful about eating his food and not the snails (which are the same size as his pellets), but I do worry that he might eat one by mistake and have a blockage. As well as his need to breathe from the surface. I want that to be easy for him. Here are some photos of the surface feeding snails: So folks, my lifelong dream of having a gravel made of MTS will not come to fruition after all. Hence, I removed the snails from the tank and siphoned the substrate, which was loaded with decayed catappa, which the MTS love. All (known) MTS were moved to my Walstad jar, which is currently having a bit of an algae problem. So, win win for all involved. The siphoning was so messy with the broken down catappa, so I used a paste/powder type clarifier product suggested by @Guppysnail along with a 10g HOB and floss. Just for fun I took photos every 15 minutes. Then I took the HOB off after an hour since Geppetto doesn’t like current. I added a rooibos organic tea bag to the tank to bring tannins back in, as well as an SMALL piece of catappa leaf for the shrimps. When they eat that, they can have another one, but I want to control the organics in the tank right now. The tank should be clear by morning. Also here are some juvenile shrimps that were born in the tank. Geppetto doesn’t pay any attention to the shrimp anymore. And then a bonus pic (from the other tank) of Cadet going to town on some broccoli.
  10. Hooray! Congratulations! Check out my mystery snail journal link below if you want to see the procedure I followed for raising them. Baby snails will first go after biofilm, so a powdery food such as fry food, powdered (not prepared) Repashy, or bacter ae will be a great start for them. However, water quality is key, so I would test every day to ensure success. As they grow their bioload can throw off parameters. Note: the first food I used was hard boiled egg yolk. I would not use that again because it was way too messy and fouls the water quickly.
  11. No, I’m not sure. It’s brand new and my first time having one. (It says on the packet they are only good for one year. This one is just a few weeks old.) yeah maybe so, couldn’t hurt. I do have the s10 I can throw on there as well; it’s not in use. Not sure if that would be helpful or if I should just make a purchase of a secondary hob, or two matching hobs.
  12. Just doing the twice-a-week water tests and the display tank was showing, or so I thought, “a tinge of green” I guess. But could I be certain? No. So I did another liquid test and went outside to read it and was still on the fence. So I did a 50% water change with Prime and Fritz Zyme 7 and added this Seachem card. 7 hours later this is the card. There is no explanation other than the pleco is new and he poops a lot. But I have been removing that daily with the baster. So.. ??? No signs of stress, so I think maybe things are fine? Here is Snoopy just cruisin around, the tetras are schooling and doing their thing, and so are the snails. Except the nerites who don’t like water changes in general and either burrow or exit the water. They were fine before I changed it. Also did I share my Christmas presents with you? Here are some pens I got. They write really nice! Black gel! Very smooth. And also I got some correction tapes: All of these things came from my hobbyist friend who had adopted some of my snails when I bred them. 🙂 Oh also another friend gave me snail soap dispensers where you push down the shell and the snail spits out the soap. I haven’t set them up yet, but it should be fun when I do. Hehe
  13. Ok so we will be here waiting patiently for photos. 🙂 Oh, I thought you meant you were the shipper (of neos)
  14. Flint is making my tank look good. He gets plenty of veggies and kelp/spirulina/BSFL foods but he has assumed the role of tidying up this piece of spiderwood. Flint’s section: Other section: See how his one fin doesn’t lay flat? I wonder if he has an old injury or something. It apparently doesn’t bother him though.
  15. What does this mean? I understand the concept, but how quickly did it work, and did it work well in your opinion? Did you keep some? 🙂 Yay! And the barbs were from the other post, right? The hobbyist that had to move or something and is giving away their setups?
  16. Oh how fun to see the progress! Kelp forest, here we come! 😍 Alas! There is still hope! Loooooooool Hooray! Is this microsword? ..oh 🙃 Omg, so like- how is everyone doing now? How did the Clarity work? Did it work fairly quickly? I’ve been busy and having trouble keeping up with journals, but trying. What I gleaned is that Seachem Fluorite caused the BBA issue, so it had to go, yes?
