I have vaguely heard of EBAs breeding with Apistogramma, but this seems like totally new behaviour. Keep us posted about wether the potential fry are viable!

If I find that the hybrid is viable and quite beautiful, I may give some away to some friends; but if it’s the weakest thing since wet tissues, I’ll keep it or cull it

I used to have a seasoned 5 gallon with some Java moss, Indian Swamp weed, and that Brazilian plant with fine leaves and which propagates very fast. (I just can’t remember plant names - sorry!)

I’ll tag @Zenzo because he seems to know a lot about these fish. Any recommendations for species, tank size and plants??

First: Beautiful Aquarium!!! Check out my fish pic competition thread if you have any other great pics like that. Secondly, maybe if you catch a spider, (assuming you're not also petrified of them) and rig up a branch-like structure for it to hold onto... This could also work with crickets and such. I have heard that headstanders are breedable (is that a word?) but must be fed very well and have no tank mates in a minimum 450 liter tank. My Swiss equivalent of @Dean’s Fishroom keeps them and has only aver had 1 successful spawn. I'll try and ask him tomorrow. pH is certainly in the 5.5-6.5 range, and soft water is probably the norm. (I've tagged Deans fish room in the hope that he has bred them. I'll tag @Guppysnail to 'cos he seems to breed everything short of lions 🙃)

For those who have read my journal, they might know that I have been trying (and failing) to breed my favourite fish on the planet = Apisto Agassizii 'Fire Red'. Having had around 10 spawns over the last 2 months or so, I have decided to free myself of my apparently sterile male. I have been toying with the idea to interbreed Apistos for quite a while. So I'll either attempt a Cacatuoides x Agassizii cross, or I'll cross Fire Red with some other colour morph from the A. Agassizii genetic group. Any thoughts? Please note that I will not sell the potential offspring of the Cacatuoides x Agassizii crossing.

Always feed well, because that may save a couple of fry from Mum and Dad needing a Sunday roast;). By the way thanks @WhitecloudDynasty, your post on the Best fish pic competition thread has really gotten me into breeding them! I thought I might try Gold x Long fin. Any thoughts on that?

Never take anything for granted: your Apistos may have spawned, but that might all fungus tomorrow. Murphys Law: What will go wrong shall go wrong.

It may have been forced to jump out by a predatory fish??? Other than that your Amano could have suicidal instincts.

I have seen in parts of Eastern Europe fish are bred after hormonal treatment (injections??) such as Siamese Algae Eaters and Redtail Sharks, but I have found that these offspring aren't as fit and healthy as their wild-caught parents.

I don't know why, but it seems I have the same problem as @KittenFishMom , whenever I see a super cool fish (last time it was least killifish) I msut buy them and find a place for them. Those killis lasted about a year until I added a betta to their tank.🤦‍♂️
