  1. Does anyone know if having a high nitrate issue [80-160 ppm out of the tap] (our well is basically poisoned from farm runoff - we are in process of buying a whole house filter - the purchase was delayed by our well pump going out) interferes with or consumes potassium? Because my Java fern is just pitted with black holes. I have powdered potassium that was given to me by a saltwater fish keeper when I bought something else from him. If it would help to add it any guidance on how to dose it?
  2. That's good to hear. That's how I organize my plugins too. I kind of trust the source (Dell), more than the pet industry. I wonder if their $25k guarentee would apply to our aquarium equipment 😄.
  3. When I'm working with my tanks it's my time to disconnect with my "digicals and Google machines" (terms courtesy of YT'r Vice-Grip Garage lol). I get the convenience of the Smart tools, but I don't want everything hooked up to something where I need to use an app on my phone. I like the simplicity of a switch and not the interruption of focusing on my phone. It takes me out of my zen mode. 🙂
  4. Gotchya. I have my power strips mounted up high (vs on the floor). I'm a moderate user of tech. I don't have all the gadgets lol. In my situation this manual button pushing is favourable.
  5. I've been looking at different power strips and this is what I've found to have the best outlet spacing. Finding surge suppressors with individual switches has been a challenge. This is great for switching off power heads/wave makers during feedings or cleaning, heaters, etc. For the price this gives the most outlets and most space between the outlets that I've been able to find. If you know of a better product please post a link! https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/tripp-lite-eco-surge-7-outlet-surge-protector-6-ft-black/apd/aa118265/power-cooling-data-center-infrastructure?ref=p13n_ena_pdp_vv&c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
  6. I saw someone using a suction cup shower basket - intended for holding soap and what have you in a shower - to quiet the flow of a HOB filter. But I was thinking you could find one with the proper holes or add holes to it for holding stem plants, cuttings or even pothos roots. Next times I go to Menards I'm going to see that section in a whole new light! lol! Just have to watch for metal.
  7. I like this idea! Snails - how do you cope with them in the worker pool. I'm not anti snail, but in that environment they could go crazy. And what filtration do you use? The nano filters couldn't keep up with that waste machine. I'm imagining a large kiddie pool or stock tank I guess would do it. Kiddie Pool might make catching easier because of the color. You'd really have to watch for disease though. Because if you're moving those from tank to tank you could spread disease - UNLESS you have a post work quarantine tank. Now do you observe or medicate? And if you're going to piece clean items (love this idea) would you have a "service tank" where you put the item and the specialized crew so you don't contaminate the cleaning crew pond with whatever you want cleaned off? Which would also allow you to do a dark tank without light so that you could help kill off the algae with lack of light or add easy carbon. Hmmm Things to think on....
  8. Lol I keep hoping I'll get some new bloodlines for my ramshorn snail population but I never get any snails with my AC plants! Go figure! lol!
  9. I want to be able to attach to the style that I have about a dozen of 🤣. But it's good to see that the concept has been applied. I dig the look of this style of filter tho.
  10. This idea has been cooking in my head for quite awhile. I'm surprised it's not already out there. But if it was I'd think Cory would have told us about it and have his own version in development 😉🤣🤣
  11. This is one I have contemplated contacting @Cory about - and asking could this be achieved? Could a fillable box "filter" be ADDED/LINKED/STACKED to a sponge filter for those occasions when you need to use a product that you would normally put in a HOB or canister or box filter? I'm thinking for those occasions where you want to polish your water or use a bagged product for water treatment, etc... I drew this sketch of my idea (don't judge lol!). I wrote that the water exits out the tube, but it could also exit out small openings in the FMB like box filters do. If this exists already somebody tell me!
  12. Red nets are supposed to be less visible. I have a woven net made from natural materials that I'm going to try. See if that's less threatening some how. Being relaxed at the moment seems to matter most when I'm catching fish.
  13. Thanks @Bill sounds like I need to add a heater into the mix. I had my suspicions about that. I just wanna be done with all this other stuff so I can play with my toys. Tanks. Not toys. Tanks.😉
  14. My tanks aren't ready to go yet. I'm resealing one and rearranging rooms to make room for a 6ft tank. I have only one room that has floors and water access to put something of that weight and size in. So I just want to get a jump on the bacteria building while I'm doing the other stuff. One of those things where you fo little bits of the project in between adulting 😁😁😁
  15. I have 3 large sponge filters (not as big as Cory's 😂) that I would like to pre-seed. But I don't have an aquarium open that doesn't have snails in them. And I want to put different kinds of snails in the new tanks. My plan is to use aquarium water in a 5 gallon bucket and run the sponges. I'm assuming I would need to add something more to build the bacteria biome. I would prefer not to heat it. Unheated in the basement is about 68 degrees. I can't take any media from my other tanks because of the snails/eggs. Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks!
  16. Thank you I just scraped out those corners tonight. I wonder after reading your comment if I won't have the same issue. Water is happy to flow on the path of last resistance. I'm actually beginning to rethink redoing this particular aquarium. I've got it nearly ready to reseal. I might finish the job proper just to get practice and then use it as an outdoor tank in the summer for green water or growing plants or something.
  17. If only there was spare room. I'm going to have to let go of some old passions I think. But you can't grow if you hold on to the past. And I'd rather have the fish.
  18. Interesting. Never heard of that before. Thank you. I have well water and I use a Python to fill my tank. My water isn't usually that bubbly. I did use a higher rate of flow and I have added an aerator on to the faucet that has an external thread that allows me to attach my Python straight to the faucet without having to change it out. Maybe I have to go back to a reduced flow. I find it easier to match temps at a higher water volume. Thank you for the information and response. 😊
  19. Nice setups! When I have a spare brain cell I'm going to try the Walstad method with a tank I have going downstairs. I'm working on resealing a 55 gallon tank and rearranging my house to get a 125 in my new fish room. I mean foyer. Yes foyer, thats what I meant 😂
  20. Is your hypothesis that the fish originally got sick from being in a psychologically crowded spaces after having been in a larger space? I wonder that if you had instead culled some fish (or obtained more IBC's) if it would have turned out better for you - even though the "math" was right. Because you look at those giant farming operations it seems like they sometimes have more fish than water! But these fish came from free swimming space. In your summary you mention plastics and glues - but no mention of it in your write-up. Is that something you came across in your readings? Or something you suspected was an issue amongst issues? Also you mention pregnant women - whenever you put your hands or arms in a fish tank you should wash immediately afterwords with soap and hot water. There are some horrible sicknesses humans can contract. I recall a story of one woman getting an almost flesh eating like disease. And while rare I think its a simple thing to do (washing up) to prevent a horrible situation that could dramatically alter your life. Are you rebuilding your colony and have you decided on how much stock you will maintain?
  21. If it looks like little grains of salt it's most likely ick. Is he or have you recently brought in new fish? If so did you quarantine before adding to your main tank?
