  1. I can't afford a high end system and I can't get bottled gas here. DIY is my only option. I even checked both hardware stores and after the paintball craze was over neither of them get paintball sized cylinders.
  2. Looking for tips on using the diy Co2 Citric acid/Baking Soda system.
  3. I will be adding Flourite Red to my substrate. Should I mix it with my soil or use it as a layer?
  4. I wish I had known this several years ago when most of my plants showed up in poor shape. I'm going to be making an order soon but I just wish they would do Express Mail. I'd be willing to pay more for shipping to ensure that I receive them in the best possible condition. Especially living on an island with no LFS.
  5. Referring to the setup explained by Father Fish. He has tanks that have been running for over ten years 😳. For my 29 gallon, if I go that route I'll do two inches of soil, with some amendments and cap it with three inches of sand.
  6. I recently found out about the "deep substrate" method. From what I've seen it looks interesting. Has anyone here tried it? What are your results?
  7. No idea. Found it on a beach probably about 4 years ago.
  8. Lol, tried that this afternoon. Couldn't drill through it. If worse comes to worse I may have to try to masonry bit.
  9. Looking for ideas for keeping wood submerged. I've been soaking this for about two weeks and it's still not waterlogged. The last time I tried using it in my present 20 high I soaked it for a couple of months and it still floated. I'm wanting to attach Anubias Nana Petite to make it look like a deciduous tree.
  10. I'll be featuring this in my new 29 gallon tank. It's about 10x7x2.5. I'm thinking of putting Anubias Nana Petite on the top.
  11. Is there a Betta subspecies that is known to be more peaceful than others?
  12. The SeaChem Tidal 55 has controllable flow. I can slow it down and use it more as a surface skimmer.
  13. Is over filtration possible? Until recently I didn't like the idea of sponge filters however I've changed my mind about this after watching filtration videos and several reviews of the Aquarium Co-op sponge filters. I will be setting up a new 29 gallon acrylic show tank with dirted substrate within a few weeks. I plan on running two Aquarium Co-op medium sponge filters, one in each back corner along with a SeaChem Tidal 55 HOB and a Cobalt Aquatics EXT 26000 canister filter.
  14. I love my Cobalt Aquatics 26000. I currently have one on my 20 high and I have a brand new one for my new 29 gallon acrylic show tank. It can be configured with the intake inside the tank or outside. With either configuration the intake/discharge unit is removable without actually having to turn off the pump. This leaves it circulating water while you remove the canister for cleaning. When you reattach the intake/discharge and lock it into place it switches the internal valve and resumes routing the water through the filter media without having to prime it. Plus it's self priming so in the event of a power outage it will prime itself without having to do anything to it.
  15. Thank you. Co2 is almost out of the question unless I do the soda bottle method as ALL bottled gasses have to come from Ketchikan, 90 miles away on a different island. I will be doing a dirted substrate using organic planting soil, Eco-Complete, fine gravel and coarse sand. Looks like it will definitely be low tech. I just looked up my light, a Nicrew Classic LED Plus and it's only 21 watts and I will be using it on a 29 gallon acrylic tank.
  16. I would like to grow some red plants, specifically Scarlet Temple. From what I understand this requires iron. What is the best way to add iron to the substrate so that it's bio available?
  17. My pH test strip (tap water)says 6.4. Hopefully my API Master Test Kit will be arriving soon so I can get a more accurate reading.
  18. Is it preferable to add peat moss as a layer or mix it with the soil?
  19. Would there be a problem with putting a Beta in with my Angelfish?
  20. I'm doing lasagna. Organic potting soil, Eco-Complete, fine gravel topped with coarse sand.
  21. It's not up and running yet. I'm just trying to gather information to help make sure it's successful. I have a 20 high and I'm going to run both (HOB and canister filters) on it for a week or so before startup to seed them. I have a 10 gallon to use as a quarantine tank. Due to logistics (I live on an island with no brick and mortar pet store, the lady runs it out of her home and only makes a couple of orders a year).
