Maybe some a colorful betta would be a good choice, although it could prey on your snail and shrimp... Another option would be a small school of Rainbowfish.

New Fish of the Week 11/22-11/28 - Breeding Project Challenge
Dwayne Brown replied to Fish Folk's topic in Fish Breeding
Anyone know what size of tank they need? Could a pair be kept in a 5 gallon? -
This book was the start of my aquarium hobby and propelled me to try my hand at fishkeeping. It's really an excellent book although it is kind of old and doesn't have "all the new" fish it's still pretty cool. Book Link

Um does your city use chlorine treatments? I don't believe that drain flies can come from a tap but it is certainly possible. I would grab an aquarium water tester and see if it reads any chlorine in water straight out of your tap. Your fish should be fine but this could be a health hazard. Most time drain flies come from "drains" because the are stagnant and full of sludge. I can't see tap water having this, is your tap water clear? Does it smell off?

@RonBFree I mean they can. I know someone who added some Guppies to a tank of clown loaches and they ate 4 of them in front of us... I think it might be both the clown loaches and roseline sharks, they both are opportunistic feeders. The loaches might begin the "hunt" but the Roseline's probably play a part in it as well.

Um i'm not 100% sure but if you found no bodies perhaps there were eaten by other fish in the aquarium. How big were the platy's and swordtails when you added them to your tank?

Can you confirm I was sold 2 female honey gourami please?
Dwayne Brown replied to Karen B.'s topic in General Discussion
I will second @Gator Honey gourami's are pretty calm and laid back as far as anabantoid's go. However like all fish some individuals can be more aggressive so you might want to prepare for that possibility. -
Cold water algae/detritus eaters
Dwayne Brown replied to GardenStateGoldfish's topic in General Discussion
Beautiful tanks 🙂 You might want to look into Dojo loaches. I have always wanted some (but space doesn't allow for it) from what I remember they are pretty cold water hardy so they might be the perfect match for your larger goldfish tank. -
No you dont have to thank them. But it is common practice to use the "like" or "thank" button to thank each person instead of referencing them individually. If you put your courser over this grey heart. This Should come up and you can pick which expression. The like is the blue heart and the thank is the purple trophy

You could try online auction type sites, your local aquarium club, LFS's, Facebook pages about aquarium fishkeeping sometimes have swaps. If you live near a major city you could see if they have a aquarist society, a lot of times these societies will host auctions and swaps.

Painting the outsides is just fine. You might want to use something like spray paint or acrylics, I just find them easier to paint glass with.

I'm no expert but you could try running a few different sumps based on water condition. Maybe one for cold water, one for hot, one for rare tropical...

I'm not trying to be "that guy" but I think that the forum says that no selling or giving away aquarium equipment or livestock can occur. I'm not sure if trading is in that realm but just wanted to let you know.

Spare 10 gallon breeding setup again
Dwayne Brown replied to Taco Playz's topic in General Discussion
@Taco Playz kribs would be to big for a 10 gallon. I'm not sure the exact tank size but I think most recommend at least a 29 for breeding kribs. You could try white cloud mountain minnows if you want egg scattering. -

Spare 10 gallon breeding setup again

From what I have read. It appears ricefish are the easiest egg spawners to breed. They don't need a lot of space, the fry are easy to rear, and the parents don't devour their offspring. The only issue is finding them for sale, which I am still attempting... -
Might be a killifish, or ricefish of some sort.

Natural Population Control
Dwayne Brown replied to Beardedbillygoat1975's topic in General Discussion
My bolivian ram keeps my endler livebearer population down considerably. But if your having a large population control issue I would stick with a predatory fish like killifish. The Golden wonder is pretty hardy and predatory, but I have heard it wont eat anything larger that 2 inches. One thing to keep in mind is that killifish are incredibly hard to find. The golden wonder is at most lfs and chain stores, but the other varieties are really rare. You might have luck buying eggs online and hatching them. -
What would be a few things you would tell new fish keepers
Dwayne Brown replied to Brandon p's topic in General Discussion
1. Don't get a fish that is incredibly hard to keep. 2. Don't get a fish that is the "best beginner" fish if you don't want it. 3. Get fish that you will enjoy taking care of, can take care of. And are relatively hardy 4. Don't start off buying the best of everything. If your just starting out you probably don't need state of art lighting. 5. Invest most in healthy livestock and quality food. -
Substrate for apistogramma cacatoides
Dwayne Brown replied to Stephen Zawacki's topic in General Discussion
I agree with everyone above most south american cichlids prefer sand and fine substrate. As far as substrate removal goes... You are going to scratch the tank no matter what you do, I find that its easier to just scoop out the substrate with my hand or a clean small garden shovel. Just try to keep the scratching to the bottom of the tank and it should look fine. You could try placing cardstock or cardboard against the aide glass panels. This would stop you from scratching the panels then you could just rinse off whatever is lefty on the side. -
Breeding Endlers & Guppies in My Soft Water
Dwayne Brown replied to eddie462's topic in Fish Breeding
I live in an area with very soft water and my endlers breed like crazy. I think they will breed rapidly in almost any environment, You should be fine. -
It looks like dwarf gourami disease (sorry I don't know the technical term off the top of my head). I don't think there is any treatment for it other than trying to boost the immune system by reducing environmental stressors. Like water quality.

Starting a new Planted Aquarium
Dwayne Brown replied to Sharlotte Adams's topic in General Discussion
My tank is incredibly low tech and has a sand substrate. I'm not sure if you could call it heavily planted but it does have plants. It used to be almost like a jungle but I cut a lot of the plants back. I have some java fern on the log to the right. Some discount stem plant in the front. An anubius in the front as well. And my favorite pogostemon octopus. I started out with a 3 inch tall specimen and all the plants in the back are what is has grown to be. They are super easy to care for and probably the most low maintenance plant. They also grow like a weed, what you see now is actually about 1/4 of the total pogostemon I had before I pruned them. Something else to try would be water lettuce. i have some in the upper right corner. Every two weeks they end up covering the surface of my tank so I have to get rid of them. But super low maintenance. Hope this helps.
