  1. No they are not inefficient. They can easily go down to -15 degrees. These are heatpumps but they are inverter heatpumps. People in Canada and Alaska heat there whole out with just minisplits
  2. No. A heater should never ever produce CO (carbon monoxide) . But a properly functioning one will produce huge amounts of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and water vapor. Also a large amount of PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide which is bad. Im not saying it can't be done but there is a safe way of doing it. You will need a source of fresh air ton replenish all that used up oxygen. The longer things typically run the better and more efficient they get up to a point. Smaller would be better but I do agree that in your situation oversized is a good idea. But I caution that 30k BTUs is probably grossly oversized. Is this a long term commitment? If so it might be worth it to just do a minisplit.
  3. My both air pumps are tetra pumps and both over a year old. Don't quote me on that but I'm guessing on that, I would say less then 2 for sure. I have thought that it might be an oil but notice the film looks like its creeping in from the water, not from the air. I run them 24/7 unless I turn them off and that really never happens.
  4. The manufacturer doesn't know anything about what size unit you need. 10k BTUs in a 250sqft basement area is INSANE. My whole 700 sqft basement is 9k BTU and its uninsulated. There is a lot that goes into load calculations. I got books on this stuff that 4" thick. Propane doesnt burn clean at all. It burns clean as in there is less soot but its still very dirty. The reason everyone thinks it burns clean is that the gas industry and blocked a lot of studies and publications. That is slowly changing. A CO detector is barely adequate. Unless you paid about $100+ for it then it wont be of much use. They barely prevent you from living. They DO NOT protect you from being poisoned. I have used ventless gas logs before I have ripped them out in place of direct vent gas logs.
  5. I have had this happen several times, maybe 3 or 4. The felt gets clogged.. I replaced these today and even though they don't need it they are going to soon. IDK how it clogs but it looks like some sort of film/slime is coming in where the air doesn't pass through but eventually it stops it. I have heard fo this from 1 other person. I do like the air stones though.
  6. Yea... um... this is a good way to die.... easily.. 30k btus is WAY too much. How much of your basement walls are above ground? 10k btu would still probably be too big.. Also vent is VERY VERY dangerous to your health. Hopefully ventless will be comepletely outlawed nationwide. Some areas are already moving in that direction. In time you will likely notice unusual fish deaths. That water is just going to absorb all those toxins. Either go electric or get a minisplit.
  7. Nope. That's pretty normal for a house. That is why ERVs and HRVs exist. Also a bunch of homes have that outdoor air intake on the HVAC unit... its dumb but works. It's just VERY inefficient.
  8. I ordered on Saturday at noon and go my shipment Monday at noon. I'm in Va.... no clue how that happened.
  9. That's very interesting. I wasn't sure about the ppm of gases in an aquarium. I never looked into because I have never ran CO2. Another reason is that CO2 levels can fluctuate based on indoor air quality. Indoor concentrations of CO2 are likely off the charts for most homes. I have only done a small amount of air sealing in my house and I already need mechanical ventilation. If i don't keep a window or 2 cracked my CO2 goes up pasted 2000ppm. That high enough to dissolve minerals from bones and well past the 1000ppm where it starts to affect your thinking processes. I have attached a pic of my air quality monitor. You can see how high my co2 is and that is from a room where the window was open 3".
  10. Well for one its a medical device. 2. why would you need to do it? If you have an air stone the tank will have "enough" oxygen. As a side not have you ever had an indoor air quality test done?
  11. That's crazy. But if it's healthy alkaline water then I would drink it. It has numerous health benefits as long as it doesn't contain contaminates.
  12. Everything. Why are you using RO water? That has to be crazy expensive. You probably could have bought several RO units by now.
  13. I have only done acclimation for saltwater fish and shrimp. Everything else is just tossed in the tank and I've never had an issue that I know for certain was caused by that. I have had virtually all problems come from disease or stress IMO. I have only ever lost a fish if I've put them in a brand new tank except for my guppy incident. They were breeding and everything was fine for a long time and then they just started dying. Not clue why. Even with 0 ammonia issues there seems to be untestable factors at play. Whether this is attributed to how we think about ammonia/nitrite or something else. I just started to quarantine fish and the differences are stunning. So far 0 fish loss and the differences in look and temperament are decent. They seem to be much more active and overall healthy. Overall if you just dumping fish in then the only time I would be slight concerned is that if it was an expensive fish or the water differences were a lot and it was known to be a sensitive fish.
  14. Can I put them with Otocinclus? Idk why but I love that classic glass huger. Do any of them actually eat off the glass? Also that pic was a week ago... look at the crazy plant growth... atleast for me. No Co2.
  15. Thanks for saying that. I didn't scape it though, the wife did and thats the 1st time she ever done it. Took her about 5 seconds. Literally! I will look into the other fish you listed. My quarantine tank just got done cycling today so I'm good to go.
  16. I never thought I would come to the point of asking this question but here I am.. I have. A 40 breeder tank that's been setup for 2-3 months now. I added plants last week and am dosing easy green. The tank is not cycled which is fine. I'm going to transfer one of the sponges from the quarantine tank to the 40 whenever I bring the fish over. That leads to my next question.... what can I stock in it? I feel crazy asking this question because I have kept tanks for pretty much my whole life. But this time the tank is in the living room and is a centerpiece so I feel more inclined to pick stuff that attracts. For my schooling fish I have thought about guppies, ember tetras or cardinal tetras but if there's others that i should look at let me know. As for the amount I was thinking like 30-50? I'm not sure about other fish but for the bottom dwellers I would like to have a bristles nose and some corys of some kind. After the tank get good and established I also thought of the idea of introducing a shrimp and or snails also. I have done all this I'm saltwater before but never freshwater. I fact I find saltwater to be somewhat easier to pick what I want.
  17. How are you planning to hold this water? There is nothing wrong with plumbing it you just need a pump with enough head pressure to get it where you need it. There are pumps that have really good output that can sit outside the tank and be plumbed in. Be creative, there is no science to plumbing, its just art. just remember Hot is on left, cold on right, poop runs down hill, pay day is Thursday and the boss man is a son of a ...
  18. This is why I don't want to run a softener. The issues they cause is more of a problem then the benefits. This is especially true for residential.. In commercial places then a water softener is probably a huge money saver. Either get a plumber or yourself to put in a Tee and a garden hose bib before the softener.
  19. You could do 20 and then does the amount of nitrifying bacteria to take care of it. You could also just do water changes to keep ammonia low. Also does enough declorinator to keep ammonia low. Also remember that there in a conversion calc to determine how much dangerous ammonia is in a tank. What are you going to do with 20 10" fish in a 75 though?
  20. Probably not. Deionized water isnt safe or useful unless you are missing in salt for marine tanks. I ran RODI and its the only way to do saltwater. I am thinking about running a sediment filter for the whole house but doing carbon blocks for aquarium water. I think it might be counter productive though. My water is semi hard AFAIK.
