  1. Currently have a 40 breeder with a stock list of: 2 Medium sized Angels 2 baby Polypterus (don't start hating please only in there till my 210 gallon is done being scaped) 2 Kribensis 2 SAE's and a multitude of rams horn snails Plant stocking: pogostemon Helferi Pogostemon Stellatus octopus star grass misc crypt species buce skeleton king anubias gold coin Pogostemon Decanseis bacopa caroliniana/monnerie Valisenaria Leopard and ludwigia palustrus and my tank stats are: PH: 8.2 temp: 79 Lighting: 2 fluval 3.0's at a photo period of 9 hours that ramp up to 85% then back down. Nitrates: 40 to 80 (out of the tap it comes out at 20ppm) Nitrites: 0 Ammonia: 0 With that out of the way I need some help problem solving. My tank is about 1 year old now granted the tank is only going to be up a few more months because it will be used as a sump for the 210 gallon I am setting up. That being said though I am lost to what is bringing on the Brown Diatom algae that is accumulating on the plants making them sad. I also have BBA but that has been slowly going away due to the SAE's. The snails have been going after the algae but not to an extent that eradicates it off the plants. My plan is to transfer the plants to the 210 so I want to get this under control before the transfer. What are some thoughts to help balance things out, I think it has something to do with Nitrate levels but not really sure how to handle that without R/O system which simply isn't in the cards.
  2. So my next question is do I buy another 48inch fluval 3.0 and save for the co2 system or do I buy full CO2 system and save for another light? I currently have a 210 gallon that is my elite show tank for my partial planted Lake tang tank and I have 1 fluval 3.0 already.
  3. Hunting for an overall good CO2 regulator, which brand would you guys recommend?
  4. Looking to get 2 more 36 inch fluval 3.0's for my 210gallon think on top of my single 48 inch fluval 3.0 think that would be ample light to grow even high light plants?
  5. I have a Barclaya longifolia bulb that has failed to root after being in the mail for 5 days and now it's been a week and a half with no production of roots or stems from the bulb. The bulb is still firm and still sinks when placed in the water. Am I just being impatient and just need to wait? Or do I have a dud bulb? I will also mention I got a madagascar lace bulb from the same shipment and it's doing the same thing. Any pro tips from my plant lovers out there?
  6. Being that I am living in Wisconsin which resides on granite and limestone deposits I found that I would try my hand at my favorite lake residing cichlid's. I currently am special ordering 4 lepidiolamprologus Kendalli/Nkambae anyone have thoughts on what might be fun to add to the 210 gallon lake tang set up, I am up for all suggestions?
  7. I get that bit is the intensity really that strong with a fluval though. I've had the bba problem even before the fluval 3.0 when I was using tubes. Nitrates still read as 0.
  8. Need some help and sorry for the extended story: I currently run a tank with the following 10 crypt wendettii, 15ish clumps of val, 2 small sword plants 6 small anubias nana petite clumps, 1 struggling bolbitus heuduloti, 4 struggling Java fern, 1 small clump of hydrocoytle tripartia, 2 clumps of struggling Montecarlo, 1 small red tiger lotus, and finally 4 small water lettuce bunches. The tank is a 40 gallon breeder that is used as a grow out tank for my 2 polypterus, my pair of angels, pair of kribs and 2 siamese algae eaters. The fish will be going into a 210 gallon once it's been set-up. The lighting is a 48 inch fluval 3.0 with the attached image. The fertilization schedule is Sunday and Friday 8 pumps of easy green and 2 caps of api leaf zone. And Wednesday 4 pumps of easy green. And I run a tetra whisper 75HOB. With all of that my Nitrates consistently read at 0ppm! And battling bba and brown diatom algae constantly. I know that the balance is off because of my Nitrates levels but I have no clue how to fix it. Can anyone help?
  9. Simple question will my Madagascar Lace plant bulb be ok in 79 degree water, with a fluval 3.0?
  10. So the dimensions are 72"x 24"x30" what would be your thoughts then?
  11. I am setting up a 210 gallon lake tanganiykan set up the tank is a aqueon flow master with two overflows drilled on the bottom. The tank will be placed on a custom leveled slab in the basement. The stand for the tank for structural purposes I want to make out of cinderblocks and top it with a 2x4 frame that would have a sanded panel of 3/4inch plywood. I am just having an issue with the design though with how I can pipe the sump and make sure I have access to care to the Sump. Can I leave a section of the stand open for access or would that hinder on the tank risking craking? Just need some engineering advice.
  12. So I am having an issue I have now had most of my beloved rams horn snails die on me. My Nitrates are close to 0 as well as nitrites and ammonia. The only change I started doing was dose API leafzone for an added boost of potassium and iron 2 times a week 20mls each time, once on Sunday and once on Wednesday. My complete dose of my tank is 8 ml. of Easy Green and 20mls of leafzone Sunday and Wednesday. Before adding leafzone I saw the snails were thriving noticed eggsacks all over but never noticed babies really but they might be hiding in substrate who knows. My plants started getting pin holes and and my Java fern was unhappy so I started to add the leafzone to bring that to balance. Soon after though I found my large rams horns to start passing away then noticed young ones as well within the past 2 weeks and have no understanding to what is happening. They were my main fighter against brown diatoms and I noticed that with them gone the Diatoms are coming back. Any thoughts?????
  13. Not yet unfortunately but good things come to those who wait am I right? I know it's one of those species that people tend to shade away from bc of their size. Just love them. Also @Irene your video guide of setting up low tech planted tanks helped solved my BBA problem and for that I'm eternally grateful to you 😀!
  14. Lmao I love it! Thanks for the point in the right direction.
  15. With that being said what are some triggers for breeding rams?
  16. That sounds great. I'll be getting 6 from a local breeder in hopes that can get some pairs to then breed myself.
  17. Do you think 79 would be ok? I just don't want to overheat my Angels and Kribs. I might remove kribs since they reside in the same territory just have them for a spawning project is all. I can bump up to 80 just don't want to go crazy.
  18. Always have had a soft spot for GBR's but scared to try with having ph lvls at around 8 living in Wisconsin. Am I just wasting money if I get them? If not would they ever breed? I keep my tank at 79 degrees.
  19. So I went ahead and created a new light regime the first was my old one and the second one is the new light schedule think this might reduce my bba infection?
  20. I've got a bad BBA problem in my 40 Breeder and I think lighting is the primary cause with my fluval 3.0 it's to strong lol. I'm currently dosing easy green and almost 10 pumps a day and I can't get my Nitrates passed 5 to save my life. The tank is planted fairly heavily just wondering what schedules people prefer on that tank size to minimize light so Nitrates can build back up so that the plants can take back the tank from the BBA.
  21. Well thank you for such an in depth answer! I will absolutely tone it down never really cared for that marineland anyway lol.
  22. Currently need some help in figuring out the optimal settings for my 40 breeder that is heavily planted and is currently struggling with balance because of the lack of Nitrates based on plant growth, and I feel the strength of the Fluval is to blame HELP!!!!
  23. I will attach my schedule once home having connectivity issue with my light being at work lol. I have the ramp up starting at 1pm and at 8pm my white warm white and cool white are at 100% till 11then the ramp down begins and ends at 1pm. Yes I do have the Fluval 3.0 and the the Marineland LED that goes on for 3hours when I have the Fluval at 100%. But I do have adequate flow enough where plants on other side of the tank are moving. My lfs is getting me 6 more SAE's and a surprise shipment of 4 Florida Flag fish. So I am praying maybe with more bio load it gives more Nitrates into the water column? And they will eat the BBA which I am happy about as well. let me know your thoughts.
  24. No sorry i had the marineland and florescent bulb for the last 5 months and still had bad algae. I got the fluval on Christmas. I've seen faster growth but after a bit it slowed down. I'm going to be getting 6 more SAE'S Wed. Hopefully they will do 2 things increase bio load and also clean up the remaining bba. No I do plan on it though just saving up for a 20lb tank for the 210 gallon though.
