    thats a java fern, and those things on the leaf are baby plants. let them get a bit bigger then they can be picked off and planted elsewhere. in the future, dont bury the rhizome on java ferns. you can stick the roots in the gravel, or glue them to some of the hardscape.

    once you start seeing color on them, it wont really change much.

    i agree on not using it as an aquarium. one thing about glass, once it cracks, the crack will keep spreading over time.

    the little plastic pot they come in, you dont have to remove that. in a lot of cases the plants will thrive a little better out of the pot, but you for sure dont have to.

    more than likely, its just brown algae. i get it on some tanks. when scrubbing glass i just gently slide my algae scrubber down into it. it usually comes off fairly easy.

    every once in a while you will find a cory sleeping, and beyond a doubt swear it is dead.

    if using plastic, make sure it overhangs the wood. if it overhangs by a little bit, water wont wick under it.

    i think the legs on that stand would probably cut right through any of those felt or rubber type pads once weight is on it.

    it is a good idea to seal the wood. quick easy fix would be to lay a piece of plastic down over it, then your cloth to hide it with the tank on top.
