    Are you talking about that dark area towards the bottom of its shell? Like a line? If so, that's most likely its poop traveling outwards. Their shells are naturally a bit translucent and on the lighter shelled varieties, the end of the poop piping is visible. At least that's my experience with my snails. Edit: Ah, @Guppysnail beat me to it! But I'm in agreement! 😄

    Some video of feeding Pooka some Soilent Green. She was being very shy about the camera. Scruffy the bristlenose emerges, waiting his turn (I drop food into his little cave). Glare on the glass was bad, my apologies.

    I'm super jealous, I love that kind of algae (I call it muppet fur)! I *think* it's a type of cladophora? Do you have any marimo balls in the tank? It's basically the same stuff.

    I have two of those tanks, and one was a shrimp tank for a while; really enjoyed it. I will probably go back to shrimp in it once the current occupant passes on (pea puffer).

    Oh, I should post in this thread about the lip locking drama, since I had made a new thread asking for advice and people who follow this one might not have seen it (this happened months ago). BUT, since Igor is now the Queen of the 75, she was starting fights with Tesla. And him being a cichlid, he and she lip locked. I decided to just move Tesla out, since I know how naughty Igor is and I doubt it would have resolved itself (and I just didn't want to risk injury to either of them). So he gets to be the biggest fish in the 29. Here's some pics I took of the lip locking behavior. My hubby exclaimed from the kitchen, "Your fish are fighting!" Also, I recently rearranged Murderbean's tank (a few months ago) and while doing so I had put him in a specimen container. I was able to get some really close pics of him. I will have had him for 4 years this July!

    I used to have duckweed in my 40, but decided to remove it once I added more flow (it was swirling around in the water column like a green snow globe and I didn't like it). All I used was a large net and some persistence. Now and then I check for it, lid completely off. All my other tanks have duckweed, so when I do water changes, the 40 goes first with thoroughly rinsed off tubing and whatnot. So far I've been able to keep it duck weed free for a year or more (I've lost track).

    If there's a rim on your tank, you can try wiping it down with a wet paper towel; sometimes food gets stuck somewhere. Check all the nooks and crannies inside the tank for any dead bodies. Other than that, I agree it could be Cyanobacteria.

    Been a long time! My friends in Final Fantasy XIV take up most of my evenings, so I got out of the habit of lurking around here. But things are mostly the same in all the tanks. Scruffy's bristles have gotten bigger, but he's impossible to take pics of. And Murderbean the pea puffer hates the camera. But here's some pics of everyone else. Firstly is the Pooks! She's doing good, I hand feed her and she's as friendly as ever. Still some algae in her tank but what can you do. The plants seem to be doing well. Tesla was moved out after the lip locking drama to the 29, where he gets to be with all the crazy limia. The tank is kind of ugly atm though, since I had to pull out all of the limia to treat them for some kind of bacterial infection, and so all the plants got uprooted. Anyways, now there's algae all over the glass, but they're all doing good regardless. Igor is the queen of the 75. She's dug out around her vase, uprooting a lotus in the process. She attacks my hand whenever I do anything in the tank and always needs to be the center of attention. Dragon and dinky are their usual dorky selves and Gertrude puts up with everyone. And lastly, Puzzle's as excitable as ever. He's always on the move, and LOVES his Bug Bites betta pellets. I'm thinking of putting a mystery snail in with him. (I need to trim those dying anubias leaves). That's it for now!

    I'll be taking pics of all the tanks tonight probably and post an update. But Pooka's doing great. She's a big spoiled baby.

    Update! The 20 long's been doing well. I try to keep the Mystery snail eggs in check, but I did allow one or two clutches to hatch, and now there's little babies everywhere. The three adults have gotten huge. (U.S. quarter for scale) The val grows like crazy, and I have to pull out some just to create a feeding area for the mysteries. I also have to scoop duckweed and trim the lily, or else the light gets blocked out. There's some cladophora algae growing in a few spots but I don't mind it. Only two bloody mary shrimp seem to have survived. But the good news is they're a male and a female, and the female is currently carrying eggs. I will probably order some more in the spring to help with genetic diversity if the babies do well.

    Did you put in a cycled sponge filter or media into the new tank? Just using the same water will not cycle a tank.

    55 gal is a great size tank! What kind of fish interest you? Do you want to get into live plants?

    I don't have a vampire shrimp yet. I'm letting the bloodmarys take off, and with how much the mystery snails are breeding, I'm not sure if I'll even add one at this point.

    I've kept 4 senegals so far, and I do keep them on sand. The only one I would have worried about eating gravel would have been this little female I had (who passed away after about 2 years from bloat); she put EVERYTHING in her mouth. She'd dig up root tabs and eat them! But she was also a special case who seemed to have deformities and never grew much. I think most of the time you're safe from it happening, but there's always a chance for something weird to happen. It's just a case on how much you want to switch out the substrate, how safe you want to play it.

    If you like bichirs, and want a smaller size, senegals don't get too huge; the males get around 8 or 9 inches, and the females can reach a foot. The albinos stay even smaller most of the time. Mine is about 6 inches so far. They're still predators, and will catch and eat smaller fish. And as for growth rate, in my experience they can grow pretty fast. My big boy was 8 inches within 6 months. I'd imagine it's the same sort of growth rate for the bigger species, only with a bigger size ratio.

    Just what the title says. I'm new to cichlids so I don't really know what I should do, if anything. The blood parrot just laid eggs a few days ago, and allowed the acara to come in and out of the cave she spawned in, which I thought was odd. Then the acara started showing off for her, doing little flicking dances and staying close to her. Now they're lip locking. Will it resolve itself, and just keep an eye on them? Should I move him outright? I'm worried about him hurting her.

    Got a rare photo of Scruffy the Janitor, the bristlenose who lives with Pooka. Happy to see his bristles are growing in.

    I'd remove him and put him in a breeder box/net asap if he's in there with goldfish. Other than that, feed little foods: crushed up flakes or powdered pellets. Fry usually do best if you feed them several small meals a day.

    All of my snails climb on each other; I've seen my ramshorns on my mystery snails now and then. Just check on them later and see if they're still snailing around.
