Ambush0908
I have never seen anything like that. How fast does it grow and what do you do to get off before it grows back? I am very curious to see what this ends up being.

It doesn't seem to bother any of the fish, and the plecos don't eat it. I am going to leave it to see how large it gets. It's the only piece of wood that does this. its super strange. 1
Ambush0908
I think is very cool what ever it is. Please keep us updated. Still hoping someone can identify.

eatyourpeas
I think it may be a lichen trying to grow back. I agree with everyone else and want some of it as well! It is a beautiful alien looking bit! 😍 Edited January 23, 2022 by eatyourpeas Corrected plant name
xXInkedPhoenixX
@eatyourpeas this is why I was wondering what kind of wood....possibly Oak Moss...which I believe is a type of Lichen. That's my best guess. Sadly no pics of it growing underwater that I can find so it's hard to id, it should look different growing underwater- at least I think so. Jennifer V
@Sandra the fish rookie very cool! Where did you get the wood it's on? So beautiful and mysterious!
Torrey
Brittle could be a lichen 🤔 If you have easy access to a county outreach department or the biology department chair at your local college should be able to help you identify. They may need you to bring in a sample in addition to pictures to get an accurate ID. I would love to have some of that in a tank.
Expectorating_Aubergine
There are three species of aquatic lichen I'm aware of. This looks like it could be Peltigera hydrothyria

FloridaFishGuy
I had something similar to this pop up on a piece of spider wood I bought on alibaba. I did some research and the best thing I could come up with was Xylaria sp. That may not even actually be what it is, but it’s the best I could find. It popped up in a 5gallon tank with a Betta who ended up passing randomly. I did some further research and found it is slightly toxic, perhaps explaining the death of the fish
Sandra the fish rookie
I "Think" its Malaysian drift wood that I purchased from a LFS (NC). I boiled it for HOURS before it went into my tank. It is really weird, and does not grow anywhere else. I have not had any fish death as a result (my pleco's eat from this wood all the time). It has a strange texture too. It feels crispy.. LOL.
