  1. Interesting! I couldn't get it to grow until the Co2 went in. The dwarf hairgrass also did better after the Co2. Because my water is pressurized, it off-gasses quite a bit when coming out of the tap (enough to drop more than 1 whole pH!), so I wonder if that's what does it!
  2. I've also heard that they aren't much to look at unless they are feeding. They just kind of sit still.
  3. I've heard that wolf cichlids will bite their owners. Is this anything anybody has seen??
  4. Just to put it out there: I have a 20 gallon that I have a Fluval Co2 on and it works fabulously. I have it set to 1 bubble every 2 seconds and my pogostemon stellatus octopus loves it. I have to change the Co2 about every month and a half. I did by solenoid to add, so it turns off when the lights go out. I may have just gotten lucky! And it works great for me.
  5. So say I was considering a stand alone tank (size/parameters are not an issue) designed to keep the meanest fish . I'm not talking the 1-off jerk fish we all seem to get every now and again, I'm thinking the meanest species kept in the hobby 😠. What would I be looking for?
  6. I can't wait to see the fish in here! What a delightful tank 🙂
  7. The shrimp like to gather on my anubias under the feeding ring during breakfast. They make a happy little shrimp tree.
  8. @theotheragentmI don't know about anybody else, but I also know that I have an easier time catching when the lights are off outside of the tank. At least my fish seem very aware of anything outside of the tank, so taking down some of the stimuli seems helpful.
  9. Our first guppy babies are maturing! Meet our first male survivor. He just found his courage a couple days ago and now happily zips around the tank. We call him Rocket:
  10. I do the same as @Guppysnail. I mix in untreated water with softened water to hit a sweet spot for the guppies. They definitely need that hardness.
  11. I second Daniel. Sounds like you have lots of places for beneficial bacteria to hang out and that your plants will take care of the cycle. Bummer on the filter, though.
  12. Welcome! Glad to hear you're helping out bettas. Good luck 🙂
  13. Nothing reminds me of how very much fish are aware of what's outside the glass as trying to catch a photo!
  14. Now that we have been up and running for some time, I'm really loving the rhythm of plant trimming, cleaning, and feeding. With such a heavily planted tank, parameters are very stable and everyone is breeding like crazy! And with stable parameters, I'm not having to clean heavily or often anymore. The clean up crew keeps the algae at bay and the plants keep the water cycle moving.
  15. Our LFS is about an hour away. We have a local pet store closer than that, but their business practices are really sketchy. We have a PetSmart in town, and we're very lucky that they have a very knowledgeable small animal / aquatic manager. She's done an excellent job for us.
  16. He stole a bit of fish food and is now quote "hiding" in the Monte Carlo. I don't have the heart to tell him that being bright blue isn't giving him much cover 🙂
  17. Hey all! I was at my local fish store and found these beauties in the image below. The store has them labeled as glass fish, and while I know the internet is a plethora of information, I was wondering if anyone has actual experience keeping them. What kinds of things do they need? Are they pretty good for a beginner to only slightly experienced fish keeper?
  18. @lefty o She did!! Here's one. They have been doing an excellent job hiding!! Now we can't stop seeing them 🤣
  19. I second that. I always test my tap water every 6 months or so to know what qualities are going into my tanks. From what I understand, and that may not be much, KH is largely important to maintain stability, but if your tanks are staying stable as they are, I wouldn't be too worried about it.
  20. I love having this pretty girl in the tank! I Hope she has lots of babies that look like her :-)
  21. Tank update: We have guppies! Biggest change we did was swap out the substrate. I didn't like managing tank stuff with the big gravel. I'm finding I like the sand much, much better. Guppies were quarantined and had some sort of issue that even the med trio didn't seem to address. We lost three females and one male. However, the ones that are left are a great number for our tank and seem pretty resilient. The guppies and shrimp seem to get along fine, and the nerites keep bopping around the tank, keeping everything clean. So glad to be getting so immersed in the hobby. I think for the inevitable "next tank," we'll be doing a shrimp only tank to put the bluest of the blues in. A little tank to keep at my desk sounds delightful.
  22. It always amazes me that they can eat upside down!
  23. Hey all! As a mental health professional, I was curious about what the world thinks about fish from a biopsychosocial standpoint and found an article a couple years old: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/article/fish-have-feelings-too/ I'm curious what y'all think! Do fish have feelings? How do you know?
  24. I have the 95 and haven't had any issues. The regulator and hosing worked just fine out of the box. I upgraded to co2 specific tubing and that seems to make my canister last longer. In the next 4-5 months, I plan on getting an adapter and upgrading to a refillable paintball gun canister.
