  1. I’m thinking of trying some carbon to help get rid of some BBA, but my vals are doing great, getting tall and putting out little shoots. The tank is maintaining good parameters; it’s a newish 20g. I read that carbon isn’t good for vals, so I’d appreciate ideas. Thanks!
  2. Maybe too new? I did leave it in awhile and the tetras and rasboras came and nibbled.
  3. Here it is at around three weeks. Gotta plant the new swords that just arrived, but I’m waiting for an air stone and doing a bit of rearranging. Tried some Repashy this morning but most of the fish were kinda meh about it.
  4. Thanks, Cory, for doing all this to keep your employees and customers as safe as possible in these trying, dangerous times. I was going to come in to the store tomorrow to pick up some items and get some questions answered, but after reading your post I’ve decided a better choice - though without the fun factor - is to order online and use this great forum and your articles and vids to get my answers. Stay safe and thanks again! Jane McGrath
  5. Umm...because I thought I was supposed to? I am new to this and I thought I was supposed to vacuum about 1/3 of the gravel at each water change. Not so? Thanks!
  6. 🤣🤣🤣So glad I’m not the only one!! The thing I mind the most is the worry about accidentally sucking them up when I vacuum the gravel. I’m pretty sure they’re under a couple of largish rocks which eventually I will need to clean under. I’ll have to pick the rocks up and apologize profusely for the disturbance, I guess!
  7. Today I found a little Amano shrimp exoskeleton! It’s the first sign in five days that I didn’t hallucinate adding four of them to my tank! 🤣
  8. Yikes! Well, if that happened then it’s likely that Kitty had a nice snack, but the way the lid fits I can’t see that happening. Tonight before I turn in I’ll try the flashlight trick. I had forgotten that our kids used to go shrimping in Friday Harbor at night with flashlights.😉 Thanks for the reply!
  9. Is it likely that honey Gouramis would eat Amano shrimp? Are Amano shrimp nocturnal or very shy? I added a pair of honey Gouramis and four Amano shrimp to my planted community tank two days ago; the shrimp went right to work on some algae and all seemed well. Yesterday I was able to spot just one, today none so far. I have been accused of having an obsession, as I have spent so much time trying to spot them. 😉There are places for them to hide, and they are quite small, so...
  10. How do you all feed frozen daphnia, the little square pieces kind? I have a new (two weeks) 20 gallon tank with tetras, Lambchop Rasboras, 1 reticulated hillstream loach, 2 honey Gouramis, 4 Amano shrimp. It is a planted tank, and the water test numbers are consistently good. I have seen advice that says thaw first, other that says just shave off the amount you need and drop it right in. Other advice mentions that the water they come in may be high in PO4. Thoughts? Thanks!
  11. Dawn Dare I have a full-size Celtic harp and a lap harp, both built by Philip Boulding of Magical Strings, in Olalla. This is a pic looking through the strings on my big harp at my new tank.
  12. AJE yes, it’s my first tank. I’m having a lot of fun learning everything and enjoying my fish.
  13. That’s my first guess. Are they harmful to fish? The tetras messed with them a bit, and my hill stream loach appeared to be eating a smaller one.
  14. I have a few more of these much smaller, they look kinda like tiny seeds with white fuzz around them. One shot is a close up, one is pulled back with some tiny green neon tetras for size comparison.
  15. JaredL thanks! I think I’ve done so much research and learning that I forgot to be patient! I’m having such a good time with all this! Very fun And sanity-preserving! 😉
  16. Tolstoy21 that’s exactly the result I’m getting with both the tank and our tap water - kinda zero but just a tiny tinge of green. Thanks for confirming that impression.
  17. Good morning! I am a newbie, setting up a 20 gallon planted community tank. I am testing the water almost every day and, even with fish and plants, the levels for NH3, NO2, NO3 have remained 0 and the water looks clear. I’m not sure whether to be pleased or paranoid! 🤣I have an HOB, a Finnex Stingray light, heater, 10 green neon tetras and one hitch hiker baby reticulated hill stream loach several plants. Here’s the timeline of adding stuff: 11/2 bacteria and fish flakes to get things going 11/4 plants and my unexpected little loach, plus food for him 11/5 fed loach 11/6 25% water change, added 10 tetras I have fed the plants twice (Easy Green) and the fish 2x daily. The levels have stayed 0. The ammonia shows a tiny bit and it turns out it’s the same as my tap water. Is all this ok or what? Thanks for the advice!
  18. Nice composition and light! Where is this taken?
  19. I had them make one that is hinged in the middle and with a cutout for my HOB filter; my husband notched a back corner for the heater cord. I’m very pleased. I judge customer service by how a company does when something isn’t right, not by if they make mistakes, and they earned top marks from me! Let me know if you want photos. 11/12/20 Update: JeffM, ask them to make it from polycarbonate, not acrylic. Mine started to sag a bit in the middle, and when my husband took it in today to have them make a reinforcement for it, they said it’s probably sagging because acrylic (which was my specification) absorbs some water. They suggested polycarbonate as it absorbs less. They are also making a new one from that, and only charging for materials!!
  20. If you visit Aqua Huna’s website, you will see a clear explanation of their ethical reason for not shipping to retail customers in Washington.
