I would recommend the fx line of fluvals as well. Even better would be installing a big prefilters on any canister intakes. You can use them for major mechanical removal and clean them with every water change.

Those stands are nice, they are actually designed to hold 2 tanks.

I have had some success in the past adding a bristlenose pleco. It depends on the tank size and the temperament of the multis. Some would ignore the pleco and others pecked at him to defend their shells/area. It did ok for algae on the glass but looked a little bit out of place in the tank full of small fish and small shells. I think the ottos may get killed while something like a bristlenose has more armor. What I ended up doing was living with the algae on the shells and manually scraping the algae on the glass. You can control future growth by how long your light is on and how powerful/bright your light is. I have also added some dwarf sag or smaller varieties of vallisneria to use up the resources that the algae was using.

I have used the Aqua-Tech 5-15 on tanks as small as 5g and as large as 20Long When I used them I ran sponge only no cartridges. They dont have a basket just an open area.

I split green beans to expose the soft inner portions and put them in the breeder box with the fry

Western Mosquitofish Breeding
StevesFishTanks replied to Native Keeper's topic in General Discussion
I had a colony of wild caught gambusia for a little while. They bred similar to a guppy. -
I have 2 fx4 and 1 fx5 running on 3 different tanks. On all of them I have the coarse sponge in the outside perimeter. I have each inside tray filled with 2 larger mesh bags of seachem matrix. I mix in crushed coral in a finer mesh bag in half of one of the trays. I use the canister as a massive biological filtration device. For mechanical I build foam prefilters out of parts from jehmco on the filter intakes. I service these with every water change and believe me they do their job. I open the canister once every 4 to 6 months just to make sure nothing is getting out of hand. It is usually in excellent condition. I had to saw my intake and use this Reducer fitting

that could work. python makes their own hook too.

Making progress. Always fun watching a new fishroom come together. Just a suggestion, you may want to see if a mod can move the post to the "photos/videos/journals" section. Its less likely to get lost in the shuffle and you can continue posting updates long after the build is complete.

I would buy a ratcheting style quick Clamp for stuff like wood working. Less risk of cracking the glass. You control the pressure and it looks like it can hold a big hose.

I think it was due to the caudopunctatus mostly swimming midwater and not "claiming" a shell or hole. The multis would hover at the bottom above their shells and abush peck the underbelly of the puncs swimming by. The calvus has claimed a corner and shell.

I started with 3 calvus and 2 paired off. The odd fish out is now living in a 20 long with a colony of multifasciatus. No real problems yet but this was done with temporary in mind. I did have problems when this colony was in a 40 breeder. I added rockwork and caves higher in the water column and tried to mix in some caudopunctatus. They were getting their butts kicked by the multis.

Co-Op Brine Shrimp Eggs and low hatch/survival rate
StevesFishTanks replied to Doug_E's topic in General Discussion
Consider switching to an air driven hatchery with a light source on it 24/7. I think your hatch rate will increase. The ziss brine shrimp hatchery they sell works great. -
Nice DIY would work in glass as well if you have the right size diamond hole saw.

I feed sera discus granules to all my fish, seems like a higher quality version of tetra tropical granules. I got the giant bucket. I was buying it by the pound at a fish farm supply store before the price dropped on Amazon. I was a little nervous that I would potentially be getting old stock or food that would soon expire. But was relieved to find out it was shipped direct from sera to amazon and had a "date packed" label within a few weeks of when I got it. Never tried to intentionally feed it to snails but they will eat any if its left over. All my fish like it, even my cat likes it lol.

Converting from HOB to Sponge Filter
StevesFishTanks replied to Lds760's topic in General Discussion
Thats a great idea. I would use that method if you plan to not use the HOB anymore after switching. Personally I would keep both filters with a prefilter on the HOB -

He prefers drinking fishtank water over tap water too 🤔 -
Funny video I shot while portioning out some fish food.

I would recommend the thicker option.
