Can you explain?

I bleed the skimmer to add a bit more air into the tank. The micro bubbles mimic the ones from the ocean tide crashing into the rocks. The tank has looked happier since I did that, but I do not want the pH to get higher than 8.5 so I scaled it back a bit.

How much does go move? I've only ever seen them at low tide under rocks. Do they move at a snail speed?

He is mainly nocturnal, so I see him in a different spot every morning. He does cruise the tank cleaning up, so I know he is quite active. I imagine he is a bit slower than snails, but about the same speed as a limpet.

These are the macros that I suspect might be Turkish Towel:

Excuse the yellow. The bright morning sun was making everything in the tank glow.

They move fairly fast actually. But suctioning to rocks is their best defense, you might see them move at night.

I love it when he is suctioned to the glass and I can see under the skirt! Fascinating little bits… 😍

Oh do you have a picture of that?!

I grew up near an estuary that feeds into the sound. I used to go down there to turn over rocks and look at all the critters. These things were always fascinating.

Do you have any of those long green wormy things with the spiky legs?

Have you considered adding eel grass? That could look cool on the left side of the tank as a background plant

I have attempted eel grass, but it gets eaten. I do not know what you mean by wormy things with spiky legs. Bristle worms? If so, yes, there are a few in there.

Weird... I guess I expected more spikes

Do you think the eel grass needs the added CO2 from low tides?

Yeah bristle worms look like what I was thinking of. Most of these things I didn't have names for. Like I had to look up the name for the eel grass because we always called it crab grass because that's where we would find rock crab.

This is a really cool tank you have going. Makes me want to take my kids to the beach

The drama box has a few itty bitty updates:

- Mr. Iso went for a very ungraceful swim (more like falling without style) and landed on a anemone. Mr. Iso no more.

- 29 anemones, not including the flamenco family, aiptasias and Ursula.

- Lola has an offspring: so there is now a Lolita in the tank (my homage to VN). She is camera shy...

- The derpy brigade continues to entertain, as they signal to be ready for breakfast:

- Twinkle Toes came out of the hiding place in the macros to graze on pods:

- Red macro keeps growing on the temp probe:

Thank you! Yes, I would encourage trips to the beach. It is an awesome place to explore year-round. 😍

I don't know. @Biotope Biologist may be a better person to ask.

Eel grass in the PNW needs lots of CO2 and lots of minerals. It actually also requires sulfur in the soil to grow as well. Helped work on a masters thesis on eel grass in college.

edit: There are a bunch of eel grass restoration projects in the works to massively sink carbon in the Salish Sea. This would result in better shell growth for oysters, crabs, snails, corals, etc. Possibly resulting in millions of dollars in revenue for the oyster and rock crab industry, not to mention providing shelter for juvenile salmon, anchovies, herring and other “food” species.

Where were you when I was trying to grow Western Australian Zosteraceae like 4 years ago?!  🧐

It has been a while! Life takes over, and the fish keep swimming...

In July this tank will be 2 years old. Twenty eight aggregate anemones, Ursula (of course), Lolita, Greta, Twinkle Toes, way too many crabs, bay gobies and shrimp. Mr. Chiton was eaten by one of the big crabs. Pods, pods, many pods. I stopped the rock weed since the red macros are quite happy, as well as keep the water quality nice. The tank is still brings me happiness!

I clean the filter once a month, meaning change socks and scrub the airstone from the skimmer, as well as top off water as needed. No water changes. Other than that, it is a very easy tank to maintain. I have left the coraline algae and diatoms as food, so it may not win a beauty contest, but the critters seem happy and that is what matters to me. 😊

The joy obtained from the box is the point. Glad to hear it’s thriving. Give Ursula a hug and kiss for me 🤣

As much as I love him, will never attempt a kiss unless I feel suicidal! 😆

Greta, on the other hand, has started to play with my hand when I feed. As hairy scary as she looks, she is an absolute sweetheart!

Gotta give credit to the crabs though! Chiton are not exactly easy prey

Wonderful to see you back here!  That's a nice looking crab!  I'm assuming things are going well with the tank, and your others.  I hope you are well too!

Interesting signs of predation in the most unusual place... Do you think he knows he has a roommate?😵

The hole in his shell - is that the norm for these guys? Asking bc there is some activity in the hole. Barnacle? Part of the crab? Hydra?

Also - do aquatic hermit crabs need to change shells like their landlubber counterparts?
