  1. I am really happy for Cory and the fact he has his own sponge product, but UGFs are so much better, IMHO. They NEVER go bad, they never wear out, they don't eat baby fish or shrimp (not that Cory's sponges do, but we all know sponge can be carnivorous) The list of PROs is SO long and the list of CONs, is well most of the CONs, proper use and education will remove. This is very similar to the 30 plus year old UGF I have in several tanks. Don't remember it being this expensive. https://www.amazon.com/Lees-Premium-Undrgravel-18-Inch-48-Inch/dp/B0002APVAW I have may like this one https://www.amazon.com/Penn-Plax-Undergravel-Filter-Aquarium/dp/B003UTNOU6/ But these break easy! I made one like this using PVC and https://www.amazon.com/Undergravel-Filteration-Bottom-Circular-Aquarium/dp/B00ZUIRGOU/ using lava rock and it works very well! Going to watch some videos that I might want to share in this thread. BRB!
  2. I think I watched a Cory video where he added salt. I also recently watched a Cory video on the best way to start your tank.
  3. I wanna know too! Arkansas is not as hot or dry. Almost as hot and more wetter!! Probably more bugs here too!
  4. Welcome, I am new too, you are going to love this place. To bad Crinums are not edible by humans! How are they with fish? Would love to see pictures of each of your Crinums with brief description! Fairly certain I have some leaves on a stick (LOL) that look similar to the leaves on a stick in your picture. What other fish do you have now?
  5. This 1996 fish magazine lives on my desk. Not sure how many times I have read it.
  6. so funny, I was cleaning out a big box today and found a magnum 350. Probably in the box about 15 years, at least. still runs, but the seal is shot. Fell off into pieces when I took of the lid. It was installed on my 110 show's under gravel filter, before the tank seal started leaking and I put it all under the stairs for a rainy day project. The 110 used an UGF with the magnum attached via 3/4 PVC.
  7. I want to see this, do it do it do it. peer pressure/ peer support
  8. Thanks, but I do this for a living. I was raised in ARKANSAS, so I rely on spell checker and my wife to edit / rewrite most of my important emails, but not my hobby posts. So, spell checker is ON, just NOT for this editor!! Stop distracting me, stay on target! STay on target ! LOL! Use the force Luke! I have some designs for under gravel filters using 1/2 and 3/4 pvc. Testing pin holes and slits Seems slits, long thin polygonish cuts in the pipe work better than pin holes as the pin holes become clogged much quicker. (as you will learn my tanks are very dirty compared to the prestine tanks @Cory likes to show in his images and videos. I don't have that kinda time, nor do I care about seeing through the majority of my glass. Any hoo! I am about to try some old vacuum cleaner tubing under some lave rock. I bought a thing for my dremil that might cut the slits easily. Soon as I figure out the best way to post from my phone to this forum CMS I will post images. Low flow UGF is the way to go, if you want a sustainable ecosystem in your tank. IMHO!
  9. I am looking into painting.. Also I store my PVC in tanks with lots of light. so the get covered quickly with green growth. The wife commented in the beginning about the pipes, but not so much now. The more green growing on them the better. there is a post here about painting, but that is time and expenses and well how long till the paint comes off and leaches into the water. I read that taking a bit of sand paper to the PVC increases algae growth on the pipes, so going to start trying that before paint. Here is an idea to help hide that sightly equipment. You just need a camera, a color printer and some double sided tape, (or know how to fold tape back on itself. In this post they show how to do it with your monitor, hope you get the point. These Illusions are created by taking a digital photo of your surroundings then place it as the desktop background of your monitor or screen. That way, they appear to have a fully transparent display. https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/creative-transparent-screen-trick-photos/
  10. New technology and research has proven that the longer your inlet tube/s the more flow you will gain. Powerheads receive less increase relative to their already high flow rates, where as air powered increases exponetially as the lenght of the tube is increased. (Hey! No spell check in this editor! WTF [worse than failure])
  11. Using scraps to build fish tank stuff is TIGHT! note: cause in my posts I talk about me using scraps to build most of my stuff!! Low flow, I use the $10, now $14 air pumps from walmart, cause I used to be able to shop there.
  12. Almost all my setups are based on low flow under gravel. Or packaged gravel filtration . I use apple juice container with gravel and air stones 3\4 pvc uplift tubes. This allows me to move the setup filtration apple juice containers from established tank to new tanks.
  13. This is awesome😃. I just made a wish list for my wife. Lol! and sent a text to my friend that prints for me. your not also into patenting inventions, also? lol!
  14. Was just reading this. my new mentor. I hope to speak to my lfs again Tuesday and start selling. My LFS is Now Calling ME! - General Discussion - C.A.R.E. https://forum.aquariumcoop.com/topic/11794-my-lfs-is-now-calling-me/
  15. I blew a disc moving a tank! Outside stands from plastic pallets was coming along. guess I am on hold till I find someone else to move them lol.
  16. I like to invent using recycled materials, trash, broken things etc. I have many questions and google says yes and no cause people answer by repeating wrong answers. Is there a hit glue that is aquarium safe? Which 3d printer medium is best? Any pvc pipe or other pipes that certianly should not be used? I use apple juice containers from wart for filtration containers. sewer pvc pipe, broken dishes, drainage pipe (the cheap black stuff) old this and that, etc. about everything close to safe. My long term goal is to eat the plants that grow from the tanks and eat the non ornamental fish I produce. so don't need fish toxic or human toxic. I can not find a list. Fyi, doctor ordered me to bed rest for a recent back injury, so on my phone with fat fingers. Doing my best to correct auto spell and pain killers..
  17. I plan to breed angels then later discus for the lfs that sold me the tanks. currently I am practicing with endler guppy hybrids. cherry barbs , gold fish accidentally, and our favorites cory cats.
  18. Thank you! These 8 closest tanks are the ones I purchased from my LFS last year.. Sadly NONE are up and running yet. I did work on one today.
  19. Is this not?? https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/aquarium-co-op-ammonia-test-strips
  20. I just realized the thumbnail, in my first post, is of the 10g aluminum sided tank that became the 15g tank next to me, after it started leaking. Which is now on the floor next to the 25g alumininum in the dinning room. I am lucking to have a wife that enjoys me enjoying my fish tank habit. These yellow ladies are amoung my favorites.
  21. Cory McElroy, Thank you for the awesome site and content. As an Internet Consultant in my 25th year, when I complement a website, it means a lot. IMHO! I have been involved with fish as long as I can remember. My uncle owns and operates a large fish farm and many of our neighbors (where I grew up) also operated fish farms. Thus, I grew up working on fish farms. Since I am smarter than the average bear, I soaked up a lot of knowledge concerning fish care. In the early 90s, whild attending college, I supplemented by income by installing aquariums in homes and businesses. A few LFSs contracted my aquarium cleaning services and purchased an assortment of cichlids that I bred. Then children happened. I have an assortment of aquariums from that time period in storage. a 200 gallon long and 150 show are under the stairs, empty. Outside there is a 250G, 150G, 100g, and a old indoor hot tub, with breeding goldfish. The 250 is about 18 years old. The 150g about 15 years old. The 100 and the hot tub did not make it through the big freeze this winter. Sad face ;(! There is a 15g to my left, at my desk. That I over feed daily. A 10g on the island in the kitchen next to the stove. A 65 and 45long in the dinning room, next to a 35g corner that is now a terrarium. (It started leaking about 13 inches up the front.) When the middle support for the 45 long broke, I put an 85 show next to it on the floor to drain the bowing 45long. So now there is a half full 45long and a 3/4 full 85 on the floor in the dinning room. A 45 tall is in the family room. A 39 is in the living room, bay window. I purchased 8, 86ish gallon display tanks from the LFS. two are outside awaiting attention. the other 6 are in storage with a 110 tall and and assorment of other small tanks. I like to craigslist aquariums. Almost forget the three aluminium cased antiques that I have. 5g, 10g, and 25g. They would be running and will be once my caulking skills improve. 5g has one guppy and two ghost shrimp, but leaks when I fill it within 1/2 inch of the top. 😞 I have a stack of glass and tile for future projects and several stands. My filtration systems consist of the undergravel filters I have from the 80s and custom made everything else. I also use whatever comes with my craigslists finds. Mostly I custom make all my filtration. I should be working now and not typing to you, but I felt I have been trolling long enough and should say hello and introduce myself. and my water parameters are none of your business.. LOL! That is more of a reddit joke.. I spend my free time on the thrown reading reddit fish related topics or watching Cory videos! I am currently breeding, cause they want to, Hybrid Endlers, that I purchased accidentally. You know I went into the LFS for something and came out with $40 in fish, that I had no plan on buying. My emerald green Cories have bred and Chubs now lives in th3 15 next to me. Cherry barbs are breading.. etc etc. Follow Cory
