  1. Yesterday I went to my first local fish society meeting. Much fun! Today I stared at my fish, moved a gang valve from one tank to another, talked about fish with one of my employees, shared the idea of snello with him as well. Introduced Repashy - now if I’d just make some of the bottle I bought.
  2. Local Fish Store. We all have to learn the lingo! Under Community resources someone started an acronym lust that is very helpful.
  3. I’d like to be able to look at one of my tanks and break into Guns ‘n Roses “Welcome to the Jungle”…. 😉😆 But seriously, I’d like to try some harder plants than the current low light ones I have. I’m sneaking up on getting a big for me tank - 40gallon tank and I’d like to plant some different things than I have now.
  4. I used a thumb tack to poke a hole in them to let air out. With tweezers they can be a little tricky if they get wet and you have to manipulate them a couple of times. This may be true with any gelatin capsule in water. But I figured it out and I'm getting better at it. I shove them to the bottom of the substrate under my root feeders either with my fingers or tweezers.
  5. Messed with the air stones in my sponge filters. They are add ons to the HOBs to add agitation and emergency filters as needed. I need to weed the floating plants - even corralled they are getting thick.
  6. I picked a lot of these at our local used bookstore back in the late 1990's - early 2000's. That was the last time I really paid attention to the evolving hobby. I've had tanks this whole time buuutttt let's just say they have been fixtures not projects. The groovy 70's booklet - "look honey, it's a fish tank!" I think I had her hairstyle once.... I also bought the original late 90's Walstad book in 2002. Hence my actual dirt from my yard tank. Also not pictured, Freshwater Tanks for Dummies (1997 dummies). My reading was all over the place but knowledge comes from everywhere. It's a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same. Technology and the fishes may have changed but don't over stock, don't overfeed, and do your water changes are still good rules to follow. Amano books I bought then too.
  7. As Cory said in a video, you will buy too much fish food. You will overfeed. I'm standing over here raising my hand - yep that's me. I'm so worried my Habrosus Corys and Otocinculus won't get enough to eat I've managed to raise some great snails. This thread is a reminder to ease up - no one starves in this house!
  8. After a very short trial I decided I didn’t like the super white light of the Stingray over my phantom tetras in the 20high. It washed out the females and made males see through. Very strange. So I went back to the Current Satellite LED plus. Maybe that rumored ACO light might be the ticket….😉😆
  9. It’s not perfect but it’s a lot closer! It’s a “Really Useful Box” brand and the sides have litre/liter marks on the side. So 40 liters are 10.56 gallons which close enough for medicating with 10g medication packets. I found it at Office Depot. Of course, now I need to actually put gallons of water in it to check. And mark single gallon marks for water change measuring purposes. But still a good way to know it will hold 10 gallons in a hurry.
  10. Some of those red tails are tricky - so light it’s hard to tell. Or the really dark ones - throws me off. This makes me want to go birding somewhere beyond my yard!
  11. I vote Red Tailed too. Red Shoulders have the red chest/shoulders. Also habitat is more red tail than red shoulder. Not that they don’t visit each others. Cool bird either way! Not to mention you were actually there.
  12. Hi there! I have a planted 20H with a 24-36 Current Satellite Led+ set to the preprogrammed purple tint. (makes my crypt redder 😉 ). I also have a 15L with a 18" Optibright. I want to set up a 10g betta tank and move the Optibright to that tank. I've picked up a 24" Stingray recently and I'm trying to decide which of my existing tanks to put it on. Would the brightness of the Stingray be better on the 20H? My 20H has ancient flora max substrate, low - medium plants, and no CO2. 15L has an ancient arkansas dirt with gravel substrate that I recently added about half of inch of sand to for my Habrosus Corydoras. Similar mix of plants and no CO2. The Val is shooting runners left and right but they haven't gotten very tall yet. I just did a trim and root tab so I'm hoping everything will start growing better soon.
  13. Ramshorn snail going for ride on a plant root.
  14. 3 months later but I’m a recent member so bear with me. I have a 15L from that era… or possibly longer. I have slept and drank wine since then. 😉Still up and running with its matching stand. I just replace the technology as they age.
  15. @Tactical Errornow you’ve got me wanting to setup a tank with an UGF again. Only this time with a better knowledge of what I’m doing (in theory😉). You crazy kids will probably talk me into an old school box filter if I’m not careful “ Let’s see how this works….”.
  16. Yesterday I covered my 15 long ancient dirt and gravel substrate with about an inch of sand. I wanted to move my Habrosus Corydoras into it eventually and sand would be kinder. Not to mention the sand keeps the liquid soil from floating everywhere. It’s a gamble but what are these water boxes but in home experiments anyway? Spiral snails - MTS? - immediately started working the sand. Today I decided the corys were ready - various reasons. So far, so good. The original inhabitant cardinal tetras seem nonplussed but all good. Currently staring at the tank with a glass of wine.
  17. Yes, a 20H with 8 phantom tetras. One of the males has a split fin and so do a couple of females. It has plants but maybe not enough yet. It's slowly filling in from the days/years of neglect. It's a low tech ancient Flora Max substrate with a Satellite Freshwater LED + light. My plants are growing so that's good. I do have a nice crop of ramshorn snails going though. 5 Otos in theory but the most I've counted lately is 4. I see one fairly regularly in daylight but have to sneak up on the others after the lights go out with a flashlight. While I have your attention and knowledge - the brown hard circles near substrate edge - thoughts? Diatoms I think but they are pretty indestructible. I considered sandpaper but that might be a bit much. 😉
  18. Today I read about preparing your tanks for power outages while listening to the Cory’s live stream. I have the ACO nano air pump but only one. Sounds like another ACO shipment soon! Pondered whether I have too many Black Phantom Tetras in my 20H (8) due to some fin nipping. The boys battle a bit but the females seem to be a bit nippy too. Thinking they need a longer tank. Plus the Otos might come out more if there were fewer Tetras grumping around.
  19. Tested the water in both my tanks - looks good. I noticed that my yellow walls could be used as an emergency ammonia reference. 😉 Thanked a few ramshorn snails for their service and added them to my compost pile. Did a small water change on my Pygmy corydoras QT tank. I’m so worried they won’t make it!
  20. https://youtu.be/4adUhMxD8Po My 20h tank with Black Phantom Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Otos and some busy snails. This morning the male BPT's were really putting on a show. Excuse the video quality and dramatic music - the cinematographer is learning and playing with her technology. I really need to clean the glass!
  21. So it’s a work in progress at this point. The Arkansas soil under the gravel worked great for about 15 years - plant growth, low to none algae - 3 Corydoras that lived for about 13 years.
  22. @xXInkedPhoenixX I’m a bird watcher - not a pet bird keeper. I’ve reached the official bird watching age…lol. This is my 15L - no fish right now. I had let it go after I had to replace some equipment that didn’t really work with the tank bio culture… so it had gotten down to some anubias and crypts and half a tank of java moss. But I’m slowly bringing it back and doing some actual thinking about what i want it to look like.
  23. I’ve kept fish off and on all my life with varying levels of success, like most of us, I’m sure. I have a 20 high and 15 long that have been set up since the early 2000’s. They are planted tanks - 20H is a low tech tank with a Flora max substrate and the 15L is my 2002 attempt at a Walstad dirted tank. (And by dirt, I meant Arkansas red clay dirt… !!!) They have waxed and waned in success depending my life at the time but they have always been on. I’m on a up swing again and enjoying learning about the latest science, tech, and non-tech in fish/plant keeping. Really enjoying the forum!
