  1. Algae breakout in the pond as temps started to pickup. I think I might have added too many water hawthorn plants as it is a bit tough to see the fish. My sarracenia are starting to shoot out seed pods. Looking forward to producing some fish this year. And of course my biweekly daphnia catch.
  2. Honestly I thought about running a new outlet for my tub/stock tank pond last year. In the end I just ran a really long air line. I'd just fill up the tub to start it off then figure out filtration later to get is seasoned. I dumped a bunch of old tank water in mine before I got the filtration figured out. Currently using a whisper ap150 meant for larger ponds located in my garage and out through the garage vents.
  3. Since Cory's Livestream was on ponds today, I figured I'll post my daphnia/ mosquito larvae pot pond. It's a 5 gallon plastic pot, I started last year by dumping old tank water from water changes in it and plant clippings. Mostly pearl weed and water sprite. Towards the end of summer I was getting a good couple teaspoons of daphnia every other day. Lucky the daphnia has survived all of our mild winter cold/rain and they seem to be bouncing back as the temp rises.
  4. Just curious, but What kind of fish are in the pond and what were your nitrates at before the hydroponics kit?
  5. Got tired of having the racoons mess around with my floating pond baskets and spawning mops, so I added a lazily built framed net with 1/2"pvc. The mesh is a bit small but it works. Surprisingly I've been seeing a few large Daphnia in the pond as well, good to see that they can survive with the miyuki medaka Ricefish. The fry are all getting big enough to transfer to other tanks/ponds, but I think I'll be leaving them in till spring. If anyone was wondering my pH finally dropped all the way back down to normal 6.8 ish. After I initially started up the pond with brand new cinder blocks (only briefly rinsing them). Took a total of about 2 and half months, I did not water change the pond at all since start up.
  6. Khulis might hide too much for some folks, but I haven't had them ever up root anything.
  7. Khuli loaches and Corys are always a safe bet. What else is in the tank? Might want to try an Apisto.
  8. Medaka rice fish should be able to tolerate the cold, I considered doing the same. However, leaving them out will make them hardier for next breeding season. For my medaka ricefish I have only moved a few eggs indoors and left most out in the pond as an experiment. The ones outdoors have grown a lot quicker. As for the indoor fry I have just set up a couple unheated 5 gallon tanks/buckets. I wouldn't stick them in a heated tank if you are planning to put them outside when the weather gets warmer again.
  9. Search for drain grates plenty of options.
  10. Caught a few of the Miyuki, even some bigger fry, all lined up basking in the sun last week. This week the water cleared up a lot of the floating aglea disappeared seems like the pond is stabilizing. The water hawthorn is surprisingly shooting out white flowers. Still getting regular visits from racoons Luckily they aren't messing with anything other than the floating pearl weed. They don't seem the be able to catch any medaka. Will probably end up putting a chicken wire top on.
  11. I'm somewhat of a newbie to pitcher plants. They always need to be wet/moist in some way ideally in low nutrient water. If they dry out they die. Most folks have 1/3rd-1/2 half the pots in water. I have a little more or less depending on evaporation, but I see bunch of new growth. So far they have survived being submerged in the pond for 16 hours when a racoons knocked them in the deepend. Since I have ziptied them in place they have got a bit of new growth. They should overwinter fine since I'm far enough south to avoid any snow.
  12. Great pic. I'd love to get a European reptile or aquaristik event some day. AquaExpo, Looks like quite different than the American events from the videos from the German fishtubers I've been following. I'm sure we'll get more whenever Cory's videos come out.
  13. Emperor tetras? Or you can get a group of Angels assuming your tank is big enough. Bottom shoalers, maybe a few brochis or other larger Cory's. Geo/discus tanks always look good.
  14. Creating this thread for my outdoor tub/pond which I started back in August, In my original welcome thread. Summary of where we are now: I started the pond off using 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank, four 8in cinder blocks (to raise up my pots), large aquariumcoop sponge filter, air pump, and a bunch of pearl weed cuttings. Started off seasoning the tub with old tank water, after about a week added a bunch of cherry shrimp culls and bladder snails. Added a few plants; Water Hawthorn, Water Poppy, Hardy Water Lilys, Anacharis, more excess pearl weed cuttings and java moss. Stocked the pond with a few Miyuki Medaka Ricefish and a handful of Japanese trapdoor snails. I also started testing out some pitcher plants (hybrid sarracenia) to see if they would survive my pond. Anyways today, I topped off the pond and checked in on how my ricefish we're doing. Found approximately 30 fry that are in all different growth stages, I can't wait for the pond to fill in a bit more. Someone mentioned that we might be able to get Daphnia Magna to survive with Medaka ricefish since there are larger ones that they can't eat. Last week I started up a culture and dumped some in at night. I'm pretty sure the Ricefish just ate them all up. We will see as I keep dumping Daphnia in. Added a more pitcher plants and a Venus flytrap as well since the other pitcher plants seem fine. Link to my old post:
  15. Are you dosing any ferts? Looks like potassium. Try the aquarium coop guide linked below. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/plant-nutrient-deficiencies
  16. I have only been running these with Medaka ricefish I suspect that that they might not be dense/long enough for other species unless you cut the sponges really thin. Fill us in if you get anything to actually use them.
  17. Nice. How big did the lotus roots/rhizome get compared to when you got it? I was thinking about getting a dwarf lotus for next year.
  18. Nope, that's a new one. How many treatments turned it red, just one? Looks like the fish are doing fine.
  19. Maybe consider taking a few algae free tips off the clump and growing them out separately in a jar of tank water, while you try the other eradication methods. I tend to just manually remove as much of the contaminated mosses and let it it regrow from clean cuttings. I guess I don't mind the long wait. I also don't think the shrimp mind the algae.
  20. Nice did you end up with any white cloud fry? I might try dump some extras a buddy gave me outdoors next summer. For reference, What size was you outdoor bucket in the first post?
  21. My L010s are super calm/peaceful typically angelfish breed a bit higher/out of range of where the red lizards like to hang out. Also assuming you got the angels to spawn they would chase them away. The l010s spawn in caves so the angels can't get to their eggs. In my opinion you are fine just get adequate cover for the L010s they love to hide.
  22. When I setup my tub in August I thought about getting a solar pump. In the end I opted just to run a really long airline from the aquarium coop battery air pump. Mainly because the solar options looked really cheaply made and the review either seem fake or were bad. I also wanted to keep the water aerated 24/7, most of the solar options didn't include a battery or were too expensive to gamble on. There was a post where someone just bought a solar panel/inverter and set it up. However, just went with what was quickest since summer is winding down.
  23. Can also try friz slime out cory mentioned it in a recent stream. I haven't tried it yet but am planning to next time I get a cyno breakout https://www.aquariumcoop.com/collections/fish-medicine/products/fritz-slime-out
  24. Looks great, I can't wait till I get enough room for a huge tank. The last couple times I have tried to have stratified sand it's always ended up mixed together due to stocking (bottom dwellers Cory's or other catfish) mixing it or accidentally during maintenance. Only way I've been able to keep different colored substrates is by have two different kinds and a rock barrier. E.g. fluorite and sand keeping a "dam" of smaller rocks in between. Even then I ve had to add new sand on top very once in a while to keep the color contrast.
  25. Could add a pile of rocks for more cover if you are worried about your shrimp colony. You can try a school of Madagascar rainbow fish or congo tetras. Anything big enough will pick off some shrimp. I have a tank where the shrimp colony is kept in control since my millennium rainbows pick some off. Only issue is you don't see the shrimp out as much.
