  1. very interesting observation on his waste. I never notice any of ours.
  2. I recently bought some blackout/thermal curtains to help reduce the heat in my office with some of our tanks. So far, the difference has been impressive with the heat reduction.
  3. We are apparently rough on the Otos. I'm hoping for babies but we seem to keep accidentally causing harm to the poor little things. They are delicate.
  4. Looks great. A ten gallon will fit nicely on the bottom shelf. Just saying. 😃
  5. Getting there. I'm still looking for my free 55G on the want ads... 🤣
  6. Example from ASI: Directions: ASI Aquarium Silicone Sealant is ready to use and requires no mixing or additives. The cure mechanism begins as soon as the sealant comes in contact with the air. At conditions of 25°C (77°F) and 50% relative humidity, the sealant will skin in 10 minutes and fully cure in 24 hours (1/8” bead) and reaches its maximum adhesion in 7 days. Higher humidity accelerates curing. Tooling, if necessary, should be done before skinning takes place. In applications where partial or total confinement of sealant is prevalent, the time required for proper cure is generally lengthened by the degree of confinement. It still needs to cure properly to the glass and old silicone.
  7. After researching this topic, I ended up ordering aquarium silicone. I used SELSIL Aquarium Silicone Sealant from Amazon. It was around the same price as the 100% silicone from the hardware store. ($10-$15). ASI has black silicone for around the same price. Read the fine print for cure times per each brand. Usually they say between 24-48 hours depending on brand. I let mine cure the recommended time plus a little bit more. Figured it couldn't hurt.
  8. Welcome to the site. There are a lot of knowledgable hobbyists here.
  9. Ha. Beat by @Biotope Biologist . Looks like an eastern narrow-mouth toad.
  10. I’d say don’t over think it at this point but that’s easy for me to say. 🤣
  11. Silicon will last many years unless it gets disturbed or damaged. I removed all the silicone from the inside of the tank because it was in bad shape and I didn’t trust it would not leak. Generally, a tank doesn’t need to be taken apart unless you want to replace a portion of the glass. The video posted above walks through the process.
  12. This is what I would do if I was just wanting to improve aesthetics. I ended up removing the old silicone and resealing my old tank when the edges started looking like your tank but much worse.
  13. It’s neat that snoopy isn’t camera shy. Our little guy isn’t as interested in taking pics but I got some decent ones today.
  14. Reading the experiences above, I'd say "it depends" just like everything. Try trimming in moderation and see how it goes. You can always take away, it's hard to put back. 😀
  15. I trim my pothos roots as they get out of control. I haven't seen any real issues and the root grow back quickly. I've even removed the complete roots and they still regrow.
  16. Yep, the themed decorations remind me of the fun times having tanks as a kid.
  17. Sorry you are having trouble with this tank. Is this the same tank you were discussing the Co-op's Easy fry fish food and thought the food was causing issues?
  18. Welcome! I'm jealous of the locals near ACO but it might be saving me some money too! Great looking tanks!
  19. Welcome aboard. Looking forward to seeing some pics!
  20. Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of knowledge here so you should fit right in. I learn something every day. Great looking tank!
  21. How is your tub going @Travis ?
  22. That's awesome! Both the eel and the otos!
  23. I understand. I've been fortunate with the ones we have that they have not laid eggs yet. I do see them eating algae all the time. Yep, just stay off my plants and I can deal with it!
