  1. I am very grateful for all our wonderful forum members. So many of you have become friends of mine outside of the forum. I hope this holiday season brings you all peace and relaxation with loved ones. Stay safe and take a few extra minutes to remember all the good things life brings to you.

  4. I would not. The amount of ammonia they released dying would deter me as well as the amount of bacteria. My rule of thumb is if I would not consume human food after something I don’t use it in my tanks. I certainly would not thaw shrimp and leave it on the counter for a few hours and still consider it safe to eat. Those are just my guidelines. Whether it actually is safe I do not know.

  5. That reminded me of the hedgehog I have! Some others: We have caretta carettas in Türkiye, they lay eggs here. I had a chance to see them alive My parents got these to me as a gift from their Thailand trip, assuming I would add them to my tanks. I indeed LOVED these shells but not a fan of adding such decor to my freshwater tanks so I keep them as decors in my bedroom.

  6. Made this in the 4th or 5th grade. One of my favorite things. I also have general nature photos and a print from a movie (good will hunting boat watercolor) which is technically fish related, but not really. I like to have the tanks be the tanks and basically everything around be nature themed in some way. Landscapes, animals, plants, etc. I also have a candle tray that continues the "beach theme".

  7. My first attempt at discus - these are wild caught cameta in a 40b for qt purposes: This is my first attempt with discus so we shall see how it goes - in a month or so they will be moved into a 240: I also picked up these 2 strange critters (not for the discus aquarium):

  9. I have bred rams for a number of years. The only thing to do in this situation IMO is put the other pair in with them. They might well get the bond back due to a common enemy (as long as they don't wife swop which could also happen) then separate them once this happens. I know this reply is a bit late but I've only just joined the group. Hope this helps or you've already sorted it

  10. I've had good luck buying angles on line; there is a seller on ebay i like a lot (something guppy - https://www.ebay.com/usr/whataguppy_7 - his black angels are a bit inbred and generally i've had better luck with his marbles and platinums - that is not to duce the black - all domestic angels are heavily inbred); what i do is buy 8 or 12 from him - grow them out - pick a couple i like the best and give the rest to the fish-store. I've also used aquahuna (they were fine nothing wrong with them nothing special) and got a fantastic marble from wetspot. The first picture is male from wetspot the 2nd is a female from whataguppy: In my opinion they look a lot nicer in person as the picture makes them look kind of flat; they have a lot details in their fins. Of course what you actually get is a random luck of the draw. That female the silver portion is almost metalic when she turns in the light. The three i got from aquahuna (also marbles) are pretty nice. For some reason i started buying more marbles since they are sort of like lottery you never know what pattern they will get until they grow up. One of these days i'll get a clown double black but not today. I have some from another place called finteresting aquatics. These are bred to have stronger pinoy gene (more blue shim). They aren't adults yet so verdict is still out but he breeds 3 of 4 lines with different finnage and black pattern (clown, 1/2 clown, ...). The clown gene is the one that control stripes so in theory a double black clown will have no stripes underneath.

  14. @Tanked that was EPIC! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! 😍 🤣🎉🍺 As of recent years, I’ve been digging the Frank Sinatra version of Jingle Bells. Just curious, does anyone else feel emotional when they hear this one? —> Home Alone song Sidenote: husband came up with some new lyrics for Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Originally lyrics: Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow, will find it hard to sleep tonight. Husband’s lyrics: Tiny tots with their hearts all aflutter, will soon be eating bread and peanut butter. 🤣

  15. Bond the acrylic to the plastic. Then also have the mechanical attachment holes with the bolts. If you don't bond it, then you're loading everything to the bolts. Option 2 is to just eurobrace it.

  17. Hi all. My name is Mike and I am from Bristol in the UK. I have a Juwel Vision 180 litre tank at the moment and absolutely love it. It has a lovely curved front, and both it and the filter is so easy to keep clean. I have been keeping community fish now for 30 years. These days I tend to overstock my tank, but do not get fish dying or becoming ill. I do weekly water changes of about 35%, and only feed the fish 3 times a week. I have Boesemani Rainbowfish, Clown loaches, Congo Tetras, Bolivian Ram, Albino Corys, Golden Gourami, Plecs, Golden Dwarf Cichlid and Cardinal Tetras. Most of the above fish are about 8/10 years of age. Although I do have 2 Cardinal Tetras, they will not be replaced when they die as I find it very difficult these days to keep them alive. When I first started my aquarium I cycled my first tank on 6 Cardinal Tetras and they all survived. Perhaps these days they are mainly produced in fish farms, rather than from the wild, and have become weak. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. I am really looking forward to this forum.

  18. I’ve been unable to do a thorough cleaning of my tank in 4 months due to a torn and another herniated disk in my back. I’ve had help with two or three water changes but not much cleaning. I have company tomorrow so forced to clean well, hoping my back can make it, and found these. What are they? Surely not eggs from my male and female honey gouramis? Should I be concerned?

  21. @Chris first off, thanks for the journal! I started several myself on here. I just added a Saltwater Journal as my friend gave me two Waterbox Nano Reef Aquariums. I am setting up the first soon and plan to go pretty much all coral, anemone, maybe a couple Black Storm Clowns and some other things. Is your Goby a Watchman Goby? I was thinking of one of those and a Peppermint Pistol with it since they have a symbiotic relationship. Secondly, with ich, I have tried this before and worked like a charm, Father Fish's technique of raising the water temp.

  24. From what I have read bronze Cory's do best with a temperature between 68-82°F I would up the temperature it could be the fluctuations in your water parameters causing the flashing I would increase water changes to help lower your nitrate and do daily testing and water changes till you constantly see zero ammonia and dose prime to help detoxify any ammonia

  26. Definitely cyanobacteria, I have this black form of it in the past. I would cut back on adding nutrients for a bit and increase water changes to once a week. Give it a month and see if that helps clean it up.

  29. Could have more severe bacterial infection caused by an infected abscess do you have a tank or tub you could quarantine him in and treat with aquarium salt 1 table spoon for 1 gallon for two weeks and methylene blue

  30. No need to run carbon. If the tank has shrimp, salt it up to 1 tbsp per 5G. Otherwise 1 per 2gallons. The only thing is to keep an eye on the plants, but it would help attack any parasites as well as oxygenation for the fish. As long as you've done enough water changes to remove a good amount of the salt previously used, it's fine to add it when you start the para cleanse treatment (each time you start the week of doses, I just add salt that one time).

  31. Straight up my dude. I’ve just boiled them, and then let them float around until they become water logged. From there, I’ve tried to place them in a spot that I can enjoy them when I look at the tank. I know that goes directly against what I said about just chucking botanicals in, but there’s exceptions to every rule. They just look so rad that I wanna enjoy seeing it when I look in the tank. They do in fact make great hides.

  33. 3m has some stuff they sell at home Depot that can pretty much bond anything to anything. There's a few but I think it's called DP100. DP100FR is the same thing but fire resistant. There may be a marine or water install version. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40066435/ I can't say it's fish safe, but there is a method to bond it that should give you multiple methods of ensure attachment. 1. Rough the surface on each piece, clean and prep it appropriately. 2. Drill holes in the acrylic so that whatever bonding epoxy used can seep through those holes and stay put. Any forces will then be multidirectional to resist the tearing. It will be a lot more rigid and take a lot more strength to break and shear apart. It sort of acts like a bunch of rivets and distributes the load. 3. Make sure it has the proper cure time and ventilation. 41. Yesterday I watched Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964) for the first time. I like these movies for the old "technology". SCCM will never be a favorite, but what's not to like about: a world that has achieved interplanetary travel using: knife switches, airlocks with door knobs, crazy space helmets, and campy dialogue, makeup and costumes.?

  42. I've received my Blue Platies and Magenta mystery snails from aquabid over the past few days. Super happy with the platies, not so much with the mystery snails. I'd barely consider them purple... I had a strain a couple years ago that looked almost painted. Oh well. Oh, and the Bristle nose and cherry shrimp in this tank are doing well.

  48. Really, I only have two types of water. Most of my tanks are freshwater, and two of them are FOWLR saltwater. The care for a FOWLR tank is honestly pretty much the same as it is for your average freshwater tank, besides the addition of the salt during water changes. I've done reef tanks before, and while I do enjoy them and do want to set up another soon, I've found that the amount of work that goes into one reef tank equals 4-5 FOWLR or freshwater tanks. Plus, once you've mixed enough saltwater, you get a pretty good handle on how much salt is going to get you to where you want. For my FOWLR saltwater, I mix it to roughly 1.022 or so, which means I need roughly 1.75 cups of salt per 4-ish gallons of water. I mix it, add it to the tank, and test the salinity of the entire tank once every month or two. If I'm off by a little, then I'll add freshwater or saltier water to make up the difference. If I'm mixing brackish, it's about the same way, just less salt. Reef tanks, you have to be more precise with. To be perfectly honest, a lot of the information you find online about marine tanks is shaky at best. You can go read websites from the late 90's and early 2000's that insist that tanks under 5 gallons are impossible, and now they're commonplace in a lot of places. This is my favorite resource for saltwater research, specifically with stocking: https://www.nano-reef.com/forums/topic/74703-lgreens-ultimate-guide-to-nano-fish/ I don't agree with everything on the list, but I do agree with the idea that two three inch fish don't necessarily need a 15 gallon tank - a 10 gallon is a nice, comfortable minimum. They have Ocellaris listed as a single specimen being okay in a 5-6 gallon tank, and honestly, I'd agree with that, too - for a long time. Eventually, a bigger tank would be nice. Here's my girlfriend's little crab tank. I still have to put a background on it:
