  1. Unboxing video! 😄 My husband was watching from off screen which is why I keep looking sideways. Also I didn’t realize how new the fish nets were until just now! 😃 I’m never a first adopter or fashion forward person. Interestingly… having the newest stuff feels pretty special. 😁 Oh also—you all are the first people on the internet to see my new haircut! 💁‍♀️ Thank you so much @Zenzo and everyone who makes this forum possible!

  3. Hey all, I recently made myself a spawning cave that allows me to watch the activities inside through a camera feed. In case you have ever been curious what it looks like when Kribensis spawn, here it is! Can't wait to try this out on apistos.

  4. I just wanna take a minute and say how amazing this forum is. The information that is so easy to search for and access is a huge library of sorts. The platform is so easy to use even for an inexperienced operator like myself. The help offered by the mods and customer service is leaps and bounds above any other company I can recall that I’ve ever dealt with. The community is so welcoming and supportive it makes even me comfortable to ask what I think are silly questions. And finally I would like to sincerely thank all the members who take the time to give such thought out and informative responses, inspire me in ways that make me wanna learn and inspire others, and are concerned about problems not only in the hobby but above and beyond. 5. Wow! I've been traveling across rural South Dakota all day and then I check my e-mail to quite a surprise. Completely unexpected! I mean @laritheloud and @Hobbit absolutely deserve this! They are awesome! I feel like perhaps my screen name got accidentally included in the list somehow though. 🤫 Don't tell anyone because I'm taking the loot. I'm not worthy: Seriously though, I am completely honored that anyone might have thought my contributions valuable. Thanks so much!

  6. Today I gave 10x Rainbow Shiners to my LFS owner-friend. He wanted to try them pretty bad in his own tank. Now, these are my absolute favorite cool water fish. But awhile ago, I began to learn an important lesson: giving someone a good deal is better than finding a good deal. Hoarding isn’t a satisfactory root for happiness. Now… I also have found that, with some attentive persistence, most fish will reproduce in your own tank. And today, I found 12x new R. Shiner fry free-swimming in my Java box. These are in addition to the 17x already growing out in a net breeder. So… give. It brightens the world. And makes you love what fry fish give you in return.

  7. Not a live fish but this was my first try at making an eel shaped cake for my eldest son's 8th birthday today. I think it turned out alright and everything made from scratch

  10. So, I'm doing a lot of other things, because so much is weather dependant in Seattle... But I have not forgotten! I bought a linear piston pump and I will take pics of my slow build out. Also, I scored an incredible deal on brand new tanks and two used ones... This will bring me to 6x40g, 2x 29g 1x 20h, 5 x 15g, and 7x10g. Oh, and the as yet empty 125g in the living room. Picked these up last night at midnight.

  11. watching the fish is somewhat calming, but for me the actual setting up of a new tank is even better, as it takes my mind off other things for a while.

  12. So what is your story? What fish purchased did you make that you are embarrassed to tell others you made but likely do it again. I just spent $90.00 on six koi rice fish. I am glad I did it but I have secret shame.

  14. Oh my goodness when I saw this I literally almost cried! I was checking my email and saw a mysterious co-op order. At first I thought, “Huh, did my husband order something for me as a surprise??” and I had just opened the email when I remembered WAIT A MINUTE this sounds suspiciously like what happens to the CARE package recipients!!! I quickly closed the email and came here and lo and behold it was true!!! 🤩😭🤩 I’m so honored! I love this forum so much.

  15. TO MOCK ME!!!! I have tried and failed three times to spawn Super Blue Inpaichthys Kerri Tetras. Today, I'm looking in at a recent apisto spawn and what do I see in with the apisto fry? WHAT THE?!?! HOW THE?!?!? IS THIS FOR REAL?!?!? Mommy apisto (seen giving me the stink-eye in the top right) must just think it's her ugly ducking child because she's not gobbling it up. Apparently, apistos are great parents. They can successful spawn and raise tetras, where I cannot. I'm guessing this little guy hitched a ride in on a plant taken from one of my 'failed, but apparently not-so-failed' prior attempts. I started attempt #4 yesterday so maybe I'm doing something right kind of and will get it right this time? Either that or I just dump the contents of the tetra spawning container into the apisto tank and let her do all the hard work!

  17. So i am in the middle of cycling my first tank and im doing a planted tank. So as i was checking it out it looks like i have my first bit of growth from the Vallisneria that i put in there. I am very excited and maybe a little to excited as my significant other looked at me like i was crazy. Dont think im ready to put fish in yet but still a very exciting moment that I felt I needed to share

  18. For all the cost, if I can get my act together, this tank could easily EARN $3,000 if all these EBAs are sold…

  21. Is there another hobby that could replace fishkeeping, in the sense that it has so many facets? Learning about biology, water chemistry, plants, fish anatomy, behaviors and identification, being part of a pleasant forum with tons of knowledgeable people, the physical work, relaxing and just watching our fish and nonfish inhabitants go about their daily lives and achieving inner peace from that, watching our fish color up and get excited when we feed them live foods, watching our fry develop and grow, learning about plumbing and carpentry and gadgetry and how to be creative with using household items in aquariums, and even the not so great parts of fishkeeping like diseases, pests, issues with plants and algae, fish death, and all the frustration, that we learn from and try to do better next time. I know I've missed a few things, but what other hobby does all that?

  23. My cat brings live catches indoors. I have rescued three chipmunks and a bird, plus an unlucky bird this week. I can now catch a chipmunk in under 30 seconds with my bare hands. This is not a skill that I expected to develop.

  25. Got the plant table finished. Haven't filled it up yet but my wife is working on it 🙂 I made the bottom what I'm calling a smuggler's shelf. Not screwed in so I can remove the boards, when our cats decide to boop toys and/or dead bugs under there... assembled and awaiting finish work creative clamping - too stubborn to use the nail gun snug fit didn't take long to "plant" it. wonder if she'll notice a daphina culture on that bottom shelf...

  27. Found a great root on the on the river bank on my walk this morning. Heavy as heck, so I thought probably water logged, bonus. Took 3 of us to walk it home before I cut it. Good neighbours are priceless! Hacked it up, took a wire brush and hose to it, and voila I'm pretty impressed! Soaking in the tub, will dump in enough salt to kill and then pour some boiling water over. The LFS had same size pieces of imported wood and wanted $187 each for them, I'm pretty happy with mine and have never had any this large before. The creek was dry and I think it was washed ashore or someone pulled it in for me!

  28. Went to LFS to get a Nerite for Nicodemus' tank, and ended up bringing two cats home... eyp: what are the tank parameters for those catfish? lfs: they are basically goldfish, so same eyp: what temperature is that tank? lfs: don't know, but it doesn't have a heater so same as the store eyp: which is? lfs: let me look at the thermostat... 74F eyp: How big would they get? lfs: they'll stay that size, they are fully grown and can go in a 10 gallon tank eyp: where did you get them lfs: I don't know eyp: what kind of food do they eat? lfs: oh, flakes. We feed everyone the same flakes eyp: are they a pair? lfs: what do you mean? eyp: male or female lfs: I don't know eyp: is it ok if I watch them for a bit to see if I can figure it out? it mens looking at their private parts... lfs: you can't take them out of the tank! eyp: wasn't planning on it, it is a glass tank lfs: whatever, let me know if you want them and I'll bag them for you eyp: are they edible? lfs: what??? eyp: the only Channel cats I know are edible lfs: that is not funny eyp: I am not being funny, I have eaten them since I was a kid lfs: gross eyp: I'll take them please, as well as that Nerite lfs: (shrugs) I know I am a wicked human being, but that is the most fun I have ever had buying two male Bronze Corydoras!

  29. Pond plants update. Here is the initial setup where the pond water drains into the strawberry and flower bed. And here is the current, I had to trellis the flowers up (double butterfly pea). Two plants make about two dozen nice blue/purple blooms every day.

  31. I pulled these quotes out of the thread, just to say to all of you: YES. I relate to every one of those quotes, painfully. I started the poll and thread to find out if I was alone in how badly I need this literally life-saving "hobby." I also wondered if other people like myself would need to know they're not alone in the severity of the need. I'm both glad and sad to see that I'm not the only one. I hope it also gives YOU a sense of not being alone. And @Manny, well done. Very well done.

  33. Figured it was time to throw together a post of some projects going on in my fish room. Right now I've got more tanks than projects as I thinned out some of my previous projects right before COVID as I had plans and then... Well the pandemic hit, wasn't able to go out and get new species, shipping was all over the place and unreliable for live stuff, and things kinda just maintained from there. Now things are able to be shipped and my LFS's are getting things in I've cleaned up the open tanks and am planning on some remodeling of the room to save on power and consolidate; specifically an air loop. As for what I'm currently keeping and breeding/working on breeding here is a list: - Neocardina Sp. Red Sakuras Orange Sakuras Blue Diamonds Green Jade (waiting on them to arrive actually) - Snails Yellow Rabbit Snails (Tylomelania sp.) Black Rabbit Snails (Tylomelania sp.) Pagoda Snails (B. Pagodula) - Panda Garras (G. Flavatra) Some previous projects included: - Moth Catfish (H. Jerdoni) - Peacock Gudgeons (T. Ocellicauda) - Farlowellas (F. Acus) - Ancistrus Sp. Super Reds Blue Eyed Calicos - Medusa Plecos - L034 (A. Ranunculus) - Clown Plecos - L103 (P. Maccus) Figure a thread is useless without current pictures. Here are a few of the shrimp and snails tanks and one of the three 40's that have been cleaned up and waiting for new projects. Sorry in advance for potato phone pictures.

  34. 20 Gallon tall, 75 degrees. Using an Aquaclear 50 HoB filter and a Fluval Planted 3.0 light. Plant-cycled, with the centerpiece plants being some buce, altherna reineckii red, and crypt usteriana red. First fauna in were Otocinclus, and they are breeding, but they are so accustomed to the photoperiod that I never see the big ones unless I'm getting up in the middle of the night. Second were ruby tetra. Then some tucanos, some male endlers, and my chill big boy, Ozzie (the Crimson and White King). It's getting close to balanced as I dial it in: my biggest problem is some blackbeard algae. The filter is running without any help from me except changing the topmost media: some filter floss once every two weeks, and topping off with Prime-treated tap water. I am fortunate to have soft, acidic water.

  38. Did water changes on 29,29,120,5. Nothing exciting. Here are a couple of pictures of the 29's which are low-tech tanks. In the black 29 my 2 year old lily resprouted so soon it will be a mess. for some reason in the pictures the black 29 look a lot worse than in person. Also the stem plants in the back haven't really caught yet. It will eventually as at one time before i used furan-2 it was a forest but it seems to be taking its sweet time. The white 29 has a lot of interesting kids if you can find them.

  40. The swag arrived!!! I couldn't even wait to bring it inside to open it. The nets are incredible. Full stop! I love the towel! What a great idea for this hobby too. The local club was truing to find stuff to put their logo on to get members to buy. They came up with like, t-shirts and hats. I don't need that. I always need towels I am allowed to get dirty though! Brilliant! I think the powerhead is destined to be used on a DIY sponge filter base as a means to clear water quickly. I'll have to get some plant so I have something to use the root tabs for... This is how they suck you in! 😛 Thanks again, @Zenzo and whomever else is on the decision committee! I'm truly honored.

  41. I was feeding snails in the tank next to the tank that had the “extra” pea puffers after I got my shoal for the ungrateful Bad Pea Daddy. I had pulled out the fake plants (it was a quarantine tank) and it was running until I could get around to a thorough cleaning. I randomly tossed in the sponge filters I pulled out of the 29 gallon (that, ironically, is going to become the pea puffer tank). Some movement drew my eye, I look closer, and it’s a tiny baby pea puffer! Keep looking of course, and there’s at least half a dozen from 2-3 mm long. The tank is a hot mess since it was a bare bottom grow out tank for messy murder bean juvies. There were zero plants plastic or live in it, and they were feeding off the mulm and algae that had fallen off the plastic plants when I scooped out the extras to take back to my lfs. I’m not sure when they hatched as I hadn’t paid a lot of attention to a tank of mulm and algae, not expecting to see anything in there. But the eggs must have been just shortly before I pulled out the last of the group. So I took a breeding pair back to the lfs. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Sorry for the terrible photos, they don’t exactly stand out from the background.

  43. wellp. I took those photos above at about 4pm today and then posted them after dinner. I looked over about an hour ago(8pm) and all I saw was this: Then I looked closer and saw this! I guess either she had laid and held the eggs an extra day or its hotter than the 27-28C average I thought it was in here. I guess I can test if they'll eat within hours of hatching now. I've read conflicting things.
