Folks have told me fin rot shows red or black edges. I never saw any of that, but what else could it be? Could his fins have been burned by the heater?

It also presents with frayed / torn fins. I do see the fraying and would lean towards that treatment (kanaplex).

Ultimately it can be from stress or decor, just something that happens and the full blown rot might not even present normally given color or severity.

Something as simple as a PH shift could cause this too.

In the updated photos, especially on the dorsal you can see the improvements. So what you're doing is working.  I would just keep an eye on it, keep doing what you're doing and hopefully he's through the worst of it now and this is just recovery time.

Old Vs new

Wow, thanks for the enhanced images@nabokovfan87!  Now we have solid proof SALT WORKS! 🙂 Also before treatment he had a small hole in his tail which is no longer there.

He’s in very good spirits, back in his usual tank with his favorite plants and his friend Kratos. He’s utilizing all the tank space, weaving in and out of the rocks and the plant stems. He enjoyed some bloodworms this morning.

It's crazy right!  Yeah pathogens, bacteria, etc. that can't handle saltwater parameters have issues.... some fish like Mollys I think they grow them on salt and then sell them fresh to avoid diseases as some farms.

I had a few fish that had split dorsals and one that was split in 4 places. (black cory fry)  I didn't add salt, but did some bit water changes and ran carbon.  By the time I had the nets 2 days later and the QT tank, all of them looked healed up.... thankfully.

Sometimes water just has stuff that happens for a variety of reasons and it's amazing how well some things heal (or linger).

It's good to see the recovery and to see him so improved in such a short time.

Today, tank looked milky. Apparently PFS was clogged. So, mulm city and diatoms. Fun. Water change. Pump quit. I have a few words to say.

Dirty water, going out. You’ve handled that well, without a doubt.

Clean water, going in, traversing 2 rooms and over the rim.

You fit perfectly with a Python hose so I wouldn’t drop a bucket onto my toes.

For many years, you’ve serviced my tanks, for that I offer my heartfelt thanks.

RIP Eco 185.

Then, bucket broke. Fortunately while in the sink.

So I had to schlep around the 5g bucket. Not cool.

Anyway, I stepped outside, and this. Praise God. All is well.

Oh man, that could have been bad. Is it coming out as fast as it looks?

A few days ago I had to use a bucket because my pump died. HOW BARBARIC! 😱

I want to recommend the jebo pumps for future purchases since they are silent and inexpensive. However the smallest one is rated at 250 gph; but they can be adjusted (not sure how low it goes). I'm getting 16 of them for my project.

I use mine to change water.  I had to do a calculation when initially selecting it which involved faucet flow rate, height of tank, and distance the hose needs to carry the water.  The pump transports water from a bucket in my sink straight to the tank. The faucet stays on during this process, and the flow rate calculation ensures that the pump does not outpace the faucet, hence the pump does not end up out of water while running.

Alright. I did it. I culled a shrimp. Here is the video I referenced. I kept seeing one shrimp which had hints of brown. Meaning if he’s on the sponge filter next to the mulm, the brown is the same color as the mulm. So I captured this shrimp and will place him in the 29.  @nabokovfan87

The black shrimp is true midnight black, so he can stay with the blue dreams according to the video. Besides, he looks cool. Somebody name him? @TheSwissAquarist

The one who I keep referring to as the grayish shrimp, which I believe is the shrimplet: I shined a white led on him and he’s blue. Clearish blue, but blue. So he can stay.

No idea if you can see the brown, but this is the shrimp I culled. Do I need to 90-minute drip acclimate him like adopting new shrimp? Or is the time shortened when moving from one tank to another within the household? @Guppysnail@Minanora

Look at his legs. Can you see? They are like a chestnut color.

Over here there’s a black variant called ‘Dark Rose’….but since he’s from blue lineage, Sapphire or Cobalt seem like good options.

@TeeJay

P.S. Thanks for thinking of me, and I expect someone will think of some better ones. 😁

I never cull shrimps; the clear ones have just as much right as the brown ones, red ones and blue ones. I kind of dislike the clear/green ones but i let them be and cross my fingers the fish or something will eat them but it never seems to happen.

Yeah... Brown is one to cull. Good choice.

I think he (Mark) culls the blacks but he's got some serious vision issues and that's why he always jokes about people watching that can easily see the difference and then he does his best.

I'll check out the photos, on a slow signal so it's taking a sec.

He pulls basically everything that isn't blue. On the ones that are black he mentions that usually they are a dark blue.  If you don't see any blue, he pulls me. He has a good amount of videos working with his blue dreams, but the one linked he says the same thing.

He pulls ones that look like carbon rili (that causes the black), reds, chocolate, and others that just don't look right.

When moving fry he does drip acclimate if he needs to. He also says that most of his tanks have identical parameters and he's changing water every ~3-4 days.  Always fun to watch him do his stuff. 😂

Looks a bit like a carbon rili shrimp. This is the same black one as before or a new one?
