Fish Folk
I'm not saying from where . . . but I just saw that these Stendker German Wonder Discus are for sale online at small-size, 2.5 inches, for $30 / each. I highly recommend buying small discus in groups and allowing them to grow out in your water...
jwcarlson
I'm at least a month out from ordering discus, but I am haunting websites looking at them. I cannot pick out ten to grow out. I just want them all. I think I decide and then I pick out ten more and it's a different mix. They're just all so stinking cool.

Some sellers will pick 10x for you, selecting a variety. I saw one seller today who would select 10x for the buyer at $250. Truth is, if you like variety, you’ll get an amazing selection. Yep, that's one of the sites I keep checking out lol... 🙂 There's about five types that I think I really absolutely want. And it's about another $100 to pick out ten for myself. In the grand scheme of things what's another $10/fish? 😄

If I ever have to tear down and later reset a fishroom with discus, I’ll definitely go this route. I’ve learned that the occasional “drab” discus is usually a beautiful complement to other brightly colored ones. All the ones I’ve gotten were more or less “seconds” / “castaways” from CA fish farm distributors. I can see minor inferiority issues with each one. But once matured, I forget all about that and just enjoy them. If I’m pointing out their issues… 1
Preyhunter
Your discus tank is absolutely beautiful as others have said. Really makes me want to set up a discus tank at some point.

These literally just have 2x sponge filters.

Fish Folk
Shot a video while chillin’ at the Discus tank. They’ve really had a growth spurt. I’ve been feeding some frozen beef heart. Enjoy!

xXInkedPhoenixX
Aww I love how Auburn was totally getting at it and going sideways to get the good bits. How do you sex Discus, do you know what they are? (eats like me 😄 )

xXInkedPhoenixX
Is it one of those things that you know "when you know"? Or can you tell what your other discus are? Discs are so funny, I love how they move. They're one of the few cichlids I'd ever consider keeping. They look a LOT less shy than they were! The Discus Whisperer you are. The Discus Whisperer you are. Haha! Most Discus keepers would hate me. I’m way too au naturale about them. So… here is what I _think_ is _sometimes_ a reliable clue to sexing mature discus… If the dorsal fin comes to a point, and would leave a line curving off the tail if drawn, I _think_ it’s a male. They also grow larger than females. If the dorsal is rounded at back, abs would leave lines drawn in to the tail, I _think_ it’s a female. Set up a 55 gal. Heat it to 84°-F. Put two large sponge filters in the back in both sides. Plants / Hardscape as you like. Really not hard to keep. AND ADD AN AIR-STONE IN THE CENTER BACK! xXInkedPhoenixX
Maybe someday. There are just a few tanks that I pretend are mine on the forum. Your Discus tanks are a couple of them.
Fish Folk
Here’s my initial Discus breeding plans for 2022. This is my dream BAP award. I have what I’m optimistic could be three pairs. Now, for purists, you might object to some of these. But I like them alright. Pair #1 - Pigeon-Blood Pair #2 - Turquoise Snakeskin Pair #3 - Red-Blue Mottled / Striped Here’s a video ramble discussing plans… Edited March 10, 2022 by Fish Folk 2

Beardedbillygoat1975
Thanks @Fish Folkfor taking us on the discus ride. Exciting that you could get more than one type of discus out of this group. I always love seeing the color variations. One question I have is would you ever put a couple discus say 2-3 in a community tank? I feel like I have read that keeping one alone is a no-no. Would a mated pair make it in a community tank? Is it as much about the food issues with faster fish or just that they do better on their own as a group alone?

I got three a few weeks ago, and they're in with Rams, Acaras, Bristlenose, etc. As long as you keep them hot (82-86-F) and as long as none of the other fish harass them, they're usually fine in groups of 3+. Others may disagree. In an ideal scenario, they're in a 75-gal+ tank where they can spend a lifetime.
Beardedbillygoat1975
@Fish FolkI think in the end I need to wait for a 4 foot tank. My hope is to upgrade the 45 to a 75 and then be able to pull something like that off with keeping my festivum and EBA.
