  1. I have a lot of ideas. But i dont have a lot of money, time, or space. So, I want to start a bit of an idea/brainstorming/planning journal to keep track of all said ideas until i have the time, space, and money to implement them. Advice is encouraged, stuff along the lines of "I tried that and everything died," or "that should work fine if you remove the pea puffer," or even more subjective things like "I think blue dream will fit better than blue jellies." Also, if you like one of the ideas, feel free to try one and report back. After all, if i didnt want to get feedback, id just type all this on notepad. I think I'll format this as one post per idea starting with the next one. Some on these ideas may be very bad as im just spitballing for now.
  2. Tank looks great. Is that pearlweed?
  3. Ive read some that anacharis kills green water, and anecdotally it has worked for me. Worth a shot if a mean green killing machine is out of budget
  4. Fish use their gills for swallowing, so if there gills are damaged, theyll be forced to spit out the food as they can't swallow. Ammonia can cause gill damage, ive also seen this with ich.
  5. Iirc, thr purpose of EL dosing is to overdose ferts and remove the excess at the end of the week. So, if you half dose, the plants may have deficiencies.
  6. Mollies will eat hair algae. Another good one is flag fish
  7. The best this to do about stress is nothing
  8. Part of the fun is seeing what colors the babies may have. You dont really have to worry about wild type coloration reimerging
  9. "Don't worry, it's just a milk snake." - scapexghost's final words, 2072
  10. I think the coop light us cheaper so id go that. I think the fluval is brighter but on that size tank it shouldnt matter. Neither youd run at 100%
  11. I agree with the premise that a lightly stocked and heavily planted tank can go on indefinitely w/o intervention. But if your goal is to breed fish and grow plants, then you have to add to the system if the form of ferts or food
  12. Update: so this update is a little late, but here's whats gone down since the last update: Spring break: so i had to leave my tank for around 7 days, but everything went fine. The fish was completely ok and the tank was the cleanest its been in a while. The only issue was that almost half the water evaporated. Starting to agree share Cory's view on topless tanks. When i came back, i came back with some goodies, some snails, some water lettuce, and some mint. All the water letuce died but the mint has done well. Oh, and an eligible bachelor for my little lady fish. I picked the largest male they had at the local fish store. Unfortunately they only had albinos but hes not a bad looking fish. I was a little worried as after buying him for the lfs and leaving him in one of my home tanks, i had to bag him up again for an over 10 hour trip, as i had to stop on the way for my little brother's powerlifting meet, and it was pretty cold. However, everything went ok. Ppl always seem worried about transporting fish, i think many would be surprised how safe it is. There was one problem, i don't know if anyone else does this, but i severely over estimate the size of fish at stores compared to fish at home. It makes sense, as when you buy a group of fish or a single fish, it can be hard to tell how much it has grown when all the other fish have grown at a similar pace. I was worried that my aggressive female would kill him, but so far everything has been ok. The semester ends in about a month so it doesnt look like ill get any babies. Still, i have learned from this tank and have gotten many ideas. For some unimaginable reason, androids take pics in .heic now, so i had to take screenshots of the pictures, hence the black bars
  13. Youll find horror stories abour every brand of tank but most of the time the tanks do fine.
  14. I imagine the effects on ph and kh and gh will last longer than the nutrients. You can just add root tabs and leave it. Soil has a high cec, which basically means its nutrients can be recharged with liguid ferts and poop, although it wont recharge fast enough, but it is still beneficial even once its sucked dry.
  15. The 1 inch rule isnt accurate
  16. I would say a top/mid dweller would be good since kribs hang around the bottom. Pick your flavor of tetra/rasbora/danio
  17. I think this has more to do with the light than the nitrogen
  18. I remember an old coop video were at the store there was i psir of rams nesting in each corner of the tank, and the idea occured to me that with a hex tank you could do 6 pairs. Not sure if that helps
  19. It goes from 0 to 5 ppm so how can you tell is .5 ppm? Thats fair but i think you can get away with bi-monthly water changes if your concern is something you cant test for
