  1. I have seen people stretch clear plastic wrap across the top of the tank, just over the volcano action. doesn't show up and it grabs the splash, and when you want, just pull it off and add another bit on. no need to cover a big area, just over the splash zone. Good luck.
  2. Not sure what (who) you have in the tank right now, but when these showed up in my shrimp tank I panicked, and then after resuming normality, I put two of my guppies in the tank for a special spa vacation. you should have seen them go after these little buggers!! of course it helped that I had not fed them for two days (trying to clean up the algea in their tank). and in two days every little white thing-a-ma-bob was gone! and I had two very fat and happy guppies to send back to their home. good luck with them, I know that even if they are harmless, I hate seeing them in the tank.
  3. I have one of ACO sponge filters in my tank of platys. I have dozens of tiny fry, and they love the filter! I see them feeding off it all the time, and I have even seen them disappear into the sponge, only to reemerge in a bit, and head off to another part of the filter. I think that since the holes are not straight tunnels the odds of going all the way in a slim, and the water flow would bring them back out again pretty quick. I look at it as a fry feeding station that makes it easier for them not having to chase down the goodies.
  4. Only someone who has sat motionless for an eternity, watching and wondering over our guys can understand. my Bettas truly look me in the eye when I am by the tank, and I love it. Both you and he were blessed to have time together, this is an area filled with people who understand. you came to the right place.
  5. I love the information we can get here. Thanks soo much!
  6. good to know. and it makes sense now too. I knew there were some good nerms here!! thanks.
  7. I have pond snails in my tanks, and I am wondering what might happen if they get into my septic tank. could they happily go to town and reproduce? could shells from die off be a problem? I use lots of my water change water to water my house plants, but that does not use it all. and I'll be honest, here in CT in winter I'm not always thrilled to go outside to dump on my garden (it's COLD!!). Just one more of the things that get contemplated while not going anywhere... thanks all! stay safe.
  8. I'm a newbie too, but I seem to recall a good discussion on this recently. first, I remember someone saying that they can't right themselves if on their backs, so you can turn them over. and secondly, there was a lot of talk about how the nerites seems to go still for long periods of time. the recommendation - do the sniff test. if the smell doesn't knock you over, put 'em back in the tank. 😁 check around for the discussion, it was very good and helpful. good luck.
  9. @MaggieI find this just way too cool. I have platys, which have fry in the community tank, and then a batch of guppy fry that were born in my quarantine tank. they are still there since I don't want to move them yet, but they are sooo much bigger than these cuties! I can't wait to see them as they grow up, amazing that at day 19 they are just beginning to look the size of the newborn guppies. and I love that you are enjoying watching them so much. I spend a ton of time just sitting in front of the tanks and contemplating the wonders of the universe.
  10. they are sooo small, how are you catching them up and moving them? turkey baster?
  11. I am blown away here! I thought the baby guppies in my quarantine tank were small!! I look forward to seeing them grow. keep us posted.
  12. this is just the information I needed, since I know what products to check - and it's not any of the things I usually use. this forum is such a help! thanks all. I can now sit in peace as I gaze at my tanks (sure am getting a lot of sit and watch time nowadays, but I think watching the fish is really therapeutic!)
  13. AhHaa! that's a good lead. since I don't use algae control (other than critters, or such) then things look clearer. And James Black - not a problem, I tend to speed read too, and it gets me quite often. thanks all!
