  1. I have seen people stretch clear plastic wrap across the top of the tank, just over the volcano action. doesn't show up and it grabs the splash, and when you want, just pull it off and add another bit on. no need to cover a big area, just over the splash zone. Good luck.
  2. Not sure what (who) you have in the tank right now, but when these showed up in my shrimp tank I panicked, and then after resuming normality, I put two of my guppies in the tank for a special spa vacation. you should have seen them go after these little buggers!! of course it helped that I had not fed them for two days (trying to clean up the algea in their tank). and in two days every little white thing-a-ma-bob was gone! and I had two very fat and happy guppies to send back to their home. good luck with them, I know that even if they are harmless, I hate seeing them in the tank.
  3. I have one of ACO sponge filters in my tank of platys. I have dozens of tiny fry, and they love the filter! I see them feeding off it all the time, and I have even seen them disappear into the sponge, only to reemerge in a bit, and head off to another part of the filter. I think that since the holes are not straight tunnels the odds of going all the way in a slim, and the water flow would bring them back out again pretty quick. I look at it as a fry feeding station that makes it easier for them not having to chase down the goodies.
  4. Only someone who has sat motionless for an eternity, watching and wondering over our guys can understand. my Bettas truly look me in the eye when I am by the tank, and I love it. Both you and he were blessed to have time together, this is an area filled with people who understand. you came to the right place.
  5. I love the information we can get here. Thanks soo much!
  6. good to know. and it makes sense now too. I knew there were some good nerms here!! thanks.
  7. I have pond snails in my tanks, and I am wondering what might happen if they get into my septic tank. could they happily go to town and reproduce? could shells from die off be a problem? I use lots of my water change water to water my house plants, but that does not use it all. and I'll be honest, here in CT in winter I'm not always thrilled to go outside to dump on my garden (it's COLD!!). Just one more of the things that get contemplated while not going anywhere... thanks all! stay safe.
  8. I'm a newbie too, but I seem to recall a good discussion on this recently. first, I remember someone saying that they can't right themselves if on their backs, so you can turn them over. and secondly, there was a lot of talk about how the nerites seems to go still for long periods of time. the recommendation - do the sniff test. if the smell doesn't knock you over, put 'em back in the tank. 😁 check around for the discussion, it was very good and helpful. good luck.
  9. @MaggieI find this just way too cool. I have platys, which have fry in the community tank, and then a batch of guppy fry that were born in my quarantine tank. they are still there since I don't want to move them yet, but they are sooo much bigger than these cuties! I can't wait to see them as they grow up, amazing that at day 19 they are just beginning to look the size of the newborn guppies. and I love that you are enjoying watching them so much. I spend a ton of time just sitting in front of the tanks and contemplating the wonders of the universe.
  10. they are sooo small, how are you catching them up and moving them? turkey baster?
  11. I am blown away here! I thought the baby guppies in my quarantine tank were small!! I look forward to seeing them grow. keep us posted.
  12. this is just the information I needed, since I know what products to check - and it's not any of the things I usually use. this forum is such a help! thanks all. I can now sit in peace as I gaze at my tanks (sure am getting a lot of sit and watch time nowadays, but I think watching the fish is really therapeutic!)
  13. AhHaa! that's a good lead. since I don't use algae control (other than critters, or such) then things look clearer. And James Black - not a problem, I tend to speed read too, and it gets me quite often. thanks all!
  14. I love this whole idea! wish I had seen this back when I had sheep here.
  15. thanks for the reply. guess I'm still confused, it says to not use permanganate, so I don't think they want me to buy it. my question is, what products contain permanganate or chlorites? thanks again.
  16. I'd love to know too!!
  17. so, as a true newbie here, I seem to have soo many questions! here's the latest. I just bought Aquarium Solutions water conditioner (from here). but when I read the label, I see it says to not use with any permanganate - based or chlorite-based products. I have looked at most of my stuff here, but can't for the life of me figure out what I might be looking for in a "based" type product. Can anyone help? I have Fritz zyme 7, and Seachem stability here, which I think should be ok, but what do I need to watch out for? how about using it with the med trio? thanks all!
  18. thanks all. I will monitor the situation as is for now. I reminded myself that there was no huge rush as they are in quarantine (apart from the three boys waiting for them....) for now I think I will watch everyone closely, and as long as the fry seem safe and I don't see anything worrisome in the adults, I will feed and water change normally. When things (me, mostly) have settled in and seem good, I will treat then. an extra week in the 7 gal quarantine wont harm anything I'm guessing. And I certainly do need to learn patience! good timing. I do love sitting and stareing at the tanks to see what is happening, and even though the container distorts the view somewhat, I will still enjoy sitting....
  19. Hi all. I got my guppies yesterday - 8 females. and was surprised to find tiny fry in the bag too!! looks to be 8 or 9 of them. everyone is in the quarantine tank right now and I'm trying to figure out what to do. I did have one female die, pretty sure it may have been the one that gave birth, since it seems there was damage to her stomach area. but everyone else is doing fine. Should I pull the fry out and then go about treating the adults? I feel the babies need frequent feedings, safety from adults and water changes, while med trio would not be conducive to this. Since all are in my quarantine tank now I would have to figure something out for the fry. Should I just figure on feeding fairly heavy for now with lots of water changes until the fry are bigger? any suggestions on how to get 'safe haven' from adults? the quarantine tank is actually a 7 gal container, with heater and filter. I do have some floating plants in and one medium artificial silk plant, but really not enough cover, though the adults do not seem to be going after the fry at this point, that could change, right? thanks all! any advice to this newbie is appreciated, and to say that I am over the moon with the little surprise packages would be an understatment!
  20. thanks. I guess I'll just leave enough room by the filter to get it in and out for cleaning. will the heater hurt the plants if the leaves start to grow and touch it?
  21. Here's my latest newbie question. I keep seeing planted tanks with lots and lots of plants, and they seem to be planted right up to the filters and heaters. I use the ACO sponge filters. I would think that circulation would be important for both filters and heaters to be efficient, so how close is ok to not interfere with efficiency? Thanks for all the great help here!
  22. Update. I have heard from the shipper, and it seems it was a problem with a new heat pack they were using which was way to hot. Poor babies probably died very quickly. I will be receiving a new shipment next week. I am so glad that I know what the issue was, and that shipping should be fine. especially since there is no good LFS near me, and I am not going out anywhere, so will not be driving the hour or so to visit one. thank goodness for online. Everyone enjoy your fish, and stay safe!
