  1. My red Border collie, Samantha. She is My girl, and let's everyone know it, by ignoring them.
  2. @Streetwise I have dropped my blue to 10%. Do you think I should drop my red, as well, or see how things go from here?
  3. Hey yannachka. The posts I looked back at were for the Fluval 3.0, not the Nano planted. Also, the Fluval planted nano DOES have the pro setting, you just have to update to get it. Mine has it, if you look at my settings. 🙂
  4. Hey everyone! My Fluval Flora is a beautiful tank. Happy and healthy. Very green! I have mainly ephiphytes in it, Java Fern and Anubias. Some Hornwort to remove the bad stuffs, and some developing Cryptocoryne Balansae for texture. I love this tank. I am using the Fluval nano plant light (this is NOT the 3.0), which is adjustable with the phone app. This can be a powerful light (it's for plants, after all). And I'm noticing a lot of black algae (not BB, don't confuse the two) growing on the leaves directly beneath the light. I have, on occasion, scrubbed this off with a glass-cleaning pad, but it's not perfect, and of course, the stuff just grows back. My question is: If anyone else uses this light with their tank (the Flora is a 14g cube), what do they set it at, keeping in mind I have mainly epiphytes? I have included a shot of my own settings for reference. Thanks in advance!
  5. Daniel, this is brilliant, thank you! I am indeed very happy with the tank, and have not suffered any losses of my happy and healthy fish and snails. Just as an fyi, I do not do huge water changes in this tank as a rule, due to the snails. The most I do is 25%. In looking at your pH levels, I see they are quite low as well (to my eyes) and you do not seem concerned. I am wondering if I should be concerned, if I NEED to increase my pH, or if I should leave things alone. What do you think?
  6. I have not added anything like driftwood since the tank's inception 23 mths ago. The crushed coral is only added (in a small sac and placed in the HOB) when I discover this, and once the pH goes up, I remove it. This has happened about every 6 mths. It's not a problem, per se, but I'm curious as to whether it is indicative of something else, if it could actually BE a problem, and if it's something I should be addressing so it doesn't occur again. I can safely say I have never had a problem with ammonia in any of my tanks. Sometimes my nitrates get a bit high, but that's the only other "issue" I could mention. Ben Ellison, can you please explain what my water hardness (2-3) has to do with my pH lowering over time? I do water changes approx every 1-2 weeks, but I don't TEST that often, only about once a month, or every couple of months.
  7. Hey everyone! I was cleaning a few of my tanks and doing water changes today, and decided to test parameters too (I do this about once a month). My longest running tank is a lovely planted 12 g, well established, a month shy of two years old. I was surprised to find the pH way down, 6.4, maybe lower, when normally it's closer to 7.4. This has happened a couple of times previously, with no negative results, and I add some crushed coral to bring the pH back up. But I was wondering why this happens. I feel like I know the answer, or should know, but wanted to ask here and see what others had to say on the subject, and also if it's something I need to concern myself with. Thanks in advance!
  8. Just an observation: This post literally explains nothing. Literally NOTHING. YOU may understand what you're talking about. I have no idea. Please explain further.
  9. Two sponges and a bag of biomedia on top. That answers your question, right? 😉
  10. I would pick Gouramis, specifically the Honey Dwarf. I just think they are so pretty, and they're like water puppies, always coming to check your hands/fingers out while you clean the tank and to nibble.
  11. Mick, Thank you for your response! I see now it IS likely my stem plants that are taking up all the nutrients. I am going to rethink the planting in this tank to prevent this in the future.
  12. Cory, thanks so much for your response. It makes perfect sense, and I will now have to rethink the plant ratio in that tank. As I said, the other tanks don't suffer from this issue, and I now see why: there are less stem plants present.
  13. Hey! I just did some more reading...and I read that these plants do not like high lighting. My Flex has both light bars in place, so it's well lit. Could THIS be the issue? I do now see that my other tanks do NOT have such high lighting.
  14. Hello all! I have a 32 g tank, the Fluval Flex. Set up 7 mths ago. Heavily planted. I use Easy Green on an every-other-day basis, and have used the Tropica Plant Growth C02 system (used it for 5 mths until a week ago I took it down). All of the plants were doing amazingly, until the last 2 mths, I noticed my Java fern and Anubias are having issues, yellowing/browing leaves, die off, basically looking very unwell. Picture attached. My stem plants are doing amazing. No problems there. I have 4 other tanks, no such issues. I did look back at the blog re Nutrient Deficiencies, and maybe I have a potassium issue? Water params are good, pH 7.4, Ammonia zero, Nitrates a bit high at about 50 but I just did a water change, and do so every 2-3 weeks or a top up. If anyone, including Cory, has any insight, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
  15. Charlie!! I've missed you! Good to see you again 🙂
  16. Hello fellow aquarists! I'm Rebecca, a Canadian (Winnipeg, Manitoba) now living in North Carolina. I'm an author (novelist), a dog trainer, and an amateur photographer. I am fairly new to the freshwater planted tank hobby; my "oldest" tank is 1.5 yrs (and is doing amazing!), and my newest is 8 mths--I have 4 tanks thus far. I prefer nano tanks and nano fish, and I LOVE bettas, but have lost two in less than a year and am wary about getting another. I also love aquascaping and am getting better at it: please see the attached photos 🙂 I researched like crazy before even getting into this hobby, and I've learned SO much! I look forward to reading all about everyone here, and learning from/about YOUR experiences, and maybe helping in return!
