Subwassertang scaping
theotheragentm replied to theotheragentm's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
I have a very large clump that has been growing in an abandoned aquarium that only gets crummy office light, and I was thinking of a project with a no light setup that would only get natural light. I've seen people speak about carpets, but I've never see a photo of one. I think I'm going to string it to some decorations and go with balls of plant instead of a carpet. -
Other than tying it down to wood/rocks, has anyone actually tried to carpet with it? I've seen people mention carpets, but I've been at a loss to try and find a photo or video showing this.

Catching Fish in a Planted Aquarium
theotheragentm replied to theotheragentm's topic in General Discussion
Thanks all. I've done the stationary net thing. Perhaps I need more patience. The colander and siphon ideas are interesting. I may end up having to to do that. This is my office tank, so I don't want to spend all day catching fish and people think that's all I do all day. -
Catching Fish in a Planted Aquarium
theotheragentm replied to theotheragentm's topic in General Discussion
Definitely tried this, but I think it comes down to the tank being too heavily planted. -
Other than ripping the whole thing apart, any tips? I think I've given up on trying to catch ember tetras in my 20L.

I've had these in the past. That's probably one size smaller than I was initially thinking. They're nice, but when they end up on the edge, they splash water out of the the barrel. Plus I have have shade set up around the barrel so if it drifts to that side, it won't work. My air pump functions with a cable and panel mounted up higher.

I have my goldfish barrel clocking in at approximately 100 gallons. It does fine with no filtration as it's heavily planted with water lilies. Currently it has a solar-powered air stone, which runs 8-10 hours a day. I was thinking of trying to build some mechanical filtration with more flow than sponge filter could provide. Does anyone have a recommendation for a submersible solar pump? I wouldn't need the typical turnover rate people look for in a filter, so I'm thinking I could go with a smaller pump/panel.

Alternative to Amazon Sword
theotheragentm replied to Ben_RF's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
Crypts. Once they're established, they won't require much. I would still highly recommend starting with a lot of root tabs when getting started. That will allow them to more quickly establish and grow up. Once they're in, they are so undemanding. It's great. -
Thanks for all the suggestions again. I don't think they're just drinking as they've torn through some of the lily pads. I definitely want to choose a solution that keeps them away from the barrel all together as the last thing I want to worry about is a downed raccoon. I think motion-activated sprinkler that only comes on at night is the best solution right now. I'll have to test it on my children to make sure it works.

I honestly wouldn't worry about shrimp over-population. You can give those away if it's a big concern, but shrimp typically have such a light bioload, you're not going to see the waste problems you will with even small fish like guppies. I have (8) ember tetras in a 20L with my cherry shrimp. They don't seem to be impeding the shrimp population, but the population doesn't seem to be an issue either.

Thanks for the suggestions. These raccoons will never be gone because my yard backs up to a nature preserve, so it will always be an issue. Since I back up to that land, I don't want to leave food out. There are possums, rats, mice, snakes, coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, owls, hawks and just about anything else native to the area. I don't need my backyard to be a farm because I'm trying to bait one animal and instead attracting more. I don't want to mess with electric fences, because I have kids. I think I'm going to try more of the fencing in layers so maybe it's less bendable. I'm just afraid it won't look good. I'll have to try and wrap it with something after.

Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping raccoons out of the backyard goldfish barrel? You can see they've bent down the wire fencing that I keep around the barrel. Fortunately by the time they bend it down the fish go to the bottom or they can't reach, but they're tearing up the lilies, and I'm afraid it's only a matter of time until they get to the fish. I'm just assuming it's raccoons. That seems the most likely to me.

How do I clean fish food/ waste out of river rock?
theotheragentm replied to Sneakymouse's topic in General Discussion
I'm assuming you can't increase flow in the tank since you have a Betta and she won't like the additional flow. Aside from lifting the rocks to get under them, you can try siphoning with airline tubing. It will fit better between rocks without pulling as much water. The other thing you can do in addition is use some plants like anubias and java fern, maybe some mosses and jam them into the crevices between the rocks. Let them consume some of the waste as well. -
Imagine having underwater glue like this available for your aquarium. Real life Flex Tape.

Easy green and root tabs
theotheragentm replied to nerdbruh's topic in Plants, Algae, and Fertilizers
Plants feed both at their roots and in the water column. That being said, a plant like a dwarf chain sword will benefit more from root feeding. If you had to go with only one, I'd go with root tabs only. Think of it like having your main meal and having snacks laying around too.- 2 replies

Has anyone kept Subwassertang outdoors with goldfish. My concerns are getting eaten and temperature extremes. I wouldn't be worried so much on the hot side as it would pose problems for the fish as well. How cold can subwassertang go? I assume by its German name that it can handle colder than my Southern CA winters, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience.

I've kept feeder goldfish in the past there, and they were lots of fun. Unfortunately the raccoons got to them. I've since put a guard around the barrel. My concern with common goldfish is them outcompeting everyone for food and eventually getting to the White Clouds as they get larger. I really wish I could keep a rainbow of guppies in there year round.

Originally I was asking for something compatible with what is existing, but I supposed I would rehome what I have if something interesting was suggested. Not looking to breed. My guess is with the thick bottom mat of roots and hair grass, I will get some breeding from the white clouds.

Wanted to get recommendations for pond fish. I have a ~100 gallon barrel, about 3.5-4' in diameter. that's housing fantail goldfish and white clouds currently. It's got a very well-established lily system going. The bottom two inches of barrel are a mass of roots and hair algae that won't come apart without tearing at it. I live in Southern CA by the beach with a low temperature of about 40F and high of low 90s, and that lasts about 3 days tops typically. I could always water change to reset water temperatures, since ground water is 60F year round, but I'd prefer just to let things go naturally for the most part. I like goldfish and white clouds because they aren't skittish when I come up to the barrel. I had mosquito fish in the past and they would hide as soon as I got near. What else would work in this barrel? Rice fish (skittish?). Dojo loach (too cold?). Thanks for any ideas.

Anyone catch their own fish food (insects)?
theotheragentm replied to theotheragentm's topic in General Discussion
Awesome. Thanks! I have the ocean nearby, but not other bodies of water. I'd just have to rely on what's flying or crawling around my yard mostly. -
I know some people raise feeder fish, but has anyone tried capturing insects? I found this automatic fly catcher on Amazon that seems kind of promising, although most of my fish are small. Fruit flies might be awesome to harvest. Any thoughts or other methods you use to catch insects to feed? Automatic Fly Catcher

Not happy with the customer service
theotheragentm replied to Jimmy Cleveland's topic in General Discussion
I would try and plant that. Healthy roots are what you're really paying for when you buy plants. That might bounce back. If it doesn't, well you got your money back for it. It's typical for vendors not to offer a choice between replacements and refund, but in the weather that's been going on across the country, I could see why a refund makes more sense. -
Slow sinking food for mid level eating nano fish?
theotheragentm replied to theotheragentm's topic in General Discussion
This is a brilliant idea. Unfortunately this tank is in my office. I don't think my coworkers want fish food in the community freezer. Thanks you, everyone else for all your responses. You've confirmed a lot of my current feeding choices. -
I have a tank with ember tetras and cherry shrimp. I wanted to see if there are any suggestions to get the fish fed better. Foods tend to stay stuck to the surface or get down to the bottom fairly quickly. Suggestions are welcome. Xtreme Nano and Fluval Bug Bites for small fish work decently for my ember tetras. I like to smash them in between my fingers a bit to try to get them smaller. Some of the pieces will inevitably still be too large, but the shrimp will get them off the floor. Is Aquarium Coop's fry food any better? My concern is whether too small would stay floating on top. I do have a sponge filter, and the bubbles typically knock down most of the pieces with the two foods I mentioned. If not, the shrimp hang upside down and skim the surface. Cleanup is never an issue, but I'd like to get more to the fish.

It looks like our tanks would be very similar in appearance based on the plants I would move over from the 20L. Does your puffer destroy all the snails or will he only eat as necessary?
