  1. Is it safe to quarantine Reticulated Hillstream Loachs using salt. I know Cory recommends 1 table spoon for sensitive fish and 2 tablespoons for most fish and 3 table spoons for major problems. I was wondering if you can use salt and what the dosage would be.
  2. Thanks for all of the responses. They idea about removing the brace, which I now will not be doing, was decrease the obstruction to allow more light into the tank. Adding different braces was not the idea. Changing it over to cast iron is to much work. I will just leave the brace in place and replace the glass panel with acrylic panels that are solid without an ugly black hinge.
  3. Thanks for the responses. So it is not there to strictly support the glass lids. My old 600 gallon reef tank didn't have a brace but it was custom built. For the small amount of extra light I will get in the tank it is not worth the risk.
  4. I have also read differing opinions. My experience on a couple of tanks was that with the carbon I was getting lack lustre growth. When I removed the carbon I noticed that the plants started to grow faster and their color looked deeper. I have Fluval 3.0 lights and I dose easy green fertilizer.
  5. Does anyone know if you can remove the middle plastic brace on a 150 gallon tall tank. The tank is 24" deep x 30" tall and 48" wide. I can't imagine the brace does anything accept support the glass lids. It is flimsy and not under tension when you grab it.
  6. We ran into the same thing Dmmurray. We put in a fan circulation system which worked great. I think Cory will be moving things in and out so often that he won't have any issues with humidity.
  7. Cory are you installing some form of ventilation for the containers. I have a couple of containers with car parts in them. Now I live in Ottawa, Canada but they get very musty inside. I don't have any organic material inside like cardboard etc. just the wood floors they came with and pallets to keep everything off of the floor. I installed a 6" air intake vent at one end of the container and a 110 cfm bathroom fan at the other end run off a humidity switch and have never had a problem since.
  8. Assuming Cory is on a septic system it will have to be used as water for an irrigation system. all that water going through a septic system will kill it.
  9. Friday: I started to teardown of my 150 gallon aquarium, my daughters 30 gallon, 20 gallon and 10 gallon tanks. I made a custom acrylic hood for the 30 gallon tank with fans and vent holes to cool down the aquarium for an axelotl. Saturday: Set-up all of the 25 gallon tubs for the fish and plants. configured my canister filter to run through all of the tubs. I completed the teardown of the 150 and 20. I completed the 30 gallon and moved the axolotl over. Cleaned all of the tanks like new. There was a black beard algae problem in the 150 so I sprayed everything down with a 50/50 peroxide and flourish excel mixture. At the end of the night did the aquascaping of the 150 and got all of the substrate in. Took delivery of a big package from the Co-op. Sunday: Moved the canister filter back onto the 150 and started to tweak the hardscape and substrate. Planted all of the plants, very difficult in Eco-complete. Gave the tank time to clear-up. Set-up the 20 gallon as a shrimp tank. After the tank was completely clear transferred the fish over. Started the massive clean-up of the house. Monday: Checked on everything and other than a couple of plants coming loose everything is great. Water test in the morning and at 6:00 pm look perfect'
  10. That's great Micks77. I like they list them as fish, shrimp and snail safe. Ill have to give them I try when I'm making next order.
  11. Where do you get ACO plant weights. I can find them on line. Is it a brand of lead plant weights. I am very reluctant to us lead in my tank. If it’s horrible for us I can’t imagine it’s any better for fish or plants.
  12. Thanks for the reply. I have tried slightly cover them with the substrate. If that doesn’t work I will try the rocks.
  13. Yes I glue all of my rhizome plats to rock. I am asking about other plants that go in the soil.
  14. I was wondering if anyone has used Eco-complete and has trouble getting plants to stay down. Several of my plants just keep floating up or won't stay in the substrate at all. I would prefer not house lead weights. I have seen some advice on gluing them to rocks. Wouldn't this inhibit root growth.
  15. I would be stuck if my LFS had it. We only have one none chain fish store here. They are great and I have never had a problem bring anything home.

    Guppies dying

My last water change was 4 weeks ago. My ph out of the tap is 6.5. I am running 2 full media bags of crushed coral in my Fluval FX6 which gets my ph up to 7.0 to 7.2. I have always done water changes every 4 weeks and this is the first time my nitrates have jumped to 80. The nitrates usually sit between 20 and 40. I am not always able to get the dead fish out of the tank because they end up in the caves, plants and crevices that I created for the fish.

    Guppies dying

In one of my aquariums all of my guppies are dying. All of the other fish are fine and show no signs of disease or stress. I have had the guppies for over 6 months. My nitrates have been climbing over the last few months. They are usually between 20 and 40. Nothing has changed in my lighting, fertilizer dosing and if anything I am feeding less than usual. My plants are growing like crazy. Tank: 150 gallons Lighting: Fluval plant 3.0 Fertilizer: Easy Green 1 pump for every 10 gallons Water: Ammonia 0 Nitrate 80 Nitrite 0 GH 150 KH 100 PH 7.0
  19. Thanks Brandy. That’s exactly what I thought and have read. It’s nice to get actual confirmation.
  20. I have had a bad outbreak of black beard algae. I have started to adjust my lighting and fertilizer to correct it. I will only be making small adjust to the lighting and fertilizer separately and slowly. My question is if I set-up a tank with some new eco-complete substrate can I use my existing tank water and one of the canister filters to cycle the new tank or will the water and filter have black bear algae spores that will contaminate the new tank. I want to move the fish to the new tank so I can give the old tank, stone and drift wood a good cleaning. I will let the amano shrimp take care of the effected plants.
  21. I am having the same problem with my Amano shrimp. I never see them anymore. They all group together in some drift wood and aren't touching any of my algae. My water parameters are almost identical to yours. Wish I could help but we are both in the same boat.
