  1. I have a tank with a little bit of soil and a sand cap with Malaysian trumpet snails. I lightly feed this tank as the only other creatures are 9 shrimp and 1 betta. For the most part the shrimp eat algae and catappa leaf. The betta either eats floating pellets or Repashy, or I will feed frozen foods with tongs, so it never even hits the substrate. I barely see the snails because they like to burrow. If there is leftover Repashy I don’t see the snails going for it, but the shrimps do. I heard the snails are nocturnal but I don’t stay up to check back after lights out. They are so small, I don’t see any issue with bioload, especially since they burrow most of the time. I test the water weekly, and never get any ammonia readings due to soil disrupt, etc I can’t speak to your other questions, only these topics based on my personal experience. P.S. When I had them in the shrimp tank they never competed the shrimps for food. They just kinda did their own thing. They are most interested in burrowing.
  2. Fish for sale at Aquashella Bettas already starting to sell out. This is the Badfish booth: a sister store of Aquarium Co Op. My friend bought a betta from Badfish. Here is another booth selling bags of fish hung up. Trust me. This setup is good. Also each bag had ammonia removal sponge. (Friend bought a trio of bumblebee gobies from here) Some booths had bags of fish in bins. Sorry, but that was a hot mess. All the customers were picking up the bags to look at the fish; the fish were freaking out; then the customers put the bags back down; the next customers would come and do the same. So much stress for the fish. I bought my fish out of the clear bin next to this one. I asked the shop to hold my purchase until I was leaving. They bagged the fish and kept the bag in the bin for me. Easy peasy. Display tank at entrance Coral frags
  3. To add to what @EL2 said, not all water conditioners are created equal. Be sure you have the one that detoxifies ammonia. Prime or Fritz Complete are examples. You must redose daily until you get your ammonia test kit, because the detoxifying effects do not last…
  4. One of my YouTube followers said (re: my pristella tetra) : 11 years, is that old for these fish? And I was like, good question. Let me look up their lifespan. It said 4-5 years! 😯
  5. The quarantine kids are doing so well. Red light because if I put the white one on, they all hide in the corner. They hate it. But I do use it briefly twice a day for health checks. Oops, sorry that was blurry. Anyway hopefully you can tell they are using the tank space and seem comfortable. I don’t usually do a sand bottom for quarantine, but it’s the tank that was already seeded so we are rolling with it. They probably feel more comfy with substrate anyway. *shrug* Also they are going to town on the ostracods in there. I did some shrimp tank maintenance today and then just watched the tanks for a long time. Geppetto and I spent some quality time together. He got a coconut hut today. He knows it’s there but hasn’t ventured in yet. He’s used to tunnels and thinks the hut looks spooky. We also played chase-the-skewer and chase-the-fish (fake fish I make swim past the tank). Then we played come-over-here which is just a finger wiggle on the side of the tank, and he will rush toward the activity. I like to do that where he sees it through his tunnel and he swims through the tunnel to get to the action. There were a bunch of shrimps I saw in his tank this evening. If he sees them he will swim toward them but once they zoom he gives up immediately. Too much effort, I guess. LOL He had a seat on his little leaf as I turned out his light.
  6. Aquascaping contest All of the above tanks were being raffled off after, everything included but the stand. This may not have been part of the contest? It was part of a vendor booth. The gentleman found a hole puncher that made leaves. He used that on catappa leaves and put those at the base of this tree. This one was in a vendor booth. And then don’t tell the contestants but, my favorite scape was the sunset tank at the CaribSea booth.
  7. No kidding. Right now they are all over the place lol. Their feeding behavior reminds me of guppies, how they pick at everything in the tank Shrimp because the fish are so tiny the shrimps don’t fit in their mouths. The tiniest of shrimplets might, but 2 LFS told me they are ok with shrimps and they will not decimate the population.
  8. I use terracotta all the time and don’t have the issue. I do not boil it. Do you use wood, leaves, or other botanicals in the tank?
  9. I noticed you mentioned you used test strips. Do you have both types? One would be the multi test strip, and the other type would be the ammonia test strip. Have you been taking ammonia readings? The parameters you listed above are only the ones from the multi strip. Of “the big 3” (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), ammonia is the most toxic.
  10. Introducing the new gang of ember tetras (9). They are getting color already. Here is yesterday: And here is today. I haven’t done anything as far as proactive treatment. I know they had a lot of transport lately. Also they were in a bin at Aquashella yesterday where a net was repeatedly dipped in and out of the tank. I did the increased dosage of Stress Coat though. (There is a normal dose and then a fish-are-stressed dose.) Also they seemed to be searching and picking around, and searching again for food. I think they were fasted so I put a tiny chunk of Community Plus Repashy, and they are treating that like a drive through. They will swim around and then when going past the Repashy, take a bite and cruise on. Also! They use the cave a lot, in and out and around! It’s so cute. Not all tetras use caves. My other ones sure don’t. These are also beginning to use multi-levels of the tank, so I think they are going to do just fine. I do like to preventatively treat for parasites, but not for “all of the things”. I haven’t decided if I’d go the salt route or the paracleanse route yet. Both are already stocked in the fish meds cabinet. We just never know what’s going on internally. For now I’m just letting them rest and adjust for a few days. And these guys are tiny!
  11. I don’t have pure blue dreams anymore. I gave those to my friend and kept the wilds and inkblot blue dreams.
  12. The judges were us! After the shrimps passed their health checks (visible health issues are a disqualification). OK, not to toot my own horn or anything, but I feel like a lot of my blue dreams were as good as these. 😉 What would you like to see next? 1. Fish for sale 2. Loot haul
  13. Ok excluding shrimp, which has its own chunk of photos from the contest, here are some of the non-fish animals of Aquashella. Danger noodles: Rat snek: Bearded dragon: Not pictured: parrots, bengal cats, owl (looked at bengal kittens like, “mmm, lunch” - no srsly..) 14. I wish, but that would mean I would have to spend a day writing a post! 🤣 So we will go in phases.
  15. Alrighty here are the new kids. These are ember tetra. I bought 8; he gave me 9. 🎉 They are tiny nano fish! ❤️ This is what they will look like when they color up. And you know I can’t resist a snail 🐌 ❤️ I adopted this little blue guy from Kat’s Aquatics. He’s still a little tyke! He found a nice leaf to spend the night on. He decided to sleep in this morning. 🙂 What would you like to see next? 1. Loot haul 2. Non-fish animals at Aquashella
  16. This shows the difference between Kat’s Aquatics calcium vs competitor calcium. I asked the guy, what’s so bad about phosphates? He said phosphates = algae probs. Noted! A pepper grinder with fish food! They sell several varieties. Dr. Tim’s products are worth another look. They have a bunch of media to help with various tank issues. Also a gel food that doesn’t turn to mush in the tank. You put in a block; it stays as a block. Seaweed-based binder vs gelatin. But some cons: must be kept frozen. Once prepared, can only freeze 1 week. Once in tank, must be removed in 2-3 hours. I won full size bottles of Prime and Stability. This is tank safe: corydoras re: The paludarium in the video. BiOrb has similar with built in light and mister, and they are pretty slick! They are not marketed for animal use but they sure are cool for plants. The bottom of the biOrb will detect dryness and inform the top of the biOrb to put out mist. Also these products are built with such ventilation to regulate humidity as well as keep the glass clear for viewing. I had grandiose plans to see speakers. I never saw any! There was too much going on, and a lot of ground to cover! We even forgot to eat, until about 2:30 when we realized our tummies were grumbling loudly. We were living off the Halloween candy that practically every vendor booth had available! 🤣 We didn’t get to all the booths, but we believe we got to all the freshwater ones at least, skipping some saltwater things as the event closed for the day. Speaking of saltwater, one booth had this pill bottle lookin thing with holes. It attaches to the side of the tank with magnets. You put frozen food in it, then you slide it down to the bottom with the magnets, and it allows the bottom feeders to eat the frozen food as it thaws. If you download the Fish Stream app it will notify you of the livestreams happening at the event today (today is the last day). I got to meet Joanna and Jason from Prime Time Aquatics, Dustin from Dustin's Fish Tanks, and the gal from Aquarium Info. She was so sweet! I also got to see MD Fish Tanks and Matt from Matt's Fish Room (they were on their way to a speaking engagement so I didn't get to meet or speak with them due to their "bouncer" with the big frown). 17. Today I attended Aquashella Daytona 2023! It was epic! I learned a lot of things from a lot of cool people. It is 10pm and I just finished acclimating my new kids to their respective tanks and tidying up the fish room because with all the merch and previous maintenance I failed to clean up, it looked like a bomb hit. For now, I will leave you with a few photos and a video of the entrance. I have a lot of photos and videos, so we will have to do this in parts. What would you like to see next? 1. Interesting items I found, or 2. Shrimp contest
