@Minanora @laritheloud Do your chickens ever lay blue eggs?  My friend has a chicken that lays blue ones.  Pretty neat.

All of my girls are supposedly sapphire olive eggers....

Mine are squatting and singing the song of their people like they laid an egg, but no eggs yet, 14 weeks old and the first squat, from Susu, was at 12 weeks. She's also laying in the nesting box, moving bedding and such.

Anyway, my point is that they may lay eggs in shades of green. But there's a chance that they may lay blue, pink, or brown eggs as well. 🤷‍♀️

Looks like I don’t have enough recent pictures of my hens! But here’s Fluffy, our friendliest chicken, who recently hopped up onto my back when I bent down for something. She’s not allowed to do that anymore after she pecked me in the eye in 2018, but she doesn’t think any rules apply to her at all, ever. And yes, she did poop on me.

Here’s a picture from a few months ago. We hadn’t been getting eggs for a while, and I decided to go hunting under the coop.

This summer I decided to help out the local butterfly population and raised some black swallowtail caterpillars. Their mom laid eggs on our dill plant (which we plant specifically for caterpillars). We raised and released five butterflies!

And then of course, an obligatory picture of the queen of the house, Rosemary. Here she is ready for bed. Not sure where I was supposed to sleep. 😄IMG_9061.jpeg.5cd28320b4510f5a7a51a1b70104e795.jpeg

  • 3 weeks later...

Yesterday I got a betta from the LFS for free as a surrender since it wasn't doing well. Spoiler alert:  it died before I even went to sleep. But this isn't about him...

I was quick setting up a hospital tank to care for the guy. I rinsed it out, placed it on a stand, put the heater in, then I went to fill a bucket of water to start filling the tank. When I got back my 2 year old cat was sitting in the tank just looking at me. It's almost as if she was saying "well, it's a box, what did you expect?" Haha.

Looks like a Mississippi kite just cooling off his toes and getting a nice drinkums.  Nice vid!  Cool visitor!

The hawk is primarily brown/tan and when it flies there are very noticeable white stripes on its tail.  (FL region.)

It landed on a branch near me this weekend and seems unafraid.

I think that might be a juvie transitioning to adult plumage.  Juvies have flecked breasts and as they transition they can be a bit hard to identify at a distance.  We have juvenile Kites all over the place here right now and I saw that very light head and looked like a light tail, too.  Can you see if the tail is forked?  I can’t make it out clearly enough.  There aren’t many US raptors that have a very pale head.

The other that occurs to me is a red shouldered hawk based more on the body and ignoring the head color in case that’s just the way the light is hitting it.  Lots of juvie red shoulders around right now, too, but you’ll usually find them in a group, seldom alone unless they’re in trouble.

Just found a listing that says Florida red shoulders are paler with a grey head and back!  That’s probably what you have there.  Not too common to see them alone so keep a close eye out for re-appearances.  It could potentially be getting into trouble.

I can't tell when it is perched; I'd have to catch it mid-flight to tell.

I think it may have made a nest up in my tree because we feed squirrels in the backyard. 🙄 It had one in its talon the one day and 7 or 8 of our crows went ballistic, causing a huge scene, and the hawk let the squirrel go, and the crows ran the hawk off.  Crows were cawing, hawk was screeching - you could hear them at least 2 blocks away; I could see them over the rooftops.  The crows DO NOT like the hawk at all.
