Jandlms Posted June 23, 2021 Share Posted June 23, 2021 I recently purchased an assortment of sponge filters from Aquarium Coop for my new fish room. Small sponge filters went into several ten gallon tanks with no problems. medium and large sponge filters in larger tanks refuse to sink. What am I doing wrong. I know I can silicon some rocks to the top and probably get them to sink but I’m not wild about the silicon blob look. Any advise would be appreciated. xXInkedPhoenixX Posted June 23, 2021 Share Posted June 23, 2021 My first ones were a little stubborn too, even after squeezing- they had too light a base for the install is my guess. New airline was stiff enough for me to use a couple of strategically placed suction holders to keep it down. now they will stay even if the airline suction cup comes unstuck! I will try temporarily weighing them down and running them overnight and see if that has any effect. Small ones sank immediately. I never even got a chance or a need to squeeze them. Extra question. ARMYVET Posted June 23, 2021 Share Posted June 23, 2021 (edited) I just put 2 of the Large ACO sponge filters in my pond. 10 min after putting them in they were floating....I squeezed out all the air and they sank.....10 min later they were floating again. I was like there is no way this should be happening.....now i did use check valves on them but had the check valve right near the sponge filter....dont ask me why i did that just that I did🙄 Well thats a big air bubble right next to the filter....I removed the check valve ...reinstalled the filter and it sank never to return to the surface. This morning both were sunken and tipped over so the weights fell off. The saga is apparently over. Thanks for the input folks, although I would still like to hear any ideas about using a no clog airstone in them for a finer flow of bubbles. ADMWNDSR83 Posted June 25, 2021 Share Posted June 25, 2021 I always saw the no-clog air stones as a standard for my ACO filter, no modifications necessary, but maybe that's just me.
