  1. Hey all, I've recently become pretty fascinated about the world of guppy genetics and selective breeding! I'm trying to read and watch as much as I can to learn about the topic and would love to try and develop my own strain. I have a couple of preliminary questions: 1. How can you know the phenotype traits of a female? Do you just have to breed her with a male and see what the offspring throw? 2. In regards to genetic diversity, are there any rules/guiding principles in regards to breeding 'new' guppies into a line that youre trying to set in order to increase the genetic diversity, or is this not advised? 3. When trying to create variations/lines, do most people have an end goal in mind and breed for that objective, or do they see what a certain guppy with throw, cull to what they like and watch it develop over the generations? I would love any other insight that you may have - any fun facts or cool stories that you'd like to share. As I said, Im pretty intrigued by it at the moment.
  2. This is such amazing information! I have absolutely loved reading this thread, so cool to hear about your daphnia culture. Im just about to head into my mid year holidays after a pretty intense semester at uni and one of my holiday goals is to establish few cultures. My thinking is that a few different cultures (micro worms, black worms and now ill try daphnia) could be a good way to diversify and provide my fishies with some nutrition and differences in their diet. Has anyone else got any cultures on the go?
  3. Hey all! Ive got a big pack of Hikari Gold. Im just wondering, would it be a good idea to take out a portion and put it in the freezer? It is taking be some time to get through the packet as I dont have very many tanks. Thanks all :))
  4. Ok, so I bought a male from my LFS and I’m happy to announce that patches and angel ARE LOVERS!!! We had one batch of fertilised eggs last week which was a bit of a fail (they are all the eggs which I think is normal for the first few times??), but it was so cool and VERY VERY EXCITING. I just have a question re: pulling the eggs. I’ve got the angels in a 4ft community tank so I know if I want to try and raise the fry without being decimated by my other fish I have to pull them but at what point should I pull them? Last spawn I think they got to wriggler stage, should I try and pull then?? Thanks for the advice :)))
  5. Is that the l494 in the picture?? What a gorgeous fish!!!
  6. Sorry for the bad photo but THERES BABIES!!! They’re not venturing out of the pot yet and I’m thinking they may be stuck?? I’m thinking if they’re yet to venture out in a few days I might give them a bit of a nudge. I’ve been trying not to move their little cave around too much but I think I can see some eggs still in there. Is it likely that the male wouldn’t have fertilised all eggs??
  7. Just thought I’d post this funny. I completely forgot that I was water changing as I was cooking dinner tonight. Remembered seconds before overflow hahaha
  8. Thanks so much! This is so helpful. Ill keep you posted :))
  9. Im in a forum on Apistogramma.com, I would definitely try there, they really help with identification. I had an apisto sold to me that was completely different to what it was IDd as. I dont know the next thing, however, so I cant help, but they look like really beautiful fish!!!!
  10. Hi all, Just a follow up to this! Angel was in a 2ft holding tank after my 4ft shattered on me and I was setting up a new one. She has since been moved to that 4ft and her fins have recovered dramatically!!!! After this post, she had a few slits forming and it really wasnt good! Shes looking very good now. On a tangent, I finally know angel is a female, SHE LAY EGGS. I was so stoked to find them! Exciting times ahead as I look to a breeding project :))
  11. Hey all, Ive just had a successful spawn from a pair of BNPs!!! Im very excited, its my first ever spawn. Im not too sure when the spawn happened, but the male has been fanning for about 4 days I think now. I just have a question in regards to pulling the eggs. The pair are currently in a 2ft tank with shrimp, and Im wondering if I need to pull the eggs? Will they likely be predated upon by the parents? Im doing lots of research so I can be prepared to try and raise them up, however, I am not determined to raise every single baby. I'm more looking at trying to raise a few. Advice and personal experience would be really appreciated because, as I said, this is my first ever spawn! Thanks heaps, Jeremy
  12. Hey crew!!! I just wanted to ask a question to try and find out more about my angelfish named aptly “Angel” I just want to ask whether this finage is normal? The fins seem a bit jaggered and split, but angels temperament has been nothing but normal. Thanks heaps everyone and have a great day ❤️
