  1. Hello - I had 6 otos in a planted 10 gal community tank. They ate all the diatom algae but most of them wouldn't eat any prepared food (Repashy soilent green, green beans, hikari algae wafers, zucchini). Four of them eventually lost their full bellies and died. Some diatom algae is starting to reappear but the remaining otos aren't eating it. I'm not sure if they are struggling because there's only 2 of them left. I have cherry barbs and kuhli loaches in the tank but they don't seem to bother the otos. Should I move the otos to a quarantine tank? Any other ideas?
  2. Hello all - I have a planted 10 gal tank with 11 juvenile cherry barbs (~1 inch in length). They appear to be comfortable at the moment - exploring and nibbling. As they mature and grow to full size, should I expect to have to transfer some (or all) of them to a larger tank?
  3. I've had a similar issue with my glofish danios dying off even though water parameters have been stable throughout. I currently have one glo danio that is reclusive and not eating. I don't expect it to last much longer. Cory in another forum post mentioned that the glofish genetics are generally weaker. @Justin Campbell did you have any luck with your orange glo danio?
  4. Thanks for the feedback @Daniel. My understanding was that bacteria were the primary producers in infusoria cultures but perhaps that's not accurate? I thought the purpose of adding vegetable matter to infusoria was to culture bacteria.
  5. A few of the above posts recommend that an infusoria culture be exposed to sun light. In a green water culture I understand that light is required for algae to carry out photosynthesis. I'm wondering what the purpose of light is in infusoria where algae is not a major component?
  6. Newbie question: can you substitute methylene blue with Ich-X to prevent fungus on eggs?
  7. Hello all, I brought 3 kuhli loaches home two days ago and put them into a 10 gallon quarantine tank. It's a bare bottom tank with a few small pieces of cholla wood. I dropped in half an algae wafer after dark the past 2 evenings but they have gone uneaten. I've been gravel vacuuming the disintegrated wafers the morning after. Should I be concerned that they're not eating? Any advice on how to proceed? Try different food? Do nothing and wait? TIA.
  8. I gather that, with a large enough group of short and longfins, there shouldn’t be much fin nipping but ripped longfins might still be an issue. Would a healthy amount of floating plants be enough to slow them down and prevent ripped fins?
  9. 1) Is it a good idea to keep zebra danios and longfin zebra danios together? I read that zebra danios have a tendency to fin nip longer finned fish. 2) What do you get if you breed a longfin with a regular danio?
  10. The stressed danio likes to hide amongst some dwarf water lettuce in the back left corner. When I noticed the aggression I put in stems of bacopa into the middle of the tank. I wasn't sure that would help but it was all I had on hand. So the solution is to add more females? I was hoping to add other types of fish to the tank so adding more danios means less community fish.
  11. I'm two months into the hobby and I have a 10 gallon planted tank with 7 danios (mix of zebra, gold, glofish). One of my gold danios is harassing all the others and some are showing signs of stress (hiding in the corner, lack of appetite). I've isolated the aggressive danio and added some more plants and decor to the tank but one fish is still hiding, not eating. Is there a way to get this fish out of his funk? Also, I'm wondering if the male:female ratio is setting off the aggressive danio? I did't pay attention when I first got them but I wound up with 2 females and 6 males. One female since died so the ratio is now 1 female:6 males. Water parameters: nitrates 40ppm, nitrite 0ppm, ammonia 0, GH ~300ppm, KH ~40ppm. pH 7.2
