Jimmy
For anyone following I was able to get 2 racks on my wall that is slightly more than 7 feet. Rather than doing a center support on a 7 foot rack I felt more confident in having a rack that was 4 tens wide and a second that is 3 tens wide. My dado cuts aren’t crazy tight but not enough in my mind to be an issue. The one or two that were a concern I was able to shim in a sliver with a hammer that came from the cut itself. I predrilled holes and I’m sinking in some real Good fasteners. I may use wood glue. I intend on staining them rather than painting black. I forgot to take pictures but there will be more. Here’s my helper

lefty o
those cuts arent too bad. just remember, the worst of them go towards the back, the better ones go to the front.

My math was bad. It leaves like 4 inches between the ceiling and the rim of the top aquarium. I can live with 8. Thankfully 2x4 is down to 4.69 here
Jimmy
Ohhh ya. Painted went for speed this isn’t the Sistine Chapel. Coverage was good, my mudding skills has tons of room for improvement lol 2
lefty o
i myself am a bit of a perfectionist, but being that is a garage/shop fish room, and most of it will be hidden behind racks of tanks, id not worry about it at all. sometimes good enough, is really good enough.

I return to work Monday. I’ve probably spent 40 hours working on this or more. I generally work 55-60 a week so time is of the essence LOL. I’ve learned a TON and it’s been quite the experience. I loved doing the electrical and that’s where I made sure I was dead accurate.

lefty o
bonus with the scrapped tank rack lumber, you could reuse it and make some shelves with it where you can pile all the fish keeping stuff up off the floor.

I tried seeing if I could live with it but I can’t. I need to make 4 racks only 2 with dado cuts. This will give me an opportunity to get tighter dados

Jimmy
Made huge progress today. Got all 4 racks done. Haven’t decided if I’m going to paint or stain. Honestly I don’t care about that. I also decided to not paint the aquariums. Room is a dark gray so that’s a sufficient background. I’m resting all the aquariums in white foam board and that’s also pleasing to me as a bottom. Most the aquariums will be bare bottom initially, minus the corydoras tanks. garage is slightly bumpy and unlevel. Using door shims for leveling and I intend on fastening the racks to the wall with at least 2 points of contact. I trust my work but I will activately include my 3 children in the room so I want to eliminate any chance of an accident. My rails aren’t super level so I hope the foam boards will allow even contact on the corners, if not I will go from there. Likely sanding would be next step. stay tuned! 2
