Glad to see this is still going! Having a whole big shoal of them that are all yours is going to be so satisfying.

You’re absolutely right I’m so excited! I plan to continue posting updates and being able to show them all together as adults in a nice aquarium eventually!

Happy 4th everybody!!! The cpd fry are doing well I’ve been feeding bbs a couple times a week when I have the time! I have been in the process of setting up a 29g aquarium to put them in because my other tanks are too small for 30 fish! I had a bunch of dragon stone and wanted to make something to where my hardscape wouldn’t get completely lost in plants like my other aquariums! Also the 29g is quite a tall tank. Let me know what you guys think I had 44 pieces of dragon stone and used 42 of the pieces. 14D3BB92-BAB0-488C-A35F-19F921A0A2A5.jpeg.7d7615c47f72e96596bf8860dab576f8.jpeg3C9E515E-68B6-49E0-8DE5-D39E3C089C27.jpeg.05fa6458e3765ff9dafb883d9b4fce48.jpeg50BB0F94-5CA1-45FB-993E-CED7791ECE80.jpeg.b7069c355ae0f25cda2a0ecd7f20b38a.jpeg7263BD22-FBBB-471D-9064-02652F9A3EF1.jpeg.d5118a4105b9d3902aa2449b4b070f7e.jpeg1FABB001-1552-45EC-8303-D768D3911A92.jpeg.cc16df2428998921244116160cfa71da.jpeg06671FB8-A6E9-4F2D-B2AF-853F33A76B5E.jpeg.744856ac0ed7d13f47b7d6cf1574ad32.jpeg98E8A2F5-9746-4F77-B663-4786537FE56A.jpeg.4499527521ba394a9598bf1cc022ba67.jpegI have flooded it since and am doing a dark start. I put in some old filter media to get the cycle going and I’ll probably get plants in the next couple weeks.

Hey everyone just giving a quick update! I’m moving the fry to a 5g now from the 2.5g to grow out a bit more. I will post another update of them tomorrow once they are settled in to rhe 5g I should be able to get much better pictures of them hopefully so it’s not the same boring updates! I just ordered my co2 kit for the 29g so once that arrives I will be able to get plants and get that set up. I thought I had about 30 cpd fry but when I caught them to put them in the 5g I took a picture and I actually have 45 cpd fry! I’ll post some pics of them in the 5g tomorrow!9D3D9399-6FC7-453A-8CD9-C1B9AFA0F79E.jpeg.349bb5e044cf933ee8fd42ea6f168d35.jpeg

Alright I got everyone settled in to the 5g. I apologize for the background it’s a cheapy and I got water behind it catching the adult cpd out to move them yesterday 😅 and don’t be alarmed if you see a male Betta hanging out as well his name is Finley and he is harmless! The tank is also home to a bunch of cherry shrimp! It was actually my very first planted tank but I’ve changed it up since the beginning hope you guys like the new update!0D26B6D7-90E0-4941-BA43-5B2D76A3E902.jpeg.029434c05cf52ed8a7b734ccce7c04c0.jpegECC2508E-3346-4C19-AECC-7C477E47FD62.jpeg.19918e77a5f44829bc4088244f5b5f65.jpegAFFEA976-B2F7-4A18-88D3-CB00E8486389.jpeg.82d74aeb7944b3ec9a4564cb66654f01.jpegACD235C2-348D-4B88-B6AA-CC5C5C010109.jpeg.a8607e01cecbad729d37fa7aa3179b64.jpegDA2AF2FB-39DE-492C-B55C-94BE3BD3D559.jpeg.55e406f3df366e906ec921325efe090c.jpeg

Today the 4 oldest cpd fry I have are 2 months old now and they are getting the spots on their sides showing up more. The others are not too far behind them. Out of the 45 fry I have noticed one derpy one who swims a little funny and sometimes I notice him resting on the leaf of a crypt in the tank. Not sure how long he’s gonna make it. He lays there for a few and then carries on about his way I’m sure it takes a lot more effort for him to swim then the others! A9A5F04B-E9DA-42DC-895C-F6F556A21E4B.jpeg.f5ba252d3af79c08633cf28ecf460fd1.jpegC15FBF8E-184F-4276-A37A-206513156D4A.jpeg.e5b0462a72e3b776c8e1974d4bcf4d4c.jpeg6D86D5E5-41B4-4B9B-B267-B8F341B9FA8E.jpeg.6313ad15d714e9d37aa139cf97a3a1eb.jpeg5C64B698-B2B0-448C-B5CB-E8B1350959D9.jpeg.9004f4074c75077ec1b4e338892c04c0.jpeg6D585FE5-AEF1-4BBF-A6B7-BBEED03440A8.jpeg.c64044e57d689ed929d8a039477a0400.jpeg

Nice healthy looking group. I hope Derpy made it ok ...

I have to get my BBS system back up and running. My CPDs are maturing but still seem too small to breed. They are coloring up nice though.

The new tank layout looks quite impressive with the stones. Post some updates when you get it all finished.

Thanks Griznatch! Derpy is hanging in there! It is really impressive how well live bbs works to get fish to breed! Just keep feeding them meaty foods and keep their water clean and I’m sure they’ll start showing spawning behavior. I looked back and I’ve had my original cpds for 5 months and I noticed the activity starting to happen about 3 months after having them. I just got all the co2 equipment for the big tank gonna get plants in a few weeks probably and then I’ll post pictures of it! I’m so excited my patience is wearing thin!

No big update this time the cpd fry are still living life in the 5g I still haven’t bought plants for the new tank yet. Trying to be patient and wait for most of the plants I want to be in stock! The 4 adult cpd I originally had and bred to get all these fry used to live in the 5g that all the fry are in now, but I moved them to my 15g fluval flex to make room for all the fry in the 5g. The adults have grown quite a bit more now being in the larger aquarium so I’m excited to get all these fry in the 29g I feel like they will start growing a bit faster having the extra space. It sure is a struggle to get clear pictures of these little guys! 9F7006A3-4E82-4949-9158-2B9581EA53E8.jpeg.cea0ca108ca284013afa2d91ed467d71.jpegC86C659F-8ABF-4ED4-80E1-2A4366A479B6.jpeg.26f013c4faece5e6d3140ac89b73a8f1.jpegE732230B-80A5-4DF9-8CB7-2C7034D48174.jpeg.8af53a9992f06d026279e28720613e2f.jpegCED0511B-8CB9-4812-8243-7EEB496D3790.jpeg.ded071705c65ce107809b06eb34d7c4b.jpegBC563821-C1C3-48C8-A0AC-5B193675109E.jpeg.73d698c9041b25c55570db422fdda5d8.jpeg

Those are some healthy looking Cpd babies. Congratulations Your little derpy guy… I do not want to sound negative only helpful with info. Whenever I had derpys when they reach sexual maturity and squabbled for dominance/breeding the derpys actually got targeted and killed rather quickly including one derpy female. I’m totally guessing but maybe genetically or internally something might have been wrong with them. It was observational only I have no real info on it but wanted to share that with you. Nice shrimp!

Thank you Guppysnail they are doing really well! Unfortunately I don’t believe derpy made it. Unless he magically healed and swims like the rest of them, but I don’t believe that to be the case. Thanks for sharing your info I could see the possibility of them being targeted when mature and trying to breed

Super cool thread Nick! I just bought a little group of 5 on the weekend to try to breed. I’ve got one definite male, one or two hopeful females, and two that could go either way. I’ll be pretty happy as long as I don’t get 4 or 5 males. I’m already seeing what looks like spawning behaviour, which is hilarious, but I don’t think it’s legitimate because surely they can’t be of sexual maturity if the store employee couldn’t easily sex them, right? Anyways, I’m feeding them up for the next couple weeks at least before trying to see if I can get eggs. They came in really nice and plump, so less work for me at least. I haven’t been able to find many resources on raising the fry (which seems like the hard part) so your thread is really helpful! I definitely want to try keeping them with shrimp to help with cleaning, after reading your method. Your scapes are wonderful by the way.

Bit sad about Derpy, but if he was in pain or struggling then I guess it was probably for the best.

Do you reckon I could do the whole process without live bbs? I’m really trying to avoid setting up a hatchery because it’s such a hassle, and the eggs get pretty expensive.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing more updates!

Thank you Crabby and congrats on your CPD’s! They are pretty easy to sex when they are mature. The females are a bit less colorful and down by their anal fin they have a black dot that the males don’t have. That’s how I sexed mine.

I’m sure you could do the process without live bbs by just using frozen. My adults spawn every time after I feed them frozen or live foods! I don’t have a Hatcher since I only have a few tanks. I get a clear glass bowl fill it with 4 cups of water around 78 degrees I just guess. And then I add 1 tablespoon of salt mix it until it dissolves and then I just sprinkle some brine shrimp eggs on the surface not too much though a little goes a long way, and then I let it sit for about 36 hours and then I have plenty of bbs to feed my aquariums. I use my phone light on the side of the glass bowl to attract them and then use a pipette to suck them up and I strain them into a fine net and then feed the fish it’s super easy! Doing it this way my can of co op brine shrimp eggs will probably go bad before I can use them all. It doesn’t get any easier I don’t even use an air stone!

Slick Nick, your fry are adorable and I appreciate all info and the follow up photos you posted. Your tanks look great--that stone placement is very dramatic and your CPDs will look fantastic.

PineSong thank you! I really enjoy sharing my experiences hoping to help others and learn stuff myself along the way! I’m so excited to get my new tank planted and ready for the CPDs!

I’ve been feeding them frozen daphnia for the last couple days, I’ll start mixing it up tomorrow with the other million frozen and dry foods that I use, but they seem to love it.

Upon further review (as they’ve coloured up and become less shy when I stick my big nose up to their tank) I think I have 3 females and 2 males!!! I couldn’t be happier about that ratio. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m pretty darn certain. So I’m very excited to see if I can follow along your footsteps and get a successful spawn!

That is a great ratio to have. If you have any questions just ask, and good luck you’ll have to let me know how it goes!

Awesome thanks Mr Gumby I moved them to the smaller tank this morning and the adults back to the main tank. There were 7 fry total that I saw I managed to get 6 of them by siphoning them into a bucket the tank is pretty heavily planted so those were the only ones I could see and get. Between the 6 I have and if anymore pop up in the small tank now that I moved the adults out I will be satisfied! I had 4 adults and wanted more 10 or 12 would be cool! Fingers crossed they survive! Here’s a pic of the main tank it’s just a fluval spec v but the only babies I saw were in the open area. The cpds like to spawn over by the crypt on the right.

Holy moly! You're tank looks IN-CREDIBLE!!! I'm usually not a fan of a blue background....but you absolutely KILLED it with this set up.

Sorry for going off on a side bar... but I'm in love with your scape.

Hahaha no worries Jeff I really appreciate it!! Honestly the reason I ended up with a blue background is because they didn’t have black when I got it. Really glad you like the scape I had it scaped way differently before it was my first scape and it looks so much better now that I changed it up I’ll share a pic of it before.85F9F339-96CC-45D4-A543-9E23EAEE4FCB.jpeg.6e1d8f1751a35ee9039d11589c25786b.jpeg

Hey Nick, how did you know when your CPDs started spawning? How could you tell? Were there fry, or eggs you could see, or was it just behavioural?

In the morning I feed them and give them some time to eat, and I will come back by the tank and stay a little ways away and I would typically see the male trying to chase a female into a secluded area of the tank specifically on the right in the 5g by the big crypt and I would see them go back there and wiggle around together. I never saw the eggs I imagine they are tiny! I never saw fry until I pulled them out of the 5g to try and breed them that’s when a few fry popped up in the 5g after I removed the adults so they will eat their fry. So when I put them in the small tank to breed I just put a thick mat of Christmas moss across the floor and fed them good and left them for a week. I didn’t pay attention to if they were actually breeding or not in there and then after the week I caught the few fry out of the 5g and put the adults back in there and put the few fry in the tank I just let the adults breed in for a week. Then over the next week more and more fry started popping up in the little tank next thing I knew I had over 40 fry! At first I thought they were dead because they just stick to the side glass, but I soon found out they just do that when they are first born. Sorry for the long message haha

No need to apologise, that’s awesome, exactly what I was looking for. Ooh do you reckon there’s any harm in putting a tub with chrissy moss in to see if they do anything? Maybe they’re wanting to spawn but I’m busy thinking they’re too young or not ready to?

I have seen that done as well. Do you have any other fish in with the CPD’s? Also do you have another small aquarium or breeder box?
